I love this Gregorian canto fermo (so far I've only known the Duruflé rendition) and I love Lauridsen - and this a superb combinaiton of both! And a masterly interpretation, too - bardzo piekne!!!!
is it just me or does it get flat towards the end? listen to beginning portion and fast forward to the end. i know choirs get off all the time, esp harder if sung acapella. not being a stickler, i think this is a beautifully done. i was just wondering if i missed something in the music, b.c i don't remember
@immelio Lol...Yes! Lauridsen is actually a musical outlaw...Constantly on the run...getting outta sticky situations with his music as a distraction! :D
I've been a fan of Lauridsen's music for a few years now but never heard this! Like his other wonderful music, the harmonies are rich, lush and the melodies sublime! Awesome stuff!
Very delicate and beautiful, thanks. However, the plain chant opening needed more applied knowledge of the Latin language and its accents, e.g. congreGAmur, iucunDEmur, etc.... Therefore, this choir suffered from linguistic problems in the execution of the Latin language and therefore, because Lauridsen understands the language well and so built into the music the beauty of the Latin metre, this choir failed to deliver the requiste phrasing. In addition to which, their pitch suffers at times.
@christianvs1 That's the conductors fault. He led the choir to to the wrong EmPHASis on the wrong SyllAble. Sometimes it's notated wrong but Lauridsen doesn't do that.
While I don't agree with the conductor's interpretation or style, the ensemble sounds nice for the first half of the piece. Intonation starts to be an issue around the "Timeamus..." but in general they have a really great tone. Intonation starts to slip in the "Amen" section again but the tone is absolutely focused to the highest degree.
I hate this style of conducting--it (and consequently the choral sound/phrasing) is so artificial and force. Less is more; except intonation, which went very sour toward the end there.
@musicamaxima Well the key is to think opposite. If its a "ff" then think "pp" (technique wise not volume) otherwise it'll be forced. But the diction and text kinda lingered off in the distance somewhere. :/
The combination of plainsong and Morten Lauridsen's amazing harmonic landscapes is amazing. I've long been a fan of Durufle's version. This version is new and exciting. The director seems to get just what he wants in tone, dynamics, and changes in tempo. I'm quickly becoming more and more enamored of Lauridsen's choral music.
Overall superb. Added dynamics depart from the original score. Done for competition, surely. Very nice job except for the soprano sharps now and then. Needed some more 2nd Tenor for balance. Hope they did well.
I'm pretty happy about this song. I heard it on the local classical station, and looked it up; lo and behold, it's just as good here as it was on the radio.
Beautifully sensitive conducting.

Wonderful interpretation of a spectacularly beautiful choral arrangement. You must be commended on keeping pitch and intonation on a piece this hard.

I looove this setting and this is a stunning performance of it.
Does anyone know where I could find a recording of this?

@lvsong The best recording in my opinion is the Polyphony recording with Stephen Layton conducting.

... però Lauridsen è sempre troppo uguale a se stesso!
Bella l'esecuzione, howewer :-)

This isn't even similar to Tavener! However, I don't think this is really one of Lauridsen's best compositions.

5 stars for the Performance
3 for the composition. Tavener without wisdom.
