Do you add other stuff in with the balsam or just cook it down?

@BLviolin just a quick question, what do u use for the base coat and is it the same for a violin? i hear people use a coat of shellac, i heard some1 used half methylated spirits and half the actual varnish they used? thanks!

I didn't know it took that much work! I thought it just came in a jar or something and you painted it on!
