I actually love her :) The way she can put what happened to her into a cheery sounding song and a jokey music video shows how strong she is as a person :)
I have a problem with saying that a girl who got drunk and had sex was raped. I feel like women who've actually been raped don't need these people diminishing what they've been through. Like calling alcoholism a disease.
@FuckItSnoopy That's like saying you don't like people telling you they're in love unless they're married to Prince Charming with seven kids. Maybe what happened to the character sketch in this vid wasn't as bad as what happens to kid prostitutes in 3rd world countries, but it's still rape.
@eschercheshire If you don't mind me jumping in here, I'd just like to point out that there's a difference between choosing to get drunk and having some asshole slip something into your drink. And as to the in-love thing, how the hell does that compare? I really don't get that connection.
@FuckItSnoopy If you can't consent to sex, then it is RAPE. It isn't diminishing others experiences at all. How would you like it if you got drunk at a party, and passed out, only to find some creep on top of you having sex with you? Or who took advantage of you while you were awake? No, it isn't violent rape that people think of, but most rapes aren't like that, they are date rapes or cases where the person can't consent to what happened. Either way, it still causes emotional damage
I'm not talking about passing out and actually getting raped. I'm talking about the seemingly growing number of women who seem to think that getting drunk and having sex with a guy who's also drunk is rape. It's like saying that regretting having sex with a guy is the same as him raping you.
@FuckItSnoopy If someone can't consent to having sex with another person then it is rape. Therefore if you didn't want to be having sex with that person, but you were drunk and they took advantage of that fact, then it is rape. If you and a guy you like got drunk at a party together and slept together it is obviously different. Technically neither of you could give consent, but if you didn't want to have sex and the guy took advantage of you being drunk to get you to have sex it is.
@FuckItSnoopy To be fair, it was never implied she willingly had sex with the man in the video due to her intoxication. You just have a much harder time (physically) fighting off a rapist when you're drunk.
It's not that she gives 0 fucks about the issue. She was molested, she was date raped, experienced a lot of this in the flesh. The fact that she's able to put all of this pain into snarky words & upbeat rhythm with a silly video speaks volumes of her strength. It screams she's not a victim, she won't be slut-shamed, she refuses to feel "ashamed" about what happened to her as many, many people sadly insist rape survivors should, as if it were "their fault." Keep Amaze & Carry Balls, AFP!
@BlueB13 My interpretation was that she was going through all of this terrible stuff but remained really upbeat because some celebrities gave her a small amount of attention, and the song was about how much society obsesses over famous people to an unhealthy point.
@KnowTheAxiom oh, very possibly :D I'm pretty sure AP's lyrics never have one single, simple meaning behind them. I was just "answering" the claims that Amanda Palmer didn't care at all about the issue and was treating it lightly like it didn't matter.
@KnowTheAxiom I had always imagined that it was trying to say that no matter how shit life can be to you, there is something to hang on to, i.e. getting a letter from a favourite band or going to a gig with a mate (ex-mate?) I hadn't thought of your interpretation before but it's actually pretty interesting. Good call.

I love Amanda Palmer, I do. And it's not that I'm offended by this song or that I "don't get the irony," I just think it's obnoxious, and dare I say it, trying too hard. Definitely the low point of this album for me.
THIS is an artist who truly gives zero fucks. Once I see Ke$ha sing a song this offensive, this proudly, un-auto-tuned, I may consider spending $1.29 on her glittery ass.
Every time I watch an Amanda Palmer video, EVERY TIME...I always end up wondering how she does her hair, and how I can do it just like hers. Oh yeah, and I love every second of the music. That too.
Which is brilliant because in an average teenager's mind things like rape and abortion are only important because their worried about how their friends will react.
it should never be mandated that all songs dealing with rape or 9/11 or something like that must be sullen, sad folk ballads. that's not art, that's political correctness plain and simple. it should not be factored too heavily into an artist's decision making that SOME people might be hurt or offended by something, because you cannot please every single person that will hear your song or view your film.
god i cant stop listening/watching this song :) Its quite true lik i went throuh a sorta similar situation there's so many teen girls who've been molested taken advantage on but stay quite about it and try to forget I know I do.. and I really get the think about oasis but for me its a different band but id be really upset then if i was asked am i ok id be lik ya i just found this photo of my favorite band or id watch a video... itd make everything ok for that moment
Question, anybody notice or recognize the mail man? To me he kind of looks like the man who played Freddie in the older nightmare on elm street movies but I could be wrong, would be totally hilarious though if it were. :)
I love zis woman! :P I love her armpits! I think they actually make her really attractive. I mean, come on, men have hairy armpits and people don't accuse them of being "gross" and "trying to make a statement". If anything, it's all natural. Shaving's overrated XD She's just awesome in all she does from her music to her eyebrows. Her absolute craziness and weirdness enchants me. Love her!!
@CrazyDiamond003 I agree 100% with EVERYTHING you said! Enoigh of that "Men must do that", "Women must do this", whatever, you just do what you want with your life, your visual! And Amanda is definitely avant-garde on anything she does!
Favorite things about this video: the way the mailman grabs the letter with his teeth, the hot pink clothes hanger, the face AP makes before she says crack whore, and 'Melissa's' random stone faced appearance at the end. So many lol's in one video...
@KindOfLikeDying Even if it isn't needed anymore, that doesn't make it 'necessary' to remove it otherwise evolution would have taken care of that... think wisdom teeth. And why would women not shaving their underarms make them as unhygienic as not washing their hair yet men are allowed to roam around with all the armpit/leg hair they want? And she is not 'destroying' the point because the point is she can choose to do whatever she likes, and that's exactly what she's doing.
@andyclaire men have more armpit hair then women too! And ppl STILL say a PROPER YOUNG LADY needs to shave her armpit hair... -_- hogwash and stupidity
@KindOfLikeDying I think the decision to shave her eyebrows actually emphasizes the idea that the choice to shave one part of the body and not the other is totally random, and should therefore be a matter of personal choice... She's pretty outspoken about body-hair pride, but I've heard her say that above all, it's about "doing your own thing," even if your thing happens to be shaving :)
I was feeling so anxious but I've been trying to get through Who Killed Amanda Palmer through youtube (don't it....YET!). So I was feeling pretty horrible but this made me laugh so much and lighten up my mood. Thank you so much Amanda! :D
Here's the dealio guys. There's a big difference between 'Christians' and 'Fundamentalist Christians' so let's not get our panties in a bunch. Also, welcome to the 21st century where most people have realized that women having to shave anything is just a social construct and that nobody dies when a woman decides she doesn't want to shave, and that in reality shaving is unnatural because GUESS WHAT, hair growth is what's natural. The end.
@andyclaire hell YES! women only began shaving because the Wilkinson razor co. was going bankrupt and they needed a new marketing scheme, anyhow. they basically invented an insecurity to capitalize on. shaming women (and men alike) for not shaving is nothing more than allowing rich strangers to tell us how we're supposed to look so they can make bank on it.
@risingrisingrising actually there's an enormous number of prochoice Christians, for whom i am exceptionally grateful. and there's just as many antichoice Christians who are perfectly content saying that God hates me for having an abortion. i know this because they've been kind enough to tell me.
@lygophilia1 Yeah I was really skeptical of this video the first time I saw it, but now that it's my 30th time today watching it within the past 2 hours it's starting to wear me down.
a) is that Ben Folds as the boyfriend!? b) if she makes great music, I don't care what she shaves or doesn't shave. Nena (of "99 Luftaballons" fame) didn't shave her pits, either.
@ShredPenguins you know what, no they don't need to be shaved, she can have as much body as she wants, just because society tells us it's wrong doesn't mean it is. I for one don't like it, but what makes Amanda Palmer so amazing is (if you don't count music, personality etc) that she doesn't fucking care, she doesn't shave her armpits and that's brilliant of her.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@GottaLoveTheFez That doesn't make her amazing, that makes her a contrarian.
Not shaving to fight a social norm is fairly retarded. You aren't actually fighting the norm, you're fighting the fact that you've never been able to click into that normalcy. Most people don't give a fuck, ignore it, and then simply move on. They don't "fight the system" through their 30's and 40's. Some people do obviously but those same people think 9/11 is a hoax, that we didn't land on the moon, and etc.
@ShredPenguins I know this might come as a shock but, she probably doesn't shave her armpits, legs or vagina because she doesn't want to. Sometimes people do shit, not to make a political statement, weird.
@PumpkinRouge Maybe to protest we should all make comments asking why whatever male musician doesn't shave his legs, chest, pits or whatever and vote them up.
The song shows that whle we all look at a young girl getting an abortion as either being right or wrong...the point is that it's about a girl who has other childlike priorities in the life like bands, songs, movies, friends who is forced to make a decision, but at the end of the day was not mature enough to make that decision because she, like other young kids can't understand what it is, and maybe she was not ready. On another note...stop having kids at twelve and juding people.
I have read this all. The posts and some are good. The issue is not about anything more than the aspect of being a young girl and dealing with mature subjects...and kids having kids, when the only thing they care about in the long run is the aspect of being a kid. I mean the entire song smacks the face of all people against the womans right to choose but also smacks the face of girls who don't even considder life. So it double smacks! For people with Fundy mentalities
The girl I fell in love with looks kinda like Amanda, especially her clothing style and outright craziness. Two months after we got together I asked her if she knew about Amanda Palmer, apparently she didn't but she loved "episches Theater" (the style both their looks are inspired upon). Now we're getting married in October and this will be our opening dance.
BTW: Most members of my family are devout christians.
I just saw her play for free at Occupy ChCh !

Maybe she simply doesn't care to shave her pits for the sake of not wanting to shave her arm pits.

UnamericanWerewolf 8 months ago
@ShredPenguins you know what, no they don't need to be shaved, she can have as much body as she wants, just because society tells us it's wrong doesn't mean it is. I for one don't like it, but what makes Amanda Palmer so amazing is (if you don't count music, personality etc) that she doesn't fucking care, she doesn't shave her armpits and that's brilliant of her.

ShredPenguins 8 months ago
@ShredPenguins I know this might come as a shock but, she probably doesn't shave her armpits, legs or vagina because she doesn't want to. Sometimes people do shit, not to make a political statement, weird.
PumpkinRouge 8 months ago 52
@PumpkinRouge Maybe to protest we should all make comments asking why whatever male musician doesn't shave his legs, chest, pits or whatever and vote them up.

This song/video isn't about abortions and teen pregnancy at all. It's about how shit Oasis are, and why they have the worst fanbase in the world.

Arkanix 8 months ago 15
I have read this all. The posts and some are good. The issue is not about anything more than the aspect of being a young girl and dealing with mature subjects...and kids having kids, when the only thing they care about in the long run is the aspect of being a kid. I mean the entire song smacks the face of all people against the womans right to choose but also smacks the face of girls who don't even considder life. So it double smacks! For people with Fundy mentalities
Arkanix 8 months ago 6
The girl I fell in love with looks kinda like Amanda, especially her clothing style and outright craziness. Two months after we got together I asked her if she knew about Amanda Palmer, apparently she didn't but she loved "episches Theater" (the style both their looks are inspired upon). Now we're getting married in October and this will be our opening dance.
BTW: Most members of my family are devout christians.
