I gotta ask, how is it that firebenders have control over lightning? It doesnt seem like lightning is a form of fire... electricity is electricity and fire is fire. Anyone know?
@boolengleng It probably has to do with Agni being an influence for fire-bending culture. Agni is the name of an Hindu deity who has 3 forms: sun, fire, & lightning. The inclusion of lightning as an aspect of fire-bending was probably just another nod to this. Feng Shui & Wicca also consider lightning an aspect of fire. Plus lightning is super-heated air particles, thus heat energy, which can be controlled by fire benders.

I just don't know what paramount execs were smoking when they thought it was a good idea. and kisu is awesome and that, but with big names like paramount and a 150 million dollar budget, they could've easily gotten Yuan Woo Ping on this project, and he wasn't even busy that year

@SeymoreSparda That is correct. Karate is based heavily on Shaolin Gung-Fu, both Norther and Southern (Hung Ga is a Southern Shaolin style). The two characters of 'Kara' and 'Te', actually meant 'Chinese Hand', until the meaning changed in the late 1800's. Gung-Fu masters went to Okinawa and Karate was heavily influenced by the Shaolin styles and adopted into their own martial art. That's why a lot of the stances and basics are the same.

@brothak2009 he also did it that way because he said that all the other benders were restricted to what they could do. which isn't really true. airbenders have air all around them, master waterbenders like katara and hama and even pakku all can bend water out of thin air or in anothers body if need be, firebenders create their own fire which is a limitation in itself because that dictates just how powerfull said firebender is. And earthbenders have nothin but earth around them 24/7.

Firebending from avatar actually got me into northern shaolin kung fu, I've been taking it for a year now. I'm a green sash. I'm gonna learn Ba Qu next(air)
Though I myself prefer Firebending and the Northern Styles of Kung Fu, every type of bending was purposefully designed to be equal, none of them are truly superior to another.
well if you think about it, earth beats fire.......big huge wall of rock can squish those fire nation basterds+ if you think that fire benders will burn the earth benders with lava then, thats the only streaghnth fire has over earth, even though earth can still block lava for enough time to escape
earth benders can only do anything on land. So they suck anywhere else. Fire benders are the best..easy. fire nation bet the earth kingdom...even before the comet...
Though if you want to go into more details, Earth and Air are opposites; the same for water and fire. Their styles oppose each other in that water is gentle and free-flowing while fire is wild, forceful and hard to control. Air is adaptable and hard to hold hence the Airbenders style of evade and avoid while Earthbenders take things head on like rocks.
There really is no superior element. It's all about what style affects you most.
@felrece one thing to point out is air fuels fire, so air really has two weeknesses - earth and fire. However it can also be said that air could be used to minipulate lightning and sound since lighting is created by friction in the air (caused by moving air particles) and sound is caused air particles vibrating in a certan way
@felrece lol. no worries. youtube should let people know when they have the top rated comment. I gess it was people should use there imagenation more in avitar; like Toph did with metal bending. It would make charicters more indivisualised and the program more interesting
oh and even though i am a preferred airbender, i take northern shaolin eagle claw in my spare time, so i understand what he is saying about it being strong and aggressive, but also at the same time it's not. its actually kinda cool to learn this type of kung fu, knowing that a lot of other martial arts descended from it. even though i just barely started my training, i know enough to name the moves they do in the show. and i know a bit of tai chi too. :D
also if they're fighting in snow, they can do the same thing.
i think earth VS water is equal because if an earth bender throws a rock and a water bender throws the water at the rock, then it turns to mud, both earth and water benders can easily extract thier element from mud.
all the styles they use are awesome but I take great pride in practicing Northern Shaolin and Tai Chi, know all of two movements of Baqua but its so little I rarely count it.

Earth>Air (obvious)
