it was indeed a grivious day when the prophets grandsons where slayn however it was NEVER comanded by Allah or the prophet or even by Ali himself that people should MUTILATE tehm selves and thier CHILDREN with KNIFES.this is akin to the christian retual of self punishment it is no different. people die and yes although it is sadnning and upsetting we should not hurt our bodies and the bodeis of our children.

such actions are NOWHERE to be found in the quran or the authentic hadiths.
