@roobberyy He is/was human, right :) But I've remembered a history:
His sister Viviane has told his first race (when he was a kid) under rain at karting was horrible, he ran off of the track and finished last. He was so sad and every day when the rain falled on the track, he goes to the track to practice. It was his motto: Practiced and trying to be better and better.
0:46 I don't know about the others drivers in the entire history of the F1, but beyond Senna, the only driver who used this tecnique was the greatest Jim Clark! It's incredible... incredible. :)
@VitorPVTB feathering the throttle? it helps to you push the car closer to the limit by peeking at the max grip available to the driven tires, among other things. I think it's more common in lower grip racing. The nsx having street tires, and little down force, is closer to jim clark's period of f1 cars than ayrtons period of f1's, in terms of grip.
"You want to come with me? " Either from a man or a woman, the answer would had been yes, but with a totally different idea in the mind of the man than that on the woman, LOL...
@hennessey861 Not me brother. I just saw the documentary movie about him last night. He's my new hero. His death had such a profound effect on Formula One. @stekhouse Do you know what the benefits are of tapping the gas pedal like Senna did? I am not a racing driver and can not think for the life of me why anyone would do that.
@MrSkobbler a while ago i saw a video where martin brundle explained that drivers like M. Schumacher drove like everyone else in a corner, when he enters the corner he lets the car go to the apex and then after the apex he push the gas without any tapping, normal drivers don't find that easy and the lose time, senna was able to maintain with his tapping the car on the apex with more speed then anyone in the circus. during monaco 88 he was ahead of the whole group by 1.5 seconds
@stekhouse It's interesting to know that even M. Schumacher didn't or wasn't able to use this technique. Ayrton Senna truly was an astonishing driver! If you haven't seen the 2010 Senna DVD I highly recommend it. Thanks for the reply!
@MrSkobbler Find better traction, take and exit the corner quicker than anyone else , albeit tenths of a second but over a lap and race distance this technique would create significant advantage . Senna was the King !
@thehitchrules I just showed his commitment to get the most out of a lap. Truly the King! And to all those that are starting to compare Seb Vettel with Ayrton Senna... wake up! It's not even the same type of racing anymore....
Not a pro-driver so I need some help here: in a Top Gear video where Jackie Stewart teaches James May how to drive, he specifically states to Capt. Slow:"(when existing a corner) never step on the gas until you don't have to lift again". In this video Senna seems to employ a very different technique since he often feather the throttle from the middle of the corner and floor it later on. Anyone can shed some light on the differences, pros and cons? Thanks.
@mikechen121 Senna always step on the gas pedal but he didn't apply full throttle on middle of corner. No one can do because that's exceed tire traction avalible from "traction circle". There is only one fact to exit corner "squeeze on throttle as early as possible and go on to full throttle as long as it's not exceed tire traction limit".
@mikechen121 I don't know what car they were in in that top gear episode (got a link?), however many cars with a mid engine RWD configuration are best handled with mild trail brake in and light maintenance throttle mid corner. I believe this is the case for the NSX. With a front engine RWD configuration it is often better to finish most of your braking before you turn in, and start feeding in throttle as you unwind the wheel post apex. I suspect May and Stewart were in an FR car.
@675Films I tried to past the link over but it failed somehow, this is the video's title on youtube "Top Gear - James May & Jackie Stewart". So, you're saying mid-engine layout allows a vehicle to carry more speed through the corner than FR cars, since they have to break more before entering the corner?
@mikechen121 Not necessarily. I am only saying that the quickest way through a corner is often different in an MR car. Most FR cars are set up so that braking causes the car to resist turning in, therefore it is more effective to brake late, straight, and hard, and turn in a little later than the geometric ideal.
@mikechen121 MR cars tend to be more neutral, and tolerate light braking into the corner. Maintenance throttle doesn't accelerate the car, but maintains the longitudinal balance mid corner. MR cars tend to be very unforgiving of lifting off the throttle once you're committed to a turn. Senna, in this case, is modulating the throttle quickly to gain a finer level of control over power delivery. This results in smaller changes in balance. It's also hard to do, but hey, it's Senna.
@675Films Thanks very much for the insight. It's quite helpful. When you said "maintain longitudinal input", you meant "to keep weight as equal as possible for front wheel and rear wheel(for optimum traction I suppose)", right? If this is the case, I'd revere this guy even more. I mean, this is a test drive, a PR even, not an F1 race, and he's still trying to fine tune the balance through every corner. What dedication!
@Neodymio it's a honda NSX. The car's strong chassis rigidity and cornering/handling capabilities were the results of Ayrton Senna's direct input with NSX's chief engineers while testing the NSX prototype car at Honda's Suzuka Circuit during its final development stages.
Why is that when he ís changing gear down, he still touchs on the accelarator? Even when he keeps on changing down, like 4º to 3º to 2º gear. Is it to keep the rotations high?.
@TheHelder1976 he has aquired that skill from formula 1, doing that will make you a few tengths quicker per lap vey hard to do, i try'd it out in my car, i nearly smashed into a lamp post lol
@TheHelder1976 it's rev matching. You match the engine RPM to where it would be when you engage the lower gear. Keeps the suspension in line (keeps the car from diving forward at the downshift) to improve handling. Most times you see heel/toe (toe on the break and heel hitting the gas).
@TheHelder1976 That's call heel & toe downshift use toe to brake and heel(or side foot) to tap gas pedal. This technique is necessary for racing because you have to use maximum potential of engine by downshift to lower gear that lead engine rev to power band - so you can accelerate harder to exit corner. If you downshift w/o doing heel-toe, you'll face heavy engine brake due to mismatch speed between flywheel(engine) and clutch(transmission) that's cause unpredictable situation.
Não tenho medo em dizer. Depois de Senna, a F1 nunca mais foi a mesma. Um grande esportista e uma grande pessoa. Um homem que marcou não somente o Brasil, mas o mundo todo.
You know it's interesting, Jackie stewart always says never put your foot on the throttle until you know you never have to take it off again, but senna is up and down with it through the duration. There both great drivers but obviously very different ideas.
Legend.the only other driver who's driving skill he respected was alesi ( remember phoenix Gp ),formula 1 has never been the same IMO .great footage thanks
It's not just able the H&T technique. It is about Senna's H&T technique. Notice his H&T are very smooth and always pinpoint accurate without unnecessary movements or jerkiness.. like what most people (you and I) tend to do. I'm still amazed at his superb control and calm driving technique. Sad to lose such a unique and amazing talent such as himself. RIP Senna.
@Jayeeyee Yea I noticed that his heel toe technique involves more than just blipping the throttle and changing down.....he actually adjusts incrementally midway to have better traction on exit......pure skill
I'm not a professional driver, so that's the purpose of my question.
What is the purpose of doing heel and toe? to control the car in the turn¿? because he is pressing the clutch, so i think if the gas is full throttle i don't think there's any purpose to do it...
@Oasisdelrock The need to heel and toe is simple, it allows for a brief moment to rev up the engine in order for the gearbox to get up to speed with the engine, thus reducing the "bump" and sudden change in mass transfer form the rear to the front of the car allowing for an easier transition. And at the same time reduce the overall speed of the vehicle for turning. (breaking) at the same time. Once you have mastered this "move" you will notice that your driving style would become smoother.
Damn I didn't realize he was pegging the Speedometer!!! The people who dislike this video probably have no idea who Senna is and probably was looking for option or hot version videos.
" You wanna come with me ? ", "Hell, yeah ". That would be a dream come true , riding shot-gun with Senna whilst he floors it round a race track. !! Awesome driver, truly gutted he has gone .
@thehitchrules Dream come true somehow doesn't quite explain how epically mind blowing that would have been to experience. Sitting shotgun next to basically the "God of Racing"..to me would be like a religious person getting to walk on water with Jesus..
1st: what did he do at @0:40 and why did he do it?
2nd: Why not brake and only downshift ONCE and rev match ONCE into the gear you want rather than do it for each gear like Senna here and a lot of people I see? If anybody can explain, thanks
2nd: that's the right way to do it... you should always brake with the brakes and gearbox. You should always be in the right gear, so you can correct any understeer, for example.
@Pirosbor 1 - looks like he thought 5th gear is down but he felt it was wrong, so he double clutched it - yup Senna mis-shifted, probably first time to drive this baby. It shows you his feel of the car.
2 - if you skip a gear when downshifting, you will upset the balance of the car cuz it will break traction. Downshifting while braking separates the men from the boys. It should be touch-and-go for each gear, smoothly so you do not stress the synchros or you will need to rebuild your tranny
2. downshift rev-match for each gear is easier than rev-match as skip gear. First it's easy to estimate raising engine rev to match tranny speed. Second you can't rev-matching as skip gear (ie; 5th - 2nd) w/o doing double clutch. Because different speed between dog-clutch and clutch-drum exceed synchro limit so you can't engage to desire gear.
its weird how he's continually rythmically jabbing at the throttle in the middle of the corner. I would think if you needed some throttle in a corner but not all of it you'd press a steady, modulated amount. i don't get the jabbing. (then again I'm no senna)
@CNCTEMATIC Not sure if its the case here but some drivers do this to keep the turbo spinning when the revs dropping would normally cause it to spool down and give less boost on the exit of the bend , great video, shame so many modern cars have huge spacing on the pedals that hinders heel and toe, last car I could do this in was an Alfasud sprint as the brake and throttle pedals were nice and close.
@CNCTEMATIC apparently that's one of the elements of his driving that made him so fast in corners, along with madly late braking! People have commented on how he made an F1 car dance, maybe that's how he did it. So badly missed. Will never forget that day
NSX was one of the first, if not truly the first to have a Traction Control system like.
The system was totally mechanical, a small clutch fixed on the cable that opens the throttle.
If the ABS revs detection system sense a traction problem the clucth loose and the pedal become like 'free play'.So you need to raise a bit the pressure on the accelerator to let the clutch lock again.
"He established his own limits. When he reached those limits he wanted to beat them and establish new ones.I never new how fast he could go,I had an understanding but i didn't know." Alain Prost On Senna

I'm still amazed at his superb control and calm driving technique. Sad to lose such a unique and amazing talent such as himself. RIP Senna.
Jayeeyee 3 months ago
@Jayeeyee Yea I noticed that his heel toe technique involves more than just blipping the throttle and changing down.....he actually adjusts incrementally midway to have better traction on exit......pure skill
powerfultoa7 3 months ago
@powerfultoa7 That was classic Ayrton, blipping the throttle mid corner.
tylerama 3 months ago
I'm not a professional driver, so that's the purpose of my question.
What is the purpose of doing heel and toe? to control the car in the turn¿? because he is pressing the clutch, so i think if the gas is full throttle i don't think there's any purpose to do it...
Oasisdelrock 3 months ago

That throttle pumping in the corners would win him a couple of tenths of a second. Grand Master.

@buzonperiodista Yeh he's searching for the grip after the corners so he can get full throttle as early as possible... Very UNIQUE :) !!

@thehitchrules Dream come true somehow doesn't quite explain how epically mind blowing that would have been to experience. Sitting shotgun next to basically the "God of Racing"..to me would be like a religious person getting to walk on water with Jesus..

What a wonderful driver and person Ayrton was. I was 14 when he died...and I cried. I still miss him

2 genuine questions here:
1st: what did he do at @0:40 and why did he do it?
2nd: Why not brake and only downshift ONCE and rev match ONCE into the gear you want rather than do it for each gear like Senna here and a lot of people I see? If anybody can explain, thanks
Pirosbor 4 months ago
@Pirosbor 1st: Probably checking throttle response and where the clutch engages.
RetroGamerr1991 4 months ago
@Pirosbor
1st: Mis-shift! :)
2nd: that's the right way to do it... you should always brake with the brakes and gearbox. You should always be in the right gear, so you can correct any understeer, for example.

@Pirosbor 2nd: downshifts help slow the car down.
kojak1two 4 months ago in playlist SHAKEDOWN PLAYLIST - 14 SEP 2011
@Pirosbor 1 - looks like he thought 5th gear is down but he felt it was wrong, so he double clutched it - yup Senna mis-shifted, probably first time to drive this baby. It shows you his feel of the car.
2 - if you skip a gear when downshifting, you will upset the balance of the car cuz it will break traction. Downshifting while braking separates the men from the boys. It should be touch-and-go for each gear, smoothly so you do not stress the synchros or you will need to rebuild your tranny
AccordGTR 3 months ago
@AccordGTR Thanks for your reply, very interesting
Pirosbor 3 months ago
@Pirosbor 1. He miss up-shift and re do again.
2. downshift rev-match for each gear is easier than rev-match as skip gear.

That's not only heel-toe, even without downshifting, he's balancing the car with part of right foot on throttle.
He can do two feet's job in one, that's the master of it!

its weird how he's continually rythmically jabbing at the throttle in the middle of the corner. I would think if you needed some throttle in a corner but not all of it you'd press a steady, modulated amount. i don't get the jabbing. (then again I'm no senna)
CNCTEMATIC 4 months ago
@CNCTEMATIC Not sure if its the case here but some drivers do this to keep the turbo spinning when the revs dropping would normally cause it to spool down and give less boost on the exit of the bend , great video, shame so many modern cars have huge spacing on the pedals that hinders heel and toe, last car I could do this in was an Alfasud sprint as the brake and throttle pedals were nice and close.
andicog 4 months ago
@andicog i dont think this car has a turbo
BrianTheeKing 4 months ago
@BrianTheeKing I stand corrected ! : )
andicog 4 months ago
@CNCTEMATIC apparently that's one of the elements of his driving that made him so fast in corners, along with madly late braking! People have commented on how he made an F1 car dance, maybe that's how he did it. So badly missed. Will never forget that day
edwardfreeman2010 4 months ago
@CNCTEMATIC
I assume you never drove a NSX 1st model. :)
This system was changed from 1995-1996. :)
