this is so bad motherfucking ass, especially the drummer at the very first of this vid.holy!!!!!!!!!!! im a good drummer, but i dont know if i could ever pull that shit off.
Boz is the man! And still going strong! He's probably the most under-rated songwriter of the 20th century...yet, he's simply awesome! Most people have no clue of the fantastic rock/pop/love songs he wrote. Jeff Porcaro was just amazing! I love the video where he explains how he took "Fool in the Rain" and the Purdie Shuffle for the backbone of Rosanna. Toto had some success but they were just a great band and hope the younger kids "get it".
Fabulous!!! It is so cool to see a young Boz doing his thing! It's all so natural and yet a ""class-A performance!! The whole scene takes me back.... Ahhh the 70's what a great time to be alive! I've been a Boz fan since then and still adore him! Saw him for the first time last Fall, I took my 24 year old son to see him because he had never heard if Boz Scaggs( shame on me) ! William Royce is still the man after all these years! Check out the song " I got your number" with Boz and the late
I can watch this a million times. Great song, great performance, great musicianship. Boz really changed his artistry from the time he was with Steve Miller Band in the early SanFrancisco days of the Sailor album.
@rickylalane I think I may HAVE watched it a million times, ha! I just love it...the 'raw' quality, the old-time video-ness, and most of all the incredible artistry. It is one of my very faves...I come back to hear it & 'get my fix' regularly! Just...awesome.
I play this song out with my band live; the drum part was very, very tricky, as the ghost notes kind of ran counter to how I am used to playing them, but I finally got them down the was Jeff plays them. He was one of the most unique-sounding drummers out there during his time in my opinion.
This is a great example of how important the rhythm section is to making the music move. Jeff Porcaro's shuffle at the start of this swings like crazy. I wish more bands would put greater expectation on their rhythm section to 'groove' and to 'swing'. I'm a drummer, and I find the rhythm sections in most younger bands to be lame. Whoever came up with the idea that a 'groove' is just a straight boom-chuck over and over got it wrong. A groove needs energy and swing. Like we see here.
This is when music was music. Real, alive, they played for the audience and loved it. Brings back some great memories, like a time machine. Those were some good days the 70s.
A few things - first I thank my Dad for exposing me to this kind of music when I was a kid because now I have no problems playing it for my kids. They need to know what REAL music is all about. Secondly, that keyboard player with the mustache looks so much like the late great Brad Delp from Boston :] And third, going to see the Boz man in Tarryton NY next month - can't wait. Real music = Boz Skaggs. Doesn't get much better than this. Keep it alive and see him on tour! :)
Not sure why the post-er is assuming Mike Porcaro is playing bass here, especially when it's acknowledged that he can't be seen. David Hungate played bass on Boz's biggest and earliest albums.
@RMNCOfficial You know, this song is how I first came to know of Jeff's work. I have ALWAYS loved the song, and considering the musicianship it's no wonder. Ever since then, I've been putting together piece by piece different stuff that I love that Jeffrey played on as well...coincidence? I think not! What a master of groove. RIP.
The sound at 2:45 is totally amazing. The whole band is perfectly tuned together and that synthesizer is awesome! No other version of this song sounds quite the same without that synth (and Steve Porcaro). I have been listening to this version every 2 days or so for the past 2 years!
Man I posted without seeing your post saying almost the same thing. Yes, the break starting at 2:45 is freakin' G-R-E-A-T. Isn't it amazing that you could play this for most people these days, and they wouldn't even get it. They're missing the whole boat of this level of talent. I honestly feel sorry for them because it's like missing a whole other aspect of sex or something.

When I found out my band wanted to play "Lido Shuffle", I studied Jeff's shuffle beat over and over again and could not figure it out for the life of me. Then I found a guy on youtube who broke it down into it's basic components and finally figured it out, after hours and hour of practice....toughest drum part I have ever learned to play, bar none!

On the other hand, he's up there with some really hard working talented (I venture to guess) guys, and they don't deserve to have him so coked out of his gore he can't remember the song, just irresponsible of him....still love the video either way!!!!
I love this video!!!!! Boz is fu***** up so bad & that guy on keyboards (who has looks like he's never missed a note in his life!) finally goes into a panic & tries to cover up for Boz,LMAO! I know what it feels like when someone you are on stage with is fu**** up, (not music, obviously) & I hate it, but it sure is funny to watch!
It's almost like Boz Skaggs wrote songs that perfectly matched Jeff Porcaro's drumming style. Jeff played with soul, something missing from many of today's speedy, technical drummers.
For another dose of Boz Skaggs and Jeff Porcaro syncing perfectly check out the lesser known song 'Some Imagination." It's still one of my favorite. Pure magic.
And that's just Jeff Porcaro. I'd have loved to catch all of that talent on stage live myself. This is the stuff that makes life good!
This is the earliest video recording of "Lido Shuffle" I could find. Of course, you can listen to the original recording from the album anytime. I just liked the video.
The whole performance is awesome, but I really dig the first 29 seconds ;-) Jeff (RIP) has already kicked off and Boz needs to pick up on the groove, but it sounds so tight, excellent!
Yep,Jeff really is a Rock n Roll drummer first and foremost.Of course hes an anything he wants to be drummer, but knows that rocking the crap out o the crowd comes first.Smoking post thanks.
Saw Boz at Palais theatre Melbourne on Friday - he and his band are still excellent and accomplished performers - highly recommended if you are lucky enough to have him tour your town
Yeah, Boz was the Buzz in the 1970's , back in the mid 80's i worked as an radio announcer and i played this song on high rotation, the song is know for it's POWER and it's a drummer's Fav, cause there's a lot going on and it's not as easy as Jeff makes it look, I wish this clip was shown to some current crop of drummers and some music no- it- all's, Because Jeff Porcaro is just simply ' The Best ' in my humble opinion . [ RIP Jeff ]
Spot on Man, Im a guitarist but as a kid I seen Jeff on the box one night after a school gig, changed my life forever, Jeff is the greatest, THE groove master!!
Boz is one cool dude for sure. He is one of the few white guys that can claim he has true SOUL! There are few that can sing like the Boz. Plus ole' Boz had the moves in the 70's too!
i still cant get over how smooth the timing is on that shuffle beat. not an easy song to play on the drums...you can fake it but jeff plays it the best.
ahhhh...diese schlechten verstärker in den 70er jahren geben dem ganzen einen charme, der unvergleichlich ist :)...so einen sound bekommt man heute einfach nicht mehr hin ....schade
Boz got lost once in the song early but managed to stay in it as the band kept pushing forward and at a round 3.15 everybody seems to do their own version, however they again manage to finish the song all together, still a great video and one of my 70ies favorites, lots of energy and joy there!
hey does anyone know what notes to play during the keyboard solo after the 2nd chorus? I believe it is an arpeggio of this sequence: G/D, D, Bb/F, F, C/E, loop back
this is so bad motherfucking ass, especially the drummer at the very first of this vid.holy!!!!!!!!!!! im a good drummer, but i dont know if i could ever pull that shit off.

Boz is one cool dude for sure. He is one of the few white guys that can claim he has true SOUL! There are few that can sing like the Boz. Plus ole' Boz had the moves in the 70's too!

i still cant get over how smooth the timing is on that shuffle beat. not an easy song to play on the drums...you can fake it but jeff plays it the best.

funny how he makes that mistake at about 2:00 in, nevertheless, a great song, they don't do it like that anymore

ahhhh...diese schlechten verstärker in den 70er jahren geben dem ganzen einen charme, der unvergleichlich ist :)...so einen sound bekommt man heute einfach nicht mehr hin ....schade

Yeah, Boz porked the ending. That's why you hire pros to play your songs - they get paid to NOT fuck up.
These were pros who coaxed Boz to a smooth landing.

I believe it is an arpeggio of this sequence: G/D, D, Bb/F, F, C/E, loop back
blozier2006 2 years ago
G D B (x4) F#-D-A (x4) Bb F D (x4) A F C (x4) - and I think after that, you just stack the chord every 4 bars.
This version is either running fast, or the recording was slowed. This is in B, and the studio recording is in Bb.
