We were always told it had no oxygen and could not sustain a blue atmosphere but now there is pictures both from Nasa and China showing a blue atmosphere and no explanation WTF! To know the real color take a telescope and look in it -- Mars is red (from iron oxide). Atmosphere color depends on sun height and camera exposure. To take Martian picture without atmosphere a special wavelength camera is used which does not capture atmosphere, but ground details only.
Let me clear the mess. Many cameras used in astronomy capture specific narrow light wavelength. Picture essentially is black and white, to make it more appealing for the eye they replace black and white with red and white or yellow and white or red and black or whatever. This is false color picture.
when camera captures picture in visible wavelength (or several cameras used for red, green and blue light for example and later combined into one) picture is caller true color.
@ScienceAround: The actual process is called multispectral photography and it's a bit more complicated. There are several papers on this. The guys at Cornell Uni actually reconstruct the spectra of every pixel in an image and later on use the iCAM02 image appearance operator to account for white point adaptation and several other psychovisual phenomena.
There are several papers on the Pancam calibration pipeline, spectral reconstruction etc. Just download them, they are quite interesting.

I think the main reason for N.A.S.A. (Never A straight Answer) colorizing the photos they release to the public is really quite simple. Colorized photos make it extremely difficult to spot any kind of anomaly that might be present in any given photo, whereas true color photos tend to enhance the viewer's perception and scrutiny of their photographs. Remember, NASA isn't all that smart. They are simply afraid the general public may find something that they might have missed in their own analysis.

Mars has huge dust storms regular. The red in the sky is red dust. Pictures with a white sky is when all the dust has fallen back to the ground.
The pictures you claim have clouds in them on Mars is actually permafrost on the ground.
That speck of white you show in another picture was frost exposed after the lander robot had scooped a sample of Martian soil.

For one, its simply TRADITION to call it the Red Planet. and in 3000+/- years when we terraform it, we'll STILL call it the red planet. Second, red and yellow arein the same color spectrum, so, who really cares if one day they call it red and the next its yellow? Last, there are LOTS of diff shades of soil here on earth as well. Including green atmosphere sometimes!

1.mars is almost identical to earth in the way it could at one point support life and did and in a way still does.
this theory stems from the 2 polar caps,the single celled lifeforms we found in ice brought back from mars and the structure like shapes found on the surface.

To know the real color take a telescope and look in it -- Mars is red (from iron oxide). Atmosphere color depends on sun height and camera exposure. To take Martian picture without atmosphere a special wavelength camera is used which does not capture atmosphere, but ground details only.

Let me clear the mess. Many cameras used in astronomy capture specific narrow light wavelength. Picture essentially is black and white, to make it more appealing for the eye they replace black and white with red and white or yellow and white or red and black or whatever. This is false color picture.
when camera captures picture in visible wavelength (or several cameras used for red, green and blue light for example and later combined into one) picture is caller true color.

@ScienceAround: The actual process is called multispectral photography and it's a bit more complicated. There are several papers on this. The guys at Cornell Uni actually reconstruct the spectra of every pixel in an image and later on use the iCAM02 image appearance operator to account for white point adaptation and several other psychovisual phenomena.
There are several papers on the Pancam calibration pipeline, spectral reconstruction etc. Just download them, they are quite interesting.

I hope the discussion will end with the next Mars rover mission where the cameras will use a combination of Bayer pattern CCDs (for "true color" RGB images) and filter wheels (for scientific purposes, spectral analysis).

When the first Viking Lander images were shown on television in 1976 they showed Mars with a blue sky. The newscasters were shocked because they had been told in advance the sky would appear red. Of course, NASA re-released the "corrected" image with a red sky but, of course, our vigilant American press (which loves to pat itself on the back every chance it gets), never bothered to ask questions about the anomaly. When it comes to NASA, the press is one big, cheerleading, airhead.

FALSE color images are images filtered through a spectrometer [a prism that splits light and determines composition from the spectrum] and recompiled with different colors assigned to different attributes [temperature, elevation, elemental composition, density... anything the instrument in question can detect] its kind of like the Doppler radar images you see on the weather channel, the clouds aren't red and green and purple, but they color them so you can see where the rain is falling.

some of the pictures shown were altered, i know this because the colors are too extreme, no thier arent clouds on mars what you saw was carbon dioxide. which is what mars's thin atmosphere is made of. it is this way because the planet is too small to sustain a molten core, therefore its protective magnetic field stopped blocking harmfull radiation which blew most of the atmosphere away. and in the 70's they had no rover on mars, it had to be faked because they had no other way to take the photo.

Well the thing is. They made a red hue on each Mars image to make it look alien and bizarre. I was fortunate enough to have a physics professor in the eleventh grade to tell me it wasn't and I was fortunate enough to have text books involving Astronomy that show the Earth not being red, but brown. It is red. Not cherry red, but a rusty reddish brown. The color is caused by an extremely thin layer of dust. even the martian sky may appear red to the naked eye, because of this dust.
But honestly, if they wanted to make it look alien, they couldve just made the ground look grey and barren. Or white even. Hell, just doctor up some photos and make mars look like that place in etheopia with all the geysers and sulfur vents.

Your principle of the sky reflect the dust would have the be in regards the same on Earth, because our sky is full of dust. You have no idea how much a volcano will put in terms of dust into our atmosphere and how long it stays up there. Some of the dust and ash from Mount Saint Helene is still up there.

I think the main reason for N.A.S.A. (Never A straight Answer) colorizing the photos they release to the public is really quite simple. Colorized photos make it extremely difficult to spot any kind of anomaly that might be present in any given photo, whereas true color photos tend to enhance the viewer's perception and scrutiny of their photographs. Remember, NASA isn't all that smart. They are simply afraid the general public may find something that they might have missed in their own analysis.
