I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side ... Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds. ” — Robert C. Byrd, in a letter to Sen. Theodore Bilbo (D-MS), 1944,
@TruegrassBoy I don't like Sharpton or Farrakhan and especially don't like Obummer....oh...you do understand that Robert Byrd and Obama were members of the same party don't you? OH...and Al Sharpton ran as a Democrat.
Jimmb-most of those presidents were assholes. Nixon, Reagan, the Bushes??? And Clinton when he tried to take away the Senate's prerogatives. Byrd stood up for the legislative branch. This country will be worse off for his loss.
@phylmom The Obamunist is the biggest asshole yet. Robert Byrd didn't give a rat's tale about this country. The only thing he ever cared about was getting himself reelected.
@sjstern I dont dislike him for that...it was a youthful mistake. I dislike him for his self righteousness and posturing and intransigence, as testified by most Presidents who dealt with him.
I think this guy is a political train wreck. (well was) but I give credit where credit is due. This is good stuff and has a lot of pop and personality.
I don't get it. I've done serious political writing for years, paid attention to Byrd for at least two decades, knew all about his previously racist stances and his renunciation of them, etc.--and I have no idea how I missed the fact that he not only did this, but was this good. It so happens that I played in a couple of Irish traditional bands and done a bluegrass thing or two, and I'm telling you, this is damn fine--dead on pitch every time, great feel for the tunes, the whole thing. WOW.
Watching this is a sad reminder that many of those elected to serve these days are "small" men and women compared to many of those elected in the past. Those elected now are either shills for Wall St., Big Oil, Big Pharma, Big Corporations. Others are so narrowly partisan, they cannot put their politcal games aside to do what is in the best interest of the People of the United States. Rest in Peace, Senator Byrd. You are a man of a better era. May you find peace in the arms of an angel.
A hundred years from now, if we still have a country, history books will recall his speech on the use-of-force resolution for Iraq. Read it and think about how many people have been killed--including civilians in Iraq--and if it doesn't stop you cold, please don't bother to vote next time around.
@moffbombadil Yeah....I always vote for people based on their fiddle-playing skills. Who cares if he can help balance the budget or if he used to be a Klansman? What difference does any of that make? Oh...yeah...and if he can protect our borders from hordes of illegal aliens or defend us from foreign enemies...just as long as he can play the fiddle.

I don't care if he ate babies. If he was a good senator and didn't push baby-eating legislation it's still a win for me.
That clip was great.
