I have the CP50 combo and it is one of the sweetest sounding amps I have ever played...I use it in combination with my Mesa Boogie MKV....I live in amp heaven my friends.... ;)
words cannot express the happiness that overwhelmed me when i found out i use the same amp as Troy. amazingly fucking incredible amp. has the benefits of the AC30, plus a dirty as hell gain channel. if you ever have the opportunity to try one or buy one, DO IT
I met Troy back in probably what must have been 2004. He was really very humble and more than happy to just talk to me about nothing in particular for almost an hour. He is certainly one of my favorite musicians. A really talented, super cool guy.
Uh, "distortion" and "tone" are not opposites. I have played a single-hum strat through a hot-rodded jcm800 with the gain dimed, and gotten some of the warmest, clearest, sweetest, most ear-pleasing TONE from letting a chord ring out for a few seconds before I even begin to really play. A solid state amp can give you great clean tones if it's built right, but the tone of cascaded triodes and saturated pentodes can't be duplicated by a pedal or a solid state amp's gain channel.
@punkeratheart tone is subjective, what one person may think is a beautiful tone, someone else may think is trash. personally i'm not a huge distortion fan, its all up to the player though.
I have three of these guitars, and they are excellent. They're on a par with my Gibsons and other top of the line guitars. Three guitar magazines- Guitar Player, Guitar World and Guitarist(UK)- gave this axe excellent reviews. It's one of the few semis that were designed with heavy rock in mind, so stylistically it's an extremely versatile instrument. It has uncanny sustain. Its only weakness is the action, but a good tech can fix that easily. And to top it all, it's inexpensive!
@harrymosesgk I have a Fulltone Ultimate Octave. With a little messing around you can start going in that direction, but i can't really get a match going on. I don't have the same amp, though, which could be the cause, but this fuzz just sounds a little more "vintage" than the UO.
I used to have the AC50CP but in the combo form...it wasn't a bad amp but it weighed a fuckin ton, like 90lbs...did a straight trade for an Ampeg Reverberocket...surprisingly the 'Peg has more clean headroom and an added bonus ..it has some very sexy Groove Tubes which mus have come stock because the guy I got from said he bought the amp and then NEVER used it...talk about grit, beach sand in yer shorts has nothing on the Ampeg...killer reverb too
I owned this guitar in red and it was horrible. If you think you're getting what Troy actually plays you are mistaken. The neck on my was all warped, it went out of tune easily and sounded like mush. Troy's is probably a Yamaha custom shop model not the inferior Indonesia model. Just thought I'd warn anyone who was thinking of getting one.
you shouldnt base your choice of guitar on one comment on youtube... i own this guitar, its fantastic. i have also read that troy uses exactly the same guitar completely stock.... dont let one guy that had a bad experience change your mind. no offence to anyone. just trying to help.
i dunno, this guy starts talking about "too much disrtion" and "sticking to the original idea"and whatnot, yet the cp is the highest gain of all voxes ever designed
i used to have the AC50 head. It was ok but there are so many better amps for less. I got the AC30 handwired new for less than the price of an AC50 and its much better. The hi-gain channel on the AC50 is hard to find a good tone on. Way too loud aswell
i assume you are a qotsa fan. Is it good for getting a great BIG tone? Ive been looking at getting one for a while and im pretty satisfied with it. Just wanted your opinion!
love troy, love vox

but it's a fair bit less gain than something like a Bogner or a Framus...
koflan 3 years ago 3
exactly. Not that those amps are bad, but yeah, you don't want a shit ton of gain out of a vox.

What the heck is up with that flashing light? That can give folks a seizure. They should update the info with a warning.
