  • Barenaked Ladies are the best live performance I've ever seen.

  • Not bad but i like the original better

  • Bluegrass+bnl... love it.

  • Too many the BareNaked Ladies defy genres.

  • It's missing some fast picking banjo in there to be true blugrass.

  • @MSFproductionsMAIN You don't need a banjo to play bluegrass, mate. :) Just a nice guitar and mandolin.

  • @Pandolin11 But there still not playing it in a bluegrass style. You can still play rock and roll with a mandolin and guitar to. As long as your playing it in a rock style format. Same with any instrument. Ever listen to Bele' Fleck and the Flecktones? Awsome Group!! They are bluegeass dispite there very diffrent style of Bluegrass.

    This is just more unplugged.

  • @MSFproductionsMAIN Well if you think about it, Barenaked Ladies are not naturally a 'bluegrass' band. They are a Rock/Rap band. But they're more of an improv band than anything. Just saying you don't need a banjo to play standard bluegrass. :)

  • "Can't understand what I mean, that's not my problem."

  • Not Bluegrass!!

  • i chicka china the Chinese chicken

  • @lolo2556 especially when I was a teenage boy but then so does every other teenage boy in the world.

  • This is bluegrass music, not country. They are two separate genres.

  • i love the bluegrass touch in here with the mandolin and standing bass this is awsome

  • I would say this is more skiffle than bluegrass, perhaps a blend of the two.

  • I can't stop listening to this version, it's immense!

  • my roots r country/hillbilly, but so many sad & slow songs i switched. i already like "barenaked ladies" & i like "one week" but this version is GR8. & the band show a lot more personality & cute!

  • i would buy a Barenaked Ladies bluegrass cd before one of there normal ones! YAH! SAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaLLLeesss MAN

  • @strumem90 Is the salesman thing from Peewees Playhouse?

  • @ImmortalGodhead They took the salesmen from fellow Canadian band Rush, who they make fun of often. :)

  • @marvinriscos Ah I see. I know Rush, and thanks to you and Youtube, I know get the joke. Thank you, sir.

  • Kevin's face at 1:53 to 1:55 =D

  • Salesman.

  • D'awwwwwww SALESMAN!

  • I love the Ladies.

  • Best youtube-live-vid of bnl...such a great performance...HEROS!

  • I love this, gyaaaah SALESMAN!

  • @coryginnings00 go spam somewhere else

  • I always have loved this version!!!

  • hellllll yeah!

  • watch?v=rs4qn_bHQQ0 also for the Tsunami relief ...Ed w/Rush...very cool and the channel link is the guy who plays Bubbles from Trailer Park Boys

  • its kinda better slower lol you can understand them now :)

  • Still like "The Bathroom Sessions" version a little better, but this one is great!

  • Probably my favourite rendition of One Week- Eds awesome guitar. "Salesman!"

  • Peoples listen - Its music!

Quit trying to to put music in a cubbyhole box on a shelf with a neat little label.

Enjoy what the artists have done, its a fine acoustic performance.

Take it for what it is and quit worrying about what catagory some suit at the record company decided to pigenhole it as.

  • This is the best version of this song there is!!!

  • definitely not bluegrass...

  • relax man, it's just a song. crack a smile.

  • Bluegrass musicians are truly some of the finest in the world. Check out the acoustic guitar work of Kenny Smith, of the Kenny and Amanda Smith band and Dan Timinsky of Union Station, Allison Krause's band. True players. Talk about flyin' fingers! In the great tradition of Roy Clark and Flatt and Scruggs (the Beverly Hillbilyl's theme). I bet almost any song given the bluegrass treatment, when played and sung well like BNL did here, would kick ass!

  • I agree, I'm sure you know but if you don't check out "Old Crow Medicine Show" their one of the best younger bluegrass bands around

  • @soxfan657 OCMS isn't bluegrass. they're a combination of folk and Old-Time.

  • @jazzfolkrocker Your right. "Next Go Round" is my favorite song clearly Old Time. However I'm pretty sure they cover blue grass and even blues (they are from Tennessee). A talented group such as them probably don't need/want to stick to one genre. Not trying to sound like I know more or anything it is just what their wikipedia article said. Great band though, so are the BNL. Thanks for the response!

  • One of the best, most true relationship songs EVER! As Lennon once said, (in response to the line, "Love means never having to say you're sorry") "Love means having to say you're sorry every 5 minutes." ;) Definitely a different version, but I like it...:)

  • i adore them :D

  • me 2!!!

  • Freakin Awesome

  • I hate country with a passion. but somehow I've always sort of liked bluegrass.

  • yeah, its humble and no twang!!!

  • totally agree, idk what it is about bluegrass that just beats the hell out of country

  • @WallardTree I'm the same way. Bluegrass is more raw and melodic, takes more talent to perform. Country is cookie cutter and boring and about driving trucks and drinking beer and driving trucks while drinking beer.

  • @WallardTree I don't know why almost everybody hates country. Here, in Spain we are glad to hear you country classic songs!

  • @WallardTree

    Exactly

  • incredable!!

  • awesome!!!!!!

  • amazinggg.

  • omg thats wikid:O

  • I wonder where they got that name from?

  • They claim it came from Page and Robertson having back-row seats to a truly boring Bob Dylan concert 20 years ago, and instead of listening to the concert they started riffing like they were old rock critics. "Yeah, Dylan was much better back when the Uptown Shrimp were his backing band." "Well, I remember back in 74 when he came through, and the Barenaked Ladies were his opening act." It kinda snowballed from there.

  • Thank you!

  • coolest thing ever!

  • I want a band like this. Just one that has fun and does what they do best the best they can and be amazing in the long.. There are very few bands like BNL these days that can do things like this.

  • he will always be our barenaked lady even though he left :/ <3

  • OF SALESMEN!!

Made me laugh my ass off, that line did.

  • YES! HAHA SALESMEN!

  • WOOT! Eddie's such a hardcore Rush fan. <3

  • explain "a saleman"

  • from Spirit of the Radio by Rush:

For the words of the profits

Are written on the studio wall,

    Concert hall ---

    Echoes with the sounds...

    Of salesmen.

  • I thought that was a "Pee-wee's Playhouse" reference.

  • You really can't place a genre on BNL with all the different styles they can come up with. All you can say is that they're truly Canadian.

  • sounds better this way i think...lol

  • i love this song

  • It is a great song.

  • Ed is so sexy :)

  • sweet

  • I saw these guys live in '91. They all look the same. Still sound great but dress better.

  • Poor drummer, just standing there with the shaker.

    He looks so awkward.

  • If you've ever seen them live you'd know this isn't true.

  • when was this? what day and year? :)

  • i am unsure but i am guessing it was around 2 almost 3 years ago by looking at the date added and also they have this version on barenaked for the holidays

  • ok, coz the funny thing about this is that Ed has looked the same for almost every year, and thats positive, good looking guy ! but haha, cant see if it`s old or not.

    thanks for answering. :)

  • Saturday 29th January 2005. It was preformed for the Tsunami Relief concert.

  • Ed is so gergous ! i really love him

  • I love this live arrangement. I come back and check it out every time I need a little pick-me-up. Never, ever gets old!

  • this version may be better than the original, lets go investigate.....

  • TYLER HAS HAIR!!!

  • Lol, Tyler looked a bit lost.

  • Haha well you take the man's drum set away and give him that thing...I think I'd be a bit lost, too.

  • haha, yeah, poor thing. lol

  • for me it doesn't matter it its bluegrass ot not, THIS SONG ROX MY SOX!

  • I love how salesman is one of the tags!

  • Even though this is just folksy and not really bluegrass, I still love this version.

  • TYLER WHERE'S YOUR DRUM KIT?

  • Well this is where the iTunes version comes from, eh?

    Cool stuff!

  • i love this version better!!

  • Man, Hearn on the mandolin and Creggan on the bass were just goin' to town!

  • No one said it was Bluegrass....

  • it says bluegrass in the title dumbass

  • Not quite bluegrass. Real cool though.

  • Anyone have this as an MP3?

    Would be muchly appreciated.

  • Yeah. Just made one. Message me with your e-mail address and I'll send.

  • This is more of an Indie/Folk style. Some musicians would say that if you want to call it "Bluegrass", it would be considered a very progressive style. This is a brilliant remake of the song!!! I faithfully play it and some people/musicians love playing this song!!!

  • talented bunch

  • Im not much for stuff outta the country gene but the bluegrass is close to home..its really great!

  • wats bluegrass mean?

  • It's a kinda country.

  • wtf man you dont know what bluegrass is

  • Gee, don't know what to tell ya, its all kind of fundamental. Wiki says:

Bluegrass music is a form of American roots music and is a sub-genre of country music, inspired by the traditional music of immigrants from the United Kingdom

Traditional bluegrass is based around acoustic stringed instruments, such as guitar, banjo, fiddle, and upright bass, with or without vocals

In bluegrass, as in jazz, each instrument takes a turn improvising the melody, while the others revert to backing.

  • Bluegrass is AWESOME!!

  • Awesome

  • woah !!! i LOVE this version !!!

  • i'll buy that for a dollar!

  • If anyone knows where I could find a cut of this song please let me know. WOW!

  • Canada for Asia. Teh lolz

  • seriously so frickin amazing!

not many bands could be this amazing!

    BNL=AMAZING!

    =]

  • how many other bands could do that :D kick ass.

  • W00T!!!!

  • AWSOME!!!!!!!!!

  • Sweet!! that was cool

  • fuck u

  • Poor Tyler doesn't have much to do. Awesome version anyway!

  • BNL kicks ASS, period, end of sentence!

  • chickity china the Chinese chicken

  • chickity china the Chinese chicken!

  • Chickity china, the Chinese chicken!

  • chickity china the chinese chicken!!

  • BNL are some of the most talented and gifted contemporary artists and this seals it, I think. They are amazing. An earmark of great musicians is the ability to stretch beyond one type of music. LOVE this and LOVE BNL!

  • i thought i hated bluegrass music. after hearing this one, i guess i just dislike the accent. love the music!

  • Just love it! Awesome version...

  • This is a kick ass remake of this song. Great job Ladies!!

  • Nice to hear a little 'Duelling Banjos' in the middle :~)

  • shit! this is what im looking for.. yahoo!

  • Great, I love it.

  • Rush!!!!!

  • I get the debate and all, but frankly I can't get past this posted line

"The point is that they've taken a rap song "

Rap??? This white girl is confused!

  • only in Canada. ILU, BNL.

  • Tyler on shaker... yes.

  • I love the expression on Kevin's face during the "instrumental", the callback to Ed's little solo. The expression on his face is simply awesome.

  • Yes it is.

  • Because you're an expert, right? It is indeed a "bluegrass" version of the hit "One Week." Arguing about it just makes you look stupid.

  • No, it's not!

  • i love BNL SOO MUCH!! reely cool flip on it

  • I love this version. They change it up everytime they play Live. haha. They did a bee gee's version one time for If i Had a million dollars..great band...haha

  • props for doin the bluegrass thang

  • Weird Al's version is a parody. Also, as much of a Weird Al fan that I am, I think this is much better.

  • i agree i love wierd all sooooooo much too but the original i a lot better

  • soooo good.

  • BNL are awesome. Their live shows are amazingly entertaining. Noone does it better than them!

  • THIS IS FUCKING AWESOME

  • I love barenaked ladies. the end

  • I love the egg shaker

  • This is so much better than the original version. Love it!

  • I love bluegrass, the mandolin was a nice touch.

  • They are basically spoofing themselves, and I think that's a riot!

  • Anyone know, or able to find, the mando's chord sequence for this? Is it the same as the guitar and the normal version?

Would be nice to just randomly play this sometimes either live or just when I've got a few friends round... ...

  • RUSH RUSH URSH HRSURRUSHRRUSHR

  • A mandolin does not bluegrass music make...yuck.

  • You can't explain that to these folks. By their flawed logic, Alvino Rey would be a country music artist just because he was sitting behind a pedal steel......and all of Dire Strait's music turned into country when Paul Franklin toured with them on pedal steel. In the final resolution, the instrument does not define a genre of music, the way it's played does.

  • Exactly. I guess Rod Stewart was a bluegrass artist since a mandolin was used on "Maggie May."

  • I think you're kind of missing the point.

The point is that they've taken a rap song and put a Bluegrass style twist on it, sure, it's not actually bluegrass, but the point of it is just an alternate take on a "pop" style mix of song, in truth this song kind of defies genrefication.

Also, there's more to music than Genre, Sit back, stfu and enjoy ;)

  • Ooooohhhhhhh, yeah, well.........hmmmm, I guess I just didn't think of it like that....oh well, you gotta admit one thing, that's a pretty red Les Paul the guitar player is using.

  • As I've said to trolls before and I'll say to trolls again:

    "Constructive input or Gtfo"

  • Why do I have to stfu or gtfo? I said it's not bluegrass and it's not. I didn't say these guys are not talented or that I didn't enjoy what they do. I didn't say I was an expert; I've made a good living playing bluegrass and C&W music for 30 years. As for trolls, they're best known by their own kind. I didn't miss the point, it was posted as a bluegrass video (in the title) and I said it's not bluegrass. One thing's for sure, I've wasted more time on you than you're worth.

  • I'ts not the fact that it's not bluegrass that's not constructive, it's your attitude. Sarcasm will get you nowhere.

  • Les Paul? What the fuck are you talking about? Ed Robertson is playing a Taylor W10! It's an acoustic guitar, NOT a Les Paul! And it's not even red!
