The mother uses her mouth like a hand. Even when she looks like she's biting the pup, she's really just holding it in her mouth. Some dog moms go bonkers and really do kill their pups though. I'm glad this one didn't. :-)

It's a trait that has gone back to way before dogs were domesticated animals and it is still innate in them now. I personally have witnessed a lot of still births from my Labrador and no fussing she just eats the puppy and it's over and done with. Same with every dog I have ever bred.

If she were actually trying to kill the puppy, she'd be biting a lot harder than that. It actually isn't uncommon for some animals to eat their offspring, but I can't think of a single mammalian species that does this. Also a mother usually only allows a runt to die if food is scarce which typically isn't the case for domestic dogs.

@MyEpixFail3 Dogs tend to neglect their young if a person has messed with them at a very young age (And by that I mean, just being picked up or whatever.) Because, then you're scent is on them.. and It's then like that puppy has become metaphorically filthy and doesn't belong to them any more.

Aside from Grooming, she is also teaching him a lesson in domination. When ever he moves she will hold him until he stops, until he is submissive and knows momma is boss. Plus it teaches him to do this to other dogs too.

We had two Siberian Huskies, and they played by grabbing each other around the neck and "wrestling" their whole bodies. She's just training her puppy. I'm wondering if this puppy was an only puppy as our female had a "singleton" in her first "litter." The 2nd (and last time) she had 4 puppies. She lived to be 16 years & 2 months old, and the father lived to be 13 1/2 years old!
