in australia we have organisations that take hold of food waste at the end of the day and we give it to homeless shelters. people volunteer there time to collect and cook for the needy. I believe it should be done like that in other countries...
once when i was a poor college student i got a place down the shore for the summer and was able to furnish it with nice stuff i found on the curb like a couple of comfy couches, some chairs, a lamp, coffee table, and a huge TV all in great condition... but glad i never had to dive for food
AshenStar, what city do you live in? Maybe you can connect with some experienced freegans who will help you learn the best spots. There are some freegan websites and forums as starting points - you also could try going through a student organization at your school or even craigslist. Offer something for barter in exchange?
I've been wanting to dumpster dive for food for awhile now. (About 3 years) Being an unemployed student with no government assistance can be rough! Tonight I finally got the courage to go look in dumpsters. My search was completely fruitless! I couldn't even find the dumpsters for all the places I tried! Whole Foods, Zupans, Trader Joe's, Portland Bagel Co., Elephant's Deli, Moonstruck, some paper store. Very frustrating after walking around for 3 hours! So...I am at a loss as to what to do.
nicely done; thanks for your work on this. I am glad my friend forwarded it to me. It taps into some of the issues I've covered on my documentary on homelessness in Portland and Vancouver. I was glad for the comment about never getting sick on the food from dumpster diving- that was a little 'risky' for me but the waste- man!! I know; it is terrible. Thanks for sharing how much is senseless and could be used by others!!

Why Emily has a deep manly voice? Is she a male to female transsexual?

Awesome. We should build a place somewhere that meets our standards of common sense green living.
