Thanks for uploading this. I reccomend people try reading/listening to "Hellstroms Hive" by Frank Herbert. Great book about people who live like insects underground. The professor in this documentary is the main character.
I saw this only one other time, on television nearly 40 years ago. Since then I've concentrated mainly on physics; but back then, as a kid, I was equally interested in insects, especially ants and bees. This film is 50% documentary, 50% sci-fi, and 100% fascinating. Thanks.
Big thanks to Bratgoul for finding and uploading this film! Lalo Schifrin's ("Mannix", "Mission:Impossible", "Dirty Harry") avante-garde musical score was suitably creepy in that effective way horror music was done in the 1960's and '70's. Part of me wonders if Carl Sagan modeled his "Cosmos" series on Lawrence Pressman's perfromance...just not as twitchy.
I sat through the whole 11 episodes, thoroughly enjoying the info about the insects, but constantly thinking we could do without the music, or this freaky presenter. Then I get to the end, and find out that this nutcase is actually just an actor pretending to be a nutcase! Thoroughly enjoyed though. Thanks for posting it!
why oh why did i not think sooner to look on you tube. Ive been telling people about this movie for years. I originally saw it as a kid on a weekend late-late night movie. It had a huge impact on me. It was creepy as well as food for thought for my little mind. Thank you so much for sharing this and i can finally show it to my sister whom i know will enjoy it.
I experienced seeing this film in the 70s. It engendered strong reflection and memories that remain with me today. I also remember my date had the brain of a marshmellow and was more interested in what flavor of milkshake I wiould buy her than discussing the implications of the film.
This film is a lovely example of the cynical, nihilistic zeitgeist of the early 70s. It caused a small sensation at the time; if I recall correctly it spooked a lot of people...and I remember the "apocalyptic" final image of the beetle's mandibles against the sunset being used in media to promote it. Sorry to see very little has changed vis-a-vis the environmental destruction we are wreaking. Oddly it also demonstrates that a female dominant "society" (bees) is no less vicious than a male one.
Thanks so much for uploading this! I saw it when it first came out. Just tried to buy it, to show it to others, but to no avail. Your post was mentioned on google. Good to see it again after all this time.
Thanks for posting this, I loved it. I never heard of this movie before, even as a child (I was born in 1968). This is right up my alley too, I would've gone nuts over it.
After watching it I'm thinking about how ants tend to aphids for their honeydew and it's giving me a good laugh. If our existance is beneficial to certain insects, would they develop the habit of tending to us? Imagine a troop of ants dragging a box of candy to your door because you seem a bit down lately.
wow , i remember as a kid when this came out i had wondered what it was about yet wanted to see it never did til now. thanks . also look at some of the videos i have , ive got who killed the electric car and stuff better. but thanks this was neat, was made in the late 60s

Indeed, this film has its flaws, but it greatly transcends the documentary genre, like "who killed the electric car" does too, sometimes.
thanks for commenting.
