I think the class 20 is powered and required for the braking system on the coaches

So is the diesel engine actually switched on? Cos I'm just curious as to what happens to it when it is being pulled by Sarah Siddons and vice versa.

No. The 4TC set wasnt an EMU. It was unpowered. Originally designed to be used in push/pull formation with a class 33. The 4TC's can't operate on their own.
