i got one of those 2000 (i got a 2001) polo 6n2 but i think, to be honest, it looks "okay" if you think about a 9 years old car, it looks survivable^^
I had one that caught fire when I was driving out of a car park -.- Had to be extinguished using the fire extinguisher of a friendly taxi driver nearby and then, after firetrucks had checked it was safe, it was taken away.

According to Wikipedia, the 1999 facelift of the Polo includes a stronger chassis/coachwork, which makes it more safe than the pre-facelift versions.
