I hate it when people say "Bernie sucks at Randy's songs" This poor guy had to learn all of the material in a few days and with limited rehersal time. Bernie busted his ass trying to fill the hole left in their hearts from Randy's tragic and untimley death and how do Ozzy's fans repay him? By flipping him off, spitting on him, throwing all sorts of shit at him,and holding up signs saying "RANDY LIVES!!!" I feel so bad for poor Bernie...
Whoever said bernie is a great guitarist is plum crazy !!! I understand that he only had 4 days to learn 14 songs, but it wasnt that,he was sloppy and off key throughout the whole song and every song ive heard him do with ozzy in 82' was horrible !!!
I'm not ripping randy and my original comment using the word sterile was not intended in a derogatory fashion. I saw Randy with Ozzy when they first toured here and I remember the first van Halen gig at the Hammersmith Odeon. The playing by both guitarists those night was stunning. BUt the genre thaey spawned of excessive two handed tapping and how many notes can I play per second is not for me. I see it the other way round stop dissing Bernie, who still rocks today.
Bernie sounds like he's just guessing at how the solo goes...i know this was RIGHT after Randy died and he probably didn't have time to learn all the stuff but it just sounds weird.
Oh... I just remembered that Ozzy did his first two albums with the guys from URIAH HEAP as his rhythm section (but had Aldrich and Randy for tours etc)... and Uriah Heap were... a Deep Purple clone band!
WOW! I was watching old GILLAN videos (his band after Deep Purple) and liked some of his guitarist Bernie Torme. One song (Mr Universe) begins sounding like "Mr. Crowley" years BEFORE Ozzy's song. It occcured to me that many metal heads were listening to GILLAN b/c it's all in there.
Looking for Torme's band GMT... I discover he replaced Randy Rhoads briefly!
Then, I remembered I was going to see Ozzy live when Rhoads died and... I just remembered hearing Bernie's name back then!
I'm getting a lump in my throat listening to this. Every song on Blizzard, with the exception of No Bone Movies, makes me think of the plane crash and what happened afterward. I can't listen to it.
I give the guy credit. No way in Hell would I have attempted to do what he did and do a show after Randy's demise. With fans holding up signs saying "Randy Lives!" and giving the poor guy the finger, he overcame a hell of a lot to do these shows with Ozzy.
Don Airey saved the band. Rudy was in DEEP mourning and didn't really want to be there (can't blame him). Bernie is a great guitar player but to be fair he had to learn 12 songs in 3 days with 2 rehersals. They made it through and that's what counts.
Bernie took to stage with OZZY and the rest of the band and said to OZ i don't . now if I can do this I think Ozzy than said I can't have you with my band band if you if you don't think you can do this. Next Oz got Brad Gills on GTR. and did speak of the devil. Maybe if Bernie would have keep his mouth shut he could have made ozzy recordings. Remember Gills is from Night Ranger. Bernie did an album called Back To Babylon. I think Bernie would have Rocked.
I personally feel that bernie should have gotten the respect of al the fans for stepping up to help ozzy, but instead was treated like shit, sad that this probably was a major factor in ultimately ending the band "Gillan" but then again we may never had been blessed with Deep Purples reunion & "Perfect Strangers"
Reading Mr. Sarzo's book right now and at the point when Randy is killed and they are auditioning guitarists, It seemed as though Rudy's brother had the inside track but Jet records (the label) promised Bernie Torme the gig unbeknown to Ozzy and the rest of the band.
@SmittyHeWasNumber1 the are two different platers/ after randy passed ozzy and sharon thought the only person that could fill his shoes right off the bat was pat travers. pat said no way. they got bernie for about five shows while the trained brad gillis and he knew most anyways. thats why its so much brad on speak. it shouldnt have been but what was he going to do. in my mind i would have loved to see pat travers take a go. he is cool.
Check out the album Live (from 1984) for a taste of Benie live, in particular Lightning strikes which sends shivers down the spine every time I listen to it.

Bernie Torme was and is a proper blues rock guitarist. Randy Rhoads like van Halen was a more sterile product of American Rock. Each to their own I say.
Randy Rhoads was way beyond the old unision bends of Bernie and was far from sterile. He was a pioneer and innovator in the field of studio guitar work and created a new approach to metal never seen before.A little of a reference to Blackmore and Uli but way out there!
I love Bernie, hes a major hero of mine for his work in Gillan, and i love him with GMT, but in no way could you say that Randy, or EVH in the early days were "sterile". Listen to Diary Of A Madman, or Van Halen 2, nothing sterile about the playing on those albums! Certainly many of the shred guitarists that followed were sterile and derivative, but that doesnt apply to Randy or Eddie. Randy was a great loss to music, and a totally distinctive player.
Your right and I too admire the work of Eddie and Randy. But, in my opinion, time has shown that blues based rock guitar is king over unnecessary speed, tapping and widdly excesses. Give me Blackmore any day and for that matter Bernie!
Uh, dude Ritchie Blackmore is the godfather of shred guitar, in case you haven't noticed, and he seems to be more geared towards classical to me. And this is in no way unnecessary speed, the playing that Randy did was very tasteful and there was never a note that didn't further the song in some way, i can't say the same for Van Halen though, but i do enjoy his playing.
That is true, but I was explaining to him that he did use unnecessary speed and that he was a pioneer of shred, as opposed to being a clapton-esque blues guitar feeling driven blues player(though he was capable)
@RonniePeterson "...proper blues rock musician.." Huh? The blues are AMERICAN! I mean, I give Torme props for stepping into some HUGE shoes...but it just wasn't his "cup o' tea", right mate?
@dk7dk7 The blues are American? Well I agree with you. But blues rock definitely for me was shaped this side of the pond and is BRITISH, in my iopinion I hasten to add. Please don't misunderstand me I don't doubt the technical wizardry of Randy, Eddie and co. Its just I prefer the blues rock based sound of Blackmore, Gallagher, Clapton, Page, Beck, Hendrix. Bernie was certainly more influenced from this style of playing.
Both Randy and Bernie are great. However, as a musician, Randy dwarfs Bernie in every which way. And I say this truely as a fan of both players.
In the studio Randy dwarfs Bernie, and live he dwarfs Bernie even more, listen to the live Tribute album with Ozzy and Randy as a frame of reference. Anyone truely saying Bernie could out play Randy is deafened by their fandom.
Its all a matter of taste but for me Bernie live whether in his own band or with Gillan was/is amazing. None of that excessive tapping and speed for speeds sake etc. Don't get me wrong Tribute is a great live record of Randy but check out the Live Torme album 1984 for sense of what Bernie is really like live. Lightning strikes alone is worth the entrance money ay any Bernie gig!
I agree with you. I have to say, Bernie obviously didn't put in the time to learn Randy's solos. I have played in cover bands and always played Randy's stuff note for note out of respect and reverance. Brad Gillis did a damn good job, that is why Ozzy hired him. I like Bernie, and have talked to him. I don't know if he couldn't play Randy's solos or didn't have/take the time. Even this song, which the solo is not that hard, he doesn't do it justice. Why?
Maybe so, but after Randy died, the show had to go on, quite literally, and so I think it was cool of 'em to hire Bernie Torme for such a task. They didn't just ask him to join there and then, he was asked to Audition, along with other Guitar Players. If Bernie got the Job then he obviously did something right.
I already stated I was a fan of Bernie. He's great for having stepped into Randy Rhoads shoes and saving the day (Huge shoes to step into).
He did it well for having like a few days to practice and learn the songs. But the fact remains that he doesn't have a thing on Randy in terms of guitar playing.

i think Don Airey's keeping the whole thing together...but it was a horrible time for everyone ....
i think they had too keep the whole show on the road to
avoid financial disaster ...
Bernie steps off a plane and has to step intp Randys shoes ....
so let's not be too harsh ....
what you hear is a band hanging by a thread ....and in mourning !......
RIP Randy
