It's interesting how this is "labeled" Prog rock...but it sopunds a lot closer to certain lyrical and artistic conceits present in Metal, and now fully realized by the Volta. The most starrtling thing however, is the crazy lyrics. Secondly, the vocalists extremely high vocal (not studio enhanced I don't think), just amazing.

i know this is a little late, but i grew up with the music of Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin , don't get me wrong, i love those bands, but The Mars Volta is one of the most complex bands in the history of rock. The bands on the radio today are all pretty much crap, and in my option not worth my ear canal. The Mars Volta is a greatly needed breath of fresh air that is slowly saving rock and roll from becoming POP and ROLL.
I'm glad that these dudes are getting some real "mainstream" exposure. I've known about them for years now and they rule!! Definitely the pink floyd/Led Zeppelin of our generation.

Based on how successful Disturbed has been and everything, with their album Inside The Fire was on debuting at No. 1, everyone must of thought they were going to get the grammy. These guys probably deserved it, not a lot of people know about them and Disturbed is already successful enough.

Hendrix didn't know two shits about theory; he couldn't even read music, yet he wrote some of the greatest music in history. Too many fucking people are way too worried about the technical side of music these days. And yeah, I realize TMV are extremely technical and theoretical at times, but they also just write good shit.
