  • How does a guitar world lesson end up here and not on the actual site? Did someone rip a dvd?

  • i shook this guys hand once :D

  • @theNINE6661 jealous

  • @theNINE6661 awesome, so have i !! :D

  • or you could get thicker strings so they won't get all loose when you play and tune it lower(:

  • im not sure why but he keeps reminding me of a7x's the rev...............

  • i wish it wasnt so damn blurry!

  • i love how he strums!!

  • @Ellinarkkari Yngwie LMFAO you consider him to even be a guitarist? HAHAHAHAHAHA you don't have a clue what you're talking about

  • @MeltTheStrings Are you really dissing Yngwie? Dude, do you even play guitar? Learn to apreciate music you judgemental jerk.

  • @scorpio110984 What kind of moronic question is that? I'm watching a lesson on how to play guitar, and my account name is MeltTheStrings. Learn to appreciate music? Dude I appreciate music, but I don't appreciate Yngwie's random super mario-like noises he makes on the guitar. Donegan is a REAL guitarist, better then Yngwie will ever be.

  • @MeltTheStrings My bad dude. I must've clicked you by accident. Please forgive the insult, I meant to direct that comment at Ellinarkkari. I was a little buzzed at the time ;). But still. Even if you don't care for his musical style, you can't say that he's a poor musician. He's never been my favorite, but he's still exceedingly talented.

  • @scorpio110984 I wouldn't say exceedingly talented, talented yes, but what people don'e realize is that playing guitar isn't about just shredding, it's about how much effort you put into making your song. Most of Yngwie's songs sound like they either came from super-mario or just random fretting, where as dan puts a lot of soul and effort into his playing.

  • @MeltTheStrings Most of his stuff, maybe. But like I said, he's never been my favorite. I'm partial to the likes of Joe Satriani myself. He has done some rather inventive things that were a bit more soulful than what he usually plays but I think you have a good point there.

  • Never said he was but hes one of the besr metal guitarest around today just becasue someone can play fast does not make them better.

  • how u get the highest pitch sound at 6:00 - 6:04

  • What about Simplistiy?

  • @Ellinarkkari He sucks? He's the one who created the riff youcame on this vid to learn. You will NEVER be as good as him, listen to the solo of the night, see if you can play that.

  • this is by far the best lesson on youtube :) AWSOME SONG!!! :DDDD

  • This is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo cool, i'd like to play guitar like this ^)

  • @cascadorulx Lol once you go black you go deaf!

  • @Ellinarkkari which riff did he play different than the studio version??

  • This guy is definitely underrated... and that sucks!!!

  • "and it just goes like this, *plays the whole thing* ah uhh yeah thats about it!"

  • umm what guitar brand does he use they sound heavy

  • @psyckla5 its a washburn maya its his signature guitar but he doesnt use them anymoe he uses a schecter ultra DD and his equiptment is-Pickups:seymour duncan el diablo(bridge) seymour duncan '59 (neck) amp-randall 1086(his sig mod) if you have anymore questions just ask :)

  • @footballkidooooooooo what type of effects does he use?

  • @psyckla5 DigiTech XAS-DD The Weapon, DigiTech Whammy, DigiTech GSP1101, Dunlop Crybaby DCR-2SR Rack Wah, Voodoo Lab GCX MIDI Ground Control, Boss NS-2 Noise Supressor, Korg DTR-2000 Digital Tuner, Digitech Metal Master ;)

  • anyone else got a massive orgasm when Dan struck those 2 pinch harmonics?

  • He doesnt really "teach" u how to play the song, its more of the song slower so that people can play it by ear a lot easier

  • @lottabullets54 Yeah, I think if you had the tabs with you, this lesson would be a nice help -- as he shows you what to do with it. :)

  • @kk9man thats frickin low

  • Comment removed

  • i went deff listinen to this song on repeet

  • i love his style!

  • Fucking Best GUitarST HE MARKT LIFE ! DISTURBED FOR EVER!

  • man this guy is so sick

  • Dan is god

  • my last name is donegan ^_^

  • Woooah cant make my guitar sound like that not even close but awesome

  • Dan Donegan FTW

  • 19 people missed the "Like" Button=(

  • @moneybagz131lol no they just suck at playing guitar

  • what does he usualy play at

  • 19 haters disliked this vid, wat losers. they probably killed themselves cause they suck lol

  • i can do everything other than the part right after the bouncing high e string

  • @falco1407 Don't get discouraged. Grab yourself a metronome, and practice it slowly and build your speed on it up.

  • @ndonato2 only metronome i got is my friends recording studio one witch i only get to use twice a year :/

  • @falco1407 if you go to your local music store, you can pick up a digital metronome for anywhere between $15 and $40. I recommend the Korg MA-30.

  • @falco1407 lol That's what i thought when watching. I might have trouble with the solo Tag though x.x

  • Rock on and thanks for the lesson. and I recently figured out the natural harmonic, but then I found out that you rest your thumb on the string after you pick it it makes the high sounding sick crap.

  • i dont think he will go lower than that because disturbed is hard rock. if they went drop B then it is dwelling into the realm of heavy metal. disturbed walks a fine line between rock and metal which is fucking amazing

  • @goowy1256

the tuning doesn't really determine the genre of music man, i usually play in standard but i can get some pretty heavy riffs. i mean early metallica was pretty metal, but they used standard. not trying to be a dick or anything though

  • @SYNcustomWILLbeMINE oh i know i was just making a point that if he went drop B that would be borderline heavy metal especially the riffs that dan plays.

  • can someone tab this for me and send it to me please

  • @mbugl just search for it.

  • @mbugl

go to google and search disturbed inside the fire tabs and click on the 1st link

  • man how can i make it that the note in the 10th fret from the b -string does not make stupid sounds when tapping?

  • real good lesson from the pro himself :D, really like it! nice sound tho *-*

  • "this is a drop c tuning, this is the lowest i will go cause i will not go any lower than that"

    great explanation dan lol

  • @hailphire130 Haha, the first time I saw this I was just 5 days into playing guitar and I was very curious about the characteristics of drop tuning, and I was waiting for this technical explanation from Danny but all I got was "cuz I will not go any lower than that" xD

He actually explained it in an interview once, saying that drop tuning beyond C makes the strings less tense and thus loses a lot of the tone, which he doesn't like.

  • @hailphire130 strigns get too floppy and ur solos sound way out of tune imo....but he didnt feel like talking alot lol

  • @SirFightsalot he said its because after drop c, the sound gets kinda muddy

  • Funny, he moves his left arm so much when he plays. When I play this, I don't move at all during the prechorus/chorus.

  • Do you know why he plays it like it's easy? Because it IS easy. His riffs are somewhat catchy, but they are EASY!! I'm sure even Dan himself wonders how in the hell some of you people call him "The greatest guitarist in the world". Don't be ridiculous. His rhythm guitar work is bonehead easy.

  • Can anyone tell me what he's doing at 6:35-6:38?

  • Im getting his guitar soon Washburn DD61 Maya. Can't wait!!!!!!!!!! He is my freking Idol dan donegan forever!!!!!

  • if i was gay or girl i wuld secks him :)

  • You coulda fooled me with that comment haha

  • is he using the weapon pedal for this demo?

  • yeah

  • 0:43 Did I just hear Dan Donegan mess up?

  • I think so lol.

  • @guitaRb0i1 dude synester gates is a fuckin tool.

  • wish i was as good as him. dan donegan is the most amazing guitarist ever!!

  • he just plays it like its easy

  • this is my fav song on the indestructable album i also like haunted and the night.and what type of sound does disturbed use for the guitarist sounds?

  • Dan uses Digitech's The Weapon pedal, made just for him. The pedal is now discontinued and rare...try Ebay you can get one for around 120 dollars.

  • @BYSMA4th you can get them for cheaper than that. I got mine for like $70

  • Haha seriously? You think a multimillion band guitarist plays with a $120 pedal?

    Get serious.

  • @m0joGriffin

    It's happened before...

  • If you look at the catalog description of the weapon it says:

"Dan Donegan of the multi-platinum band Disturbed asked DigiTech to help him recreate his studio tones for his live performances. The result is The Weapon. "

Although you're right, it could be just advertising. I never thought of it in that way before =P.

  • @BYSMA4th

Check out the vid for The Night by Disturbed.

Do you see stacks of Digitech pedals or Randall heads? :P

I don't mean to be an ass or anything, but this stuff is 100% marketing.

You're better off just choosing your own stuff based on listening to it!!

    @Grazydyne

Yes top musicians use cheap pedals, but combined with hgih quality tube amps.

For instance Dava Navarro uses Boss ... and Marshall tube heads.

  • I didn't think of you as an ass. It's perfectly fine to point out truth, or evidence to suggest truth.

Yea I suppose it would make way more sense for him to use several pedals. For instance, he uses wah on many of his songs, and you can't switch between the master setting and the wah setting on The Weapon that quickly.

That being said, it's still a good buy for the average guy at 60 bucks . I feel like it's pretty close to the sound he produces, I also play a lot of Rammstein with it.

  • where was this video from?

  • a dvd from guitar world magazine

  • he's kinda sloppy in this vid but whatever disturbed is awesome.

  • dude you freaking ROCKKKKKKKKK! disturbed for ever

  • HELL YEAH!

  • @neonguitar90210 The reason he 'freaking ROCKKKKKKKKs' is because he is the real guy in the band! He looks like him, he has the same guitar and knows all about it all!!!

  • 6:35 what is that that technique??

  • pull offs

  • Its just on the high E string only right?

  • well it the d string its in drop C so it hold 8 then pull off 10 then pull of 12 then 10 on the 2 string get it?

  • Yeah, pull-offs. And it's the hardest part of the solo in my opinion. Notice how he slows up a little compared to the studio version. I'm the same way. My fucking hand won't move that fast.

  • @uberblazed421 hammer ons and pulloffs? LOL

  • this dude own tune me i think hes far the best trust me

  • Holy shit Dan is good. I can't even hardly play the first string. lol

  • perfect lesson. im slowly starting to play it. dan's the man.

  • he says drop c at the beginning dude

  • anyone know the tuning? drop c or d im thinking?

  • im amazed he wouldnt go down another half step to Drop B

  • he down picks that whole damn thing? geez lol why?

  • down picking makes it sound heavier thats why metallica only downpick

  • yea but not really, its only barely noticeable and if you exercise enough pick control no one can ever tell the difference

  • i only downpick unless its like a fast solo or something, i can pretty easily downpick this, i couldnt at first but i learned....

  • that applies mostly to when you're palm muting

other than that, it sounds like an excuse

  • no that's what i mean, alternate picking when palm muting, if you get the technique down well enough, sounds indistinguishable from downpicking all of it, and besides isn't it possible to get like tendonitis and bad stuff like that if you push your hand muscles too far?

  • @omegamuff1n No thats just from bad habits man pushing your muscles wont hurt you as long as you know when to stop and rest

  • oh hm ok then what kind of exercises will improve downpicking speed without tensing up like crazy, cuz that's what i have to do if i try to downpick this song lol it feels like my elbow's made of iron or somehting

  • Just stay loose man Pushing yourself is the only way but dont push yourself to far... Play master of Puppets man that's a staple of crazy down picking

  • i know i have to warm up for 20 minutes before i can play that without cramping

  • Personal preference, some people feel more comfortable down picking, it depends how you learn.

  • cuz its metal

  • i like it :)

  • I wanna learn Inside the Fire!

  • you just did!!!!!

  • Not that way lol!

Im trying to learn on a TAB from U.G

  • dan donegan is the reason i started palying guitar,my favorite guitarist

  • It's the same for me. In fact, I actually ordered a washburn maya dd60vrf (one of is signature models) today. It should be getting here next week some time. I cant fucking wait.

  • wish i had his pedal hi guitar sounds way better than mine

  • The pedals hard to find. You can look for it on ebay, but I kep getting outbid on it when I tried that. I managed to make some guy pay like $150 for it though. And then a few days later I got lucky and found a used one on a used music site for $70. I ordered it and got it a few days later in perfect working condition.

  • no hes just down strums those parts

  • dude.... holy shit that looks so complex... i wonde if it iw when i lern... hmm

  • i wish they had one of these for "remember" and "the night"

  • The Night actully isnt that hard to learn, I looked up tabs at UG to give me some guidelines. Then I watched danny play it & modified the way I played it.

  • FOR THE LOVE OF GOD u suck monkey balls he is awsome and way beter than you will ever be

  • I know totally! and by the way this is a person who you joke around with in civics class. im not gonna say my name cuz i dont wanna be stalked : )

  • lol monkey balls

  • Could anyone post a small lesson on how to tune to drop c? I just can't get it.

  • do you have a tunner or do you do it by ear?

  • umm i dont think that Dan would have any time to look at this video

  • what guitar world issue was this? when was it published? imma buy one.

  • sometime in 2008

  • Aug. 2008. You can get them on eBay still packaged with the vid. Just search for Dan Donegan and you will find it.

  • aight. thanks a lot. :D

  • He sucks? Lets see you down pick this mother fucker w/o killing your hand. I bet you cant. And according to your vids and favs, you like that shit from Incubis and Killswitch Engage. Compare their guitarists to Donegan and Donegan's riffs would kill them!!

  • awesome!!!

  • one of the greatest guitarists today

  • Indeed so

  • @conorf11 agreed.

  • @conorf11 nooooooooo go look up Jeff Loomis kid

  • i hate drop c cause of the tuning it back up

  • LOL me too

  • pedals being used?..

  • this guy's a freak, he plays everything with down-picking, i cant do that unless i try to amputate myself

  • that's metal dude^^

  • i think he wants some dynamics in his picking so it would sound more gritty and more attack.

  • The tunning sound on the guitar also depends on the string gauge the guitarrist uses. I remenber plenty of In Flames songs which are tuned to A and, in my mind, they sound way cool.

That as all to do with the guitarrist sensibility to the sound he/she wants to hear(and the gear they have concerning those tunnings, of course) :).

  • Dan Donegan God of Riffs!

  • oh wow i have that dvd with him in a guitar world magazine and better quality :p

  • for better quality attach this to the link:

    &fmt=18

it works at every video on youtube

  • Wow I tried it and it really worked :D

  • i like drop d, b, and a

  • 8,7,10 haha

  • I like how he says guitar

  • i agree with big tater under me. he says he wont go lower than drop c because all bands have they're own kind of sound and obviously he CAN go lower its just drop c or drop c# sound better with they're songs and the haunting messsage of them

anyways DISTURBED OWNS ALL OTHER BANDS ALIVE

  • I to don't think you should go down below drop d because the tone becomes completly shit drop c sharp is probaly the best because it gives a bright clear metal tone

  • that is does

  • depends on the guitar you have tbh... i have a yamaha and a bc rich and the bc rich sounds alive in drop c, as the tone and notes are nice an clear/ crisp, where as the yamaha sounds muffled and shit in drop c.. so just depends really i think on the guitar.

  • Im Impressed.. so much down picking

  • wow this guy is a lengend

  • YA GO DAN!

  • all of you talking shit about dan or disturbed mk, shyuum his tuning and playing is his own preference and style and if you think that he is any less fo a musician because if it you are just close minded asses

  • The reason he won't go lower than a Drop C is personal preference, and it's the main component of defining one's own sound. Whatever anyone else thinks doesn't really matter, as long as Dan is achieving his own sound and making a mark as a musician; and I don't think there are many who play guitar or like to listen to those who do who wouldn't say this is one uber-talented muthafucka right here!!

Anyway, all that to say DAN OWNS!!!

Best guitarist in rock today IMO, and my opinion rocks. ;-)

  • wow your the first person on this video who isn't just being an immature little cock sucker thenk you

  • Yep, indeed :)

  • @conorf11 .... don't know why people were/are being cocks.... but DAN IS THE SHIT!!! =)

  • Mk your fucking gay shut the fuck up no one asked your sory ass to come here and be a dick! this vid is for people trying to learn how the pros do it. Im sick of cocksucking imbred fucktards like you starting shit like this. NO ONE CARES WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY DICK HEAD!!!

  • Okay, before this gets any further.

Shy: There is such thing as artist preference. The reason he won't go lower might be because he doesn't like the sound of lower tunings. And just because a riff is simple doesn't necessarily mean it sucks. For example, Stillborn, Zakk Wylde, one of the best guitarists alive, but the song's main riff is probably the easiest thing I've ever played on my guitar. And I don't know why, but I think it just sounds cool.

mk: You might be going a little far. Chill out

  • I know dude but this guy misunderstood my comment and started to bash on me

  • i love the opening riff, it is the best part of any song by disturbed i can never get it out of my head

  • dan is a god

  • does he only down strum the solo tag

  • I can't believe you people listen to this music

I mean, I don't know this guy and I'm not judging him by his work, He might be a good hiden guitarrist who knows? But c'mon this are cheesy easy "riffs" those aren't even riffs.

If that's the lowest he goes with his tuning, he lacks of creativity
