That was a cool fusion between ballet and belly dance. Though it agree with a few on here in saying that it was more leg work than I would have liked from a belly dancer. That's my only small issue with Zoe Jakes as well. Too much kicking.
I think some people are being a little style-snobby about this. Without any regards to limiting stylistic labels I think it is a beautifully executed dance piece. =)
I've seen the Ballet-Belly dance fusion before. I think I saw this dancer actually. I think this is an inspired performance. I thin kit's a great mix of the two dances. I would not have thought that this music would have worked well but I see so much feeling from her in this performance. New respect for Sabah!
I love it when new fusions arrive! I think its wonderful that there are so many ways to approch one danceform. Fusions are only evidence that belly dance is a great artform!
so please ppl.. don't be an old granny about it, just do what you love to do and let other ppl be free to express bellydance in what ever way they wish:)
Um...as far as the ballet, WOW!!!! That is amazing. She is a great ballet dancer. But when it comes to belly dance, I didn't really see it come through. I think that the ballet overpowered it just a bit. That was great that she fused the two dance styles together, very creative. But I think that the ballet is just a distraction from what she is actually trying to display, which is belly dancing. Great ballet though!
I like that she did something different but the problem is I looked at her feet more than anything else. The music was so traditional I only think if you do something with fusion the music needs to match a little better. Just a personal opinion.....but for me just I just like belly dance.
@sweetladyc13 the same here. I felt it hurst to walk on her toes. Plus I think while doing so she can not have enough balance to do good hip mouvements. her hip mouvments are kinda weak. I do not like this mix. I think she could have done a much better job by mixing the 2 without making it so obvious. it looks here like water and oil in the same container.
I've seen a few others attempt to fuse pointe ballet and belly dance to disasterous effect - a dance that did neither style any justice. THIS, however, is really neat. It's interesting and beautiful (I'd say it's more ballet than belly dance if we;re being technical, but it's still lovely!)
I'm not one for fusing raqs sharki with other style but I enjoyed watching this piece. Its not easy fusing such different styles of the rigid ballet stance and the fluidity of oriental dance. well done on the effort. I love 3.35 onwards especially.
The song is called "Lissa Fakkir," (Don't You Remember) although I don't know where this version comes from it's an original Oum Khalsoum piece and you can find it on several bellydance cds.
Phenomenal fusion of ballet and bellydance - so unique, so sultry, and so incredibly enjoyable. Never seen anything quite like it. Thank you for posting.
it's pretty, but I think she'd bellydance way better if she didn't do so much ballet. Hear me out, some parts where she mixed were gorgeous, but some parts made me think 'ummmm...yeeeaaahhh, oooookay...'
I take ballet and bellydance classes, and i think both are wonderful, but sometimes, they just aren't meant to mix...
I'm not sure how I feel about this. Having done both ballet/point and belly dance I understand how they can work together but also just how different they are. Although I always have said that choochoo shimmy's are retarded borre's :p
...Choose some other song! a modern one, there are many contemporary authors who create oriental fusion music such as the great Mario Kirlis for example, she can do her Bellet stuff with several songs of him and it will match far better. Let the oriental music to be danced like it should be, for once and for all!
That is pure occidentalism, it has nothing to do with Middle Eastern Dance! my eyes hurts to see how americans (or some others) do what they wants with a culture that doesn't belong to them, is she auditioning for "Cirque du Soleil" or something?, what more are they going to do!, Bellydancing in the tightrope?. If they want to make fusion, perfect!, it's ok, but do not do it with Classical Egyptian music that there is only one way to dance it: THE EGYPTIAN ONE!...
She's great, however, from my point of view, spining in releve pase with point shoes and arms in first position does not match bellydancing at all. It looks more like a ballet show to me
Great music, great costume, great choreography, beautiful dancer. This is fusion at its best- not even the most stringent of belly police could complain.
My stupid lingering concussion,I forgot it wasn't my video, and made a comment like it was my video yesterday ,I seen Sabah, and went to her site and found out about the Ballet and the Iceland performance ,I wish she did it where I saw her but the floor wasn't flat and smooth. She's amazing
My stupid computer doesn't always tell me when someone post's a comment, that was a cool fusion, she's also has a nice personality and she's fun joking with.

She certainly has good technique, but I personally find this classical ballet-belly dance fusion sort of bizarre. Just an opinion.

I think it was nice. For me it was a little too much ballet and not enough belly dance- but pretty to watch, nonetheless.
