Doesn't leave burn marks because the amount of material is so small.  Just leaves some powdery residue which wipes off easily with water, no visible trace remains.

You're right it's a firesteel, I use the cheap one from DealExtreme they only cost a few bucks each. Same material as the 'flint' in a cigarette lighter, everyone (except perhaps scouts and hikers) knows it as flint which is why I called it that.
