Beautiful piece, but there's so much more that even young choirs like this one can do with it. Generally, the singers are competing with each other, and that creates problems with volume/balance and with unification of tone. The vowels across the board could be so much taller, deeper, less abrasive, and thus more unified.. and don't let the tempo get out of hand.. once that stuff is unified, the subtleties and real beauty of the piece will come out to the audience.
New York is known for our less then perfect vowels so that that's better then a good load of choirs with high school students in it. Especially where I'm from, my choir teacher gets on our case all the time for singing our vowels wrong and very 'New York'.
Not to mention they had two days to learn the piece.
i totally agree. my chamber choir is doing this now and there is so much that can be done to make this song amazing. Its very good for only practicing 2 days on it. Being that it was counties im alittle surprised tho that it wasnt better. in order to be in counties u have to be able to read music. this was good tho.
lol, everyone here could read music. it's just that we had many other songs to prepare along with this, so of course this didn't get total undivided attention.
ok that makes sense. dnt get me wrong this is good. i just wish they gave things like counties more time to learn the songs so they can all be equally as amazing.
I was just wondering if this isn't a bit slow? It seemed like they were singing the beginning in a very disconected way to me. I liked it though, just wondering what you thought.
Generally, it's too slow for this group, but the director doesn't stick to that tempo - I say choose one and don't let it get out of hand. If it's too slow, it reveals some issues with tone/blend/etc. Great work for 2 rehearsals though!
horrable balance a few note issues. i dont think it wsa great. thats jst me cuz im critical when it comes to choirs. U should see me criticizing myself. its not pretty but i did think there was realy distinct dynamic changes and good diction. Dont get me wrong. its not atrocious. but i think you guys could have done ALOT better. weve got a 12 prt acapella at my skewl that did this AMAZINGLY a while ago. b4 i got a chance to sing w them of corse.
This is really bad you lack emotion, your vowels are spread and cause you to go flat on many parts, watch this! Not to mention your balance is terrible, i cannot hear the chords in the song because your choir did not listen to each section. My high school choir did this song,we are from texas, and i hate to burst your buble but its not a southern thing to have shorter vowels, its a bad singer thing!, check out my choir's version ! (Lubbock High School Choir, search for it!)
wow y'all did this a LOT slower and louder (in the beginning) than we're doing it now. i think y'alls vowels could definitely be taller, but its a very very pretty tone!
Thanks. I definitely agree, but I think had we made the vowels even rounder and "taller" as you suggested we would have lost the diction. This is something many Southern choirs often suffer from and therefore get a more "hooty" sound, and we definitely tried staying away from it. Thanks for the input though!
umm my choir is from georgia and we'e a high school choir and it wasnt an all districtchoir this was my high school choir m freshman year we sang this and did much better than this group of kids
yeah i know i wish i had the recording but imean yall arent bad by any means but dont say tht choirs from the south make a "hooty" sound whe u havent heard us all
stereotypically you guys do. last year my choir competed in Tennessee and we couldn't understand any one choir we heard. Their blend was amazing but their diction was atrocious.
well northern ppl have an accent also a good choir trys to sing with no accent period our choir director told us tht if ur listening to a good choir then it doesnt matter where ur from u can understand exactly what they r saying, the choir u hear wasnt good it wasnt bcuz they r from the south bcuz thre r some northern choirs who sing with tht northern accent and its not bcuz they r from the north its bcuz they arent good and they have not been taught to sing correctly
woah woah woah, you need to get your story straight. alls I said was that you can't understand what most southern choirs are singing, because the dicition is terrible. not all, but most. the tone and blend is usually (but again, it depends on the choir) fantastic and very whole.
as for northern choirs, yes, most of the time we would come off a bit nasal to you guys, but our dicition is almost always amazing (generally speaking of course, not for every choir). so you see, it's two extremes that have what the other wants. neither is better than the other, and please don't think because you're from the south you are, or because im from the north i'm not. and like i said, if you don't like this, show me you can do better.
Yes! I finally find a choir who does it as good as we do. A lot of the time, the stuff I hear from this is horribly bright and terribly out of tune. But this was pretty good. It moves and doesn't stay at one speed. Vowels could be a bit darker and there could be come better diction, but that's the best one I've heard on Youtube.
i sang that my senior year for UIL. i fell in love with this song, i've said since then that it would be the song i get married to. i'd love it to be done by a choir, more specifically some of my old choir friends...but that'd be difficult to pull off.
My best friend just died, and the small ensemble that I'm in at my church is singing this at his funeral on tuesday... it makes me cry every time I sing it or listen to it.
this song is more like a chamber choir style. there should be less of a bright broadway type style here. more smooth and light. it seemed a bit rushed as well.
I absolutly love this song, Our jass chorus sang this on May 24th. I think this song should go with The Phantom of the Opera, its that amazing and truly beautiful.
Great job. My high school choir just sang an SSAA arrangement of this at 2 festivals. I'm a 2nd soprano so I'm always stuck in the middle of the dissonance. The last chord is middle C, G, 2nd sop splits to high C and D, and 1st sop on E. I'm singing the high D. And there's only 13 people in our ensemble. Quite a difficult song. Kudos for doing this.
I think that some of the parts that were done at a faster tempo caused some of the lyrical expressiveness to vanish. And the tone is not dark--the vowels are very bright (tenors especially) and spread. This song was made for voices to be wrapped around the chords and the words...I'm sorry to hear it didn't reach it's potential.
OMG! I remember singing this in High School!!! It's a beautiful song- thanks for having this song on here it brings back so many memories for me
