The first time I played this I thought "Am I controlling a statue?". The way Hogan slams down on the mat he sounds like he weighs a couple thousand pounds. Not to mention the real slow movement.
I remember playing this back in the days when i was a little kid I Always Picked Andrea The Giant and always Picked The Million Dollar man for my opponent and I always beat him he was so easy. I couldn't beat the other Wrestlers.
Still not as hard as trying to beat WCW Master in WCW for NES. That's the hardest wrestling game I've ever played, although I did beat WCW Master once.
i remember playing my friend over at his house on this game, he was andre and i was hogan and in front of his mom and aunt i pinned him. victory at such a young age ;D
i wanted to like this game SO bad just because it was WWF and had hogan, but god was it such a terrible game. WCW, Tecmo Wrestling, and Pro Wrestling were a billion times better
That would have been funny if your graduation would have used this one from the 8 bit game with all the punching and kicking sounds in the background.
A lot of people consider Pro Wrestling (the Nintendo-made wrestling game) and Tecmo World Wrestling the best wrestling games on the NES because they have gameplay that was borrowed by Spike, makers of the Fire Pro Wrestling games, which are themselves extremely popular.
wow! I can remember playing this at my cousins house one night, Many many years ago. My cousin was a spoiled shit, And would never let me play for extended amounts of time, As i became hooked. So I waited until he fell asleep, And played for HOURS all through the night! Seeing Bam Bam - Who was my favorite at the time, Makes me laugh. I always thought they looked kinda weird how they marched around the ring! XD! awesome upload!!!
The NES console was in my older brother's room and he always had dibs on playing whenever he was at home. Fortunately, he would let me play while he was sleeping as long as I kept the volume muted. I can remember being 9 years old and playing Ninja Gaiden at night while he was sleeping.
Eventually, he moved out and I claimed the console as my own. For a large part of my childhood, the NES was my personal babysitter.
I definitely agree with you that Bam Bam was the coolest character.
I always liked Honky's gimmick but he wasn't a very good wrestler. His move-set was severely limited.
He could sell hits pretty well and his mic skills were ok, but I can't understand why McMahon let him be Intercontinental champ for 64 straight weeks. The Million Dollar Man and Jake The Snake should have had title runs during this time.
I wasn't saying that Jake or Dibiase should have feuded with Honky Tonk Man. Just that both of them should have been an IC champ at one point.
I disagree with your thoughts on Dibiase. Wrestlers such as Macho Man and Ultimate Warrior both had runs as IC champ and World champ. It wasn't as if the IC belt was reserved for a certain type of wrestler.
Of course they were, because the IC title back then was a stepping stone to the World Title. It was for midcarders to get them over before heading for the main event.
And, at the time HTM held the IC title, DiBiase was already in the hunt for the World Title. But I see your point: Roberts or DiBiase could have held the IC title at any point prior, or even after.
Well growing up watching wrestlers such as Mr Perfect and Roddy Piper go back and forth between competing for the IC and World titles just made me think that there wasn't THAT big of a difference between them.
In fact, for a few years in the WWF, it seemed as if the IC, World, and Tag Team titles were pretty much all on the same level.
Macho Man started off competing for the World title in 1985 but was IC in '87 and then World champ in '89.
once again props to you. i got this steaming pile monkey crap on my 7th or 8th birthday and back then i absoultly loved it!(still cant figure out why) tha fact you played through the tournament mode without flinging your computer or NES across the room has earned you 5 stars from me!
I imagine I was close to the same age when I first played this game.
I got bored with it quite quickly, though, as I beat it rather easily.
The only wrestler that really frustrated me was Andre The Giant. His endurance, strength, and surprising quickness were a triangle of cheapness that served as quite a roadblock at first.
Back in these days, I never really contemplated throwing my console or controller out of anger. I was so determined and introverted that it wasn't a problem.
ya i HATED fighting Andre! but back then this was one of the only wrestling games out their. even to day it isnt much better since you only have SVR and now TNA. my favorite wrestling games are No Mercy(big suprise huh?) Power Move Prowrestling and Day Of Reconing 2.
Once I discovered the "Nightmare Elbow", Andre fell just as easily as the rest.
The only wrestling games I play today are:
1. Pro Wrestling (NES)
2. WCW World Championship Wrestling (NES)
3. WWF WrestleFest (Arcade)
If any of the game companies decided to combine everything I love in those three games into one game on a modern console, then I would definitely play it.
I didn't like any of the Super NES, N64, or next gen console wrestling games.
does anyone else realize that the background song playing during the first match is strikeforce's theme song?

Player who is masochist choose Ted DiBiase as a player.
It's not hard to lose first fight with Bam Bam Bigelow.
If anybody choose Hulk, is easier to win tournament.
ModaNaNK 1 year ago
You're right. However, it can still easily be considered masochistic just to play this game.
Even with Hogan, it is still very tough to win.

Don't listen to the haters. This game was THE only wrestling game for the NES.
The rest were c#$p. And, yes, it's mostly for nostalgig reasons. Especially the music. You have to admit it's better than many games nowadays.

thats a pretty snazzy 8-bit version of Honky Tonk's theme

bubufubu 3 years ago
Yeah, Jake Roberts would have been a good foil for Honky. HTM would easily sell the whole "I'm afraid of snakes" bit.
DiBiase not so much, because he was always a contender for Hogan's World Heavyweight Title, the IC belt would have been a step down.
You have to keep in mind that pretty much nobody back then (save Curt Hennig and DiBiase) was a good worker. :)
Now imagine if Beefcake hadn't been hurt both of the times he was scheduled to win the IC belt. :)
