  • love the knife is a good one

  • Saw your review, just bought one off Amazon. Thank you.

  • i just got mine & for $30 you cant go wrong, if i didnt know the price id pay $50 no problem, thanks for the review

  • @cbr600rrturbo I actually saw one at my local knife store for $80. Got one off Amazon for $35.

  • This or the Spderco Tenacious

  • @Mortke im trying to decide the same thing. i love spyderco, but these are both good for the cost

  • @BurntWaflles I think I might get the rat it looks like it will take more of a beating

  • @Mortke i agree, but i feel like the spyderco has the better blade shape. but ive always gotten spyderco's. ive always been impressed but i think i'll switch it up and try this. im still going with spyderco for my more expensive knives though

  • @Mortke Or the Benchmade Griptillian, Kershaw Blur, Sog Flash 2, and then some...

  • my tenacious got me to :(

  • is this knife spring assisted???

  • @usmc11able no, that isthe funny thing

  • @mafiajimmy yea no doubt all the reviews ive seen they can deploy this knife so damn fast, i was woundering cause im buying one for my survival kit and i dont want a spring assisted knife in it

  • @usmc11able you can open it slow or flick it faster than a car because of the design and the washers. that's sweet thing about it. Best knife I have. I promise you, you wont regret.

  • @mafiajimmy good to know, thanks alot!, and is it still easily found in stores??? cause i was watching nutnfancys review on it and he said he didnt know if it was discontuinued or not

  • @usmc11able on budk.com they have a few left in satin finish and combo edge

  • @Vinny369 right on! thanks man!

  • just got the desert tan with the black blade!! its amazing. get one if ya dont/

  • i found these is alot off different colors on knifeworks(: in stock too.

  • @themegajosh09 i got a couple engraved from them

  • dont baton with any folder.

  • people have been telling me that the blade shape on these are not good for stabbing, but i don't know i think they actually might work for stabbing. does anybody know if this is a good knife for self defense situatuion and piercing ?

something about this knife just makes me wanna buy it,i might get a few of them.

  • excellent, now I can get one.

  • Are they assisted?

  • @BRAWLERBOY66 Nope, phosphor bronze bushings + liner lock makes a pretty quick opening knife!

  • DO NOT TRY BATONNING WITH THESE KNIVES. break very easily. suck. that is all

  • @waxmastawes Well... it is a folding knife.

  • @waxmastawes no shit... its a folding knife with a liner lock, doesnt take an eistein to figure that out, anyone whos batoning is going to be using a fixed blade

  • this is one of my favorite knives. I came back to this vid every so often just for a good feeling :)

  • fantastic knife; i carry the plain blade verson and a Cold Steel Recon1 as my two EDC knives for over four years now. *edit* i've only had the recon 1 for four years, the rat1 is new to me but still fantastic and proven in my book

  • fantastic knife; i carry the plain blade verson and a Cold Steel Recon1 as my two EDC knives for over four years now.

  • mines in the mail. you do nice clear, practical reviews and talk to the points for which everyone whos interested this knife will be interested to hear. no talk about batoning through 2x4's or fending of bears. keep up the good work

  • in my experience the rat holds and edge way better then the tenacious. but they are both such a great value for so many diff reasons

  • who would trade these?

  • Hey cutlerylover, I was wondering if you could do a knife review on Stilleto knives, and Frost cutlery knives. Thnk you. :)

  • which do you prefer, the tenacious or this knife?

  • If you did'nt know the handles are not made out of G-10, they advertise them G-10 but they are not. Their made out of a different material.

  • Rat 1 vs. kershaw Chill? Would be great to see

  • what is better the rat 1 or spyderco tenacious

  • I know I want the plain edge but I cant decide which to go for, coated or satin. Which do would you suggest?

  • its a japanese made medium-carbon, high chromium stainless steel blade

  • @TheKillerman97 any knife will rust eventually, u jus gotta take care of them

  • I just cut my finger while oiling them and spreading the oil over the blade... it happened just like that~! SHARP ~!!!

  • Does it rust? Please answer, nutnfancy says it will.

  • @TheKillerman97 well if nutnfancy says so then it will! Lol /sarcasm. They're AUS8 steel, mid-grade steel.. If you take care of it every once in a while clean it up put some oil on it it'll be fine.

  • I just ordered my Rat 1 today based on your review and a video by a soldier who used it during his tour in Afghanistan. Thanks for the video man, I subbed!

  • I can't believe what they charge for these and the Tenacious-ish knives. Something to be said about stuff made overseas from a consumer stand point.

  • You can still find these on KnifeCenter and other websites for around $25 to $40. Just google in and click the shopping tab to find the best deal. Taiwan products are a lot better than products that come from China. I personally boycott anything from China if I can simply because I don't like their trading tactics and how they mess with their currency all the time for trading benefit. Support Taiwanese products because they do good business and make good products.

  • Awesome knife,I'm getting ASAP.

  • awesome review. i can't wait to pick one of these up

  • Thanks for the review, just picked one of these up. this is one of my favorite cheaper knives second to the tenacious. but for 30 bucks this thing is amazing

  • hey Jeff. Good stuff keep it up. What would you choos these or a syderco Tenacious?

  • Nice review Jeff. I like how you don't care about the weight really much, unlike Nutnfancy. I mean, he's a good reviewer and all but he wants every knife of his to be less than 3,5 4 ounces. Thumbs up for you!

  • would this make a good knife for a survival kit??

  • @krazy4knives

A fixed blade would be more reliable and sturdier.

  • @zanuha obviously! i mean for a secondary, for like one of those big-ass Sucrets tins. i have a CS trailmaster as a main survival knife. lol.

  • Rat 1 vs. Tenacious???

  • @jjay623 Get them both. They're both awesome and inexpensive.

  • this is on ontarios web site!!

  • Jeff, I have had two RAT-1's and they are both impossible to open with my thumb and difficult to close. Ontario just sent me my second one after I complained about the first one and it is still difficult to open. I have no trouble opening other knives with a flick of my thumb. I have tried lossening the pivot screw with no luck. I can't believe how easy everyone else on YouTube can deploy this knife. Any thoughts? Thanks.

  • i got the rat1 and i luv it. plain edge satin finish. the blade is an adequate size i dont like knives smaller than this, because i just need that much length to slice thru objects generally speaking. my god the blade sooo sharp!

  • Thank you very much for the review, it really helped me to make a decision for this knife. Ive just ordered it.

    Well done.

  • This verses Spyderco Tenacious...

  • Where can you buy a scale like that? Also I was wondering do you buy most you're knives from knifecenter? (Obviously not this knife I know, just curious.)

  • what does cultery

  • @magicdevil97 How do i shot web?

  • dude every time u flik them open it looks like there spring assisted and u should get a bucklite MAX small mediem or large i got the mediem yesterday for 20$

  • Great review. Thanks!

  • its lubed, its tight, and its ready to go...hell yeah

  • @c0nsci0usness giggidy

  • damn, you're fast with those rats. mine is so tight locking and it rips my thumb apart when i open it. i just got it at knife works.com for only 27 bucks. This knife RULES!

  • I just ordered one after watching this video. I've been carrying a Buck 110...and while I love this knife...it was time for a new carry.

  • @ROFLpwnedvideos can you open the buck 110 with one hand?

  • @TH3aznEmperor

    Negative. You really can't.

  • hey Jeff awesome review just got mine today and the blade is hard to open... wish it opend like yours what do you think bro!!

  • the best rat-1 review on youtube...

  • I completely took off the clip since I was not planning on carrying them as it is too heavy anyway. It stays in my car. Without the clip. its much better to fit in my hand as well. For pocket carry, I like Spyderco Delica 4. or somewhere around that size / weight.

  • I picked up the black blade version and love it. I edc it and it take a beating day in and day out. In fact, I like it so much that I just got the satin blade version today. Just gonna have to adjust the pivot screw and lube the blade a little so that I can flick it open one handed. These knives absolutely cannot be beaten when it comes to price. Excellent reviews CL, keep em coming.

  • You rock, bro!

  • I really love ALL your videos and your friendly pleasant voice makes easy to watch unlike some other reviewers with crazy loud music back ground or non-sense talks, etc.

  • I am an U.S made dude! I have this knife ,and it is an amazing tool!

  • nobody seems to say anything about some of the knifes that are just tight, so the deployment is a real pain(literally)

  • do you think these knives will have collector value later on?

i remember from when i was a kid collecting comic books that any variaties

of items that are very popular later turn out to have high collecor value.

now i herd something about some kind of controversy over the use of the RAT

label, and RAT cutlery changing its name to ESEE.

do you think they will change the stamps on these kives or anything like that?

  • got mine in the mail today the one thing wrong with was the clip arrived in left hand tip down wtf who is left handed and prefers tip down

  • Ordered one today - plain edge, satin finish.

I like your use of the magnifying glass to show details.

    Great vid!

  • I Just Ordered One,Man I think I'm Gonna Love It !!!

  • Why buy an assisted or auto when this knife opens this quickly? Great knife, just got the plain edge satin finish. Love it! Autos are overrated and over priced!

  • if anyone wants these go to google click shopping and it will bring up the results. just done it all the rat1 knives are around 25-35 dollers.

  • hey jefff i have been looking around for a knife and i looked at ur videos

and the 2 knives that caught my eye were the rat cutlery izula and this knife

    which one do you recommend??

  • These knives are one of the best values out there now...but they are out of production now, so the clock ticks on the deals....has to do with a law suit between RAT and Ontario over naming rights. Going for 20-24 bucks now...I have 5, maybe give a couple away as xmas gifts.

  • Fantastic knife. I work for a knife retailer and I literally tried out about 50 different knives, mostly assisted and some autos before settling on this one. Even though it's not assisted, the mechanism is so smooth to open. Great EDC.

  • hey where do you trade knifes at?

  • man this knife looks very good!

  • enjoyed the vid, I agree with you on the tenacious, one of my favorite knives, and I think what makes it so good is the price and what you get.

  • flavor! lol

  • I just got this knife in the mail tonight. WOW this thing is sharp! To the point that I don't even want to use it. I know I'll never be able to get it that sharp again :( I suck with a flat stone.

  • spyderco ta-wat?

  • cool knife

  • which do you like better, these or the crkt lake 111?

  • 2 totaly different knives, but I prefer these...

  • Hey man I love you reviews, can you try to review the Benchmade 9052 Tanto???

  • discontinued sometime last year... I own 2 of them a black pain edge and a satin plain edge

    and i love them

  • duuuuuuuuuuude teach us how you open the knife that freaking fast ! lol i'd show this tricks to my mates and they'd be like :O

  • it opens automatically, theres all different knives that open like that

  • this knife is not an auto or an assisted knife, itsw just a regular manial folder...

  • but duuuuuuuuuuuuuude teach us how you open it like that lol

  • I already have a video on that, search cutlerylover flick...

  • *Manual

  • I had a Typo, whats new, lol

  • I'm a Grammar Nazi. That's what's new.

  • lol, then stick around there is alot of things that need pointing out on my channel, haha I typoe way too fast and have too many questiosn to respond to, and dont care much about typos...sorry

  • Yeah, I used to be like that but I have gotten really OCD about it.

  • damn than how do you open it so fast?

  • Im just use to using folders...I ahve a video on how to flick folders open fast, just search cutlerylover flick..

  • i love the way you open these knives.. i just cant seem to get the hang of flipping them out so fast...

  • A really good trick for opening manual folders open fast is to put your thumbnail against the side of the thumbstud and just flick up. If you do it with a little wrist action it sounds amazing.

  • Surgical steel is just a type of stainless steel used for surgical instruments, temporary implants, body piercing and food...it is fairly corrosion resistant, but its main property is that it can be sterilized and remain sterile. Other metals or steels can release contaminents. It's very common. I would't expect to see it used by any knifemaker I'm interested in. Mainly no-name pos knives are branded "surgical steel"

  • dude you make all your knives look like assisted openers

  • Just got the plan edge satin finish on ebay for 29.99+freeshiping. Also the paraframe mini is a great knife holds a edge great and for under $20 its a good deal. ps great review jeff!!!

  • I have one of each both with the combo edge. The black coating rub off the black after about 4 weeks of of using it. The blades are awsome and they keep a very nice razor edge. ebay is the best place I know to get them from for less than 30 bucks.

  • So, Jeff, I don't know much about different grades of steel, I sometimes know if steel is decent, but how is surgical steel? I heard it was really good, but youtube is one of the worst places to gather information ever.

Also, could you do a review on the Gerber Paraframe mini? I can't find a decent review anywhere on youtube and it's really cheap on yourcornerstore.

  • The Gerber Paraframe sucks. It's a bitch and a half to deploy. I have owned an original Gerber and a knock off and turns out the knock off was better overall. If you want a cheap knife go for a Boker Plus, a Byrd or a Benchmade Red class.

  • I don't know what the deal is with yours, but my friend has the Paraframe and it's almost too easy to open. I don't want the same exact knife as him, so I was either looking into the Paraframe mini or Powerframe, leaning more towards the powerframe though.

  • I had one but after using it the blade got scratced and eventually cracked and broke in half. I guess i've just never had a Gerber I like. The only one that I don't mind is the FAST. I have a mini one that I got for like $13

  • For a cheap knife I'm now looking into the Gerber Evo or the CRKT M16 EDC. I'd prefer the M16 due to it's tanto point, but other than that they're the same exact knife for the same exact price.

  • Get a SOG Flash II or a Trident Tanto. They are much better knives.

  • I'll look into them. I just like collecting knives, so I care more about price and looks than functionality. I like the flipper on the Evo and M16 as well.

  • Check out the Kershaw Skyline. It comes in Damascus and it looks sweeeeet.

  • Gerber Paraframe is a sorry excuse for a knife. I can see you don't know much about knives.

  • Just because I like a knife that you don't? Or maybe it's because i can deal with lower quality stuff.

  • Good vid. I have a couple of these knives and they really are quite good. The jimping does flat out suck. LIke Jeff, I'm not totally into jimping. I like it if the knife has a thumb ramp; I don't if the knife doesn't.

  • Just like to point out that jimping and filework are not the same thing. Jimping is made by a machine while filework is an art done by hand; to confuse the too negates the craftesmanship and effort a knifemaker exhibits by opting for filework over jimping.

  • And a knife is a tool used for cutting.

  • Jeff... speaking of the jimping? lol .. what ever you call it .. the file work.. its to prevent a forward slide of the hand.. like the finger cut out .. its an extra helper... when done right.. lets say you stab something.. you hit something hard wood bone.. what have you .. your hand slips forward.. you slice your pointer and middle fingers.... not so nice eh?

  • Hey nice review CL. You and Nutnfancy are polar opposites when it comes to weight and jimping. That's what I like about being subscribed to both of you guys and getting two different valid points of view. Thanks man.

  • Great knife i use it for my edc... its a steal!! for the price..

  • good job jeff

  • as my gf says more lube the better lol

  • your gf sounds like a classy lady.

  • Great review as usual Jeff. Reminded me a little to much of Nutnfancy tho, dont go losing your personality on us!

  • I believe these went out of production around late 2008...

  • as always, a very enjoyable review

    keep it up Big Guy

  • is that a fat joke lol

  • When do you think you will be getting a new gun to do a review on? Or uploading one of your gun video's in general?

  • Would you be interested in trading one of these for a SOG flash II( I only cut paracord with it for like 3 days then decided to keep it for trades) anyway 5 stars

  • This is my favorite knife I own.

  • Good review Jeff, I just got one of these this week and I do like it. Seems well made and designed. Hats off to Ontario for keeping the price low.

  • Interesting that your Rat 1 has rounded jimping. Mine has excellent sharp jimping. I bought mine new so I wonder if the former owner smoothed it out on your Rat 1? Now mine also does not come out quickly at all. Maybe I need to break mine in better or adjust the torx screw. The other thing I don't like is how difficult the lilner lock is to access. Other than that I really like it. Nice sharp knife and solidly built. Thanks for the reviews!

  • Just got my Rat1 back out and the jimping looks just like yours, but for whatever reason, my thumb locks in well on it. I also adjusted the torx pivot screw and put the pocket clip to tip up and the knife comes out extremely fast now. It just needed a little adjustment. Still love the knife....now it is even better. I may move it to my edc blade with the adjustments.

  • ik have the black plain version, AWSOME!!

  • Gotta love a well built knife that is cheap! I might have to pick up a couple of em if I can find em around locally, maybe I will get one online eventually.

  • What about his pretty man hands?

  • Same reason exactly for me.lol he's a lot calmer.

  • It seems like there are a lot of knives that Ontario Makes that they dont put on their website.

  • Cutlery Lover has good knowledge and opinions. I agree this knife looks awesome. But AUS8 is to soft. Yes, it sharpens easy but edge retention is horrible. I can put a razor edge on AUS8, cut up 4 cardboard boxes and there is noticeable degradation. Too bad knife makers do not offer two versions of these wonderfully designed knives. AUS8 for the economically minded and an optional "better" steel for others.

  • Yeah, I wish this knife came in S30V or at least VG-10 steel.

  • 7:22 that looked so much like my 5 dollar china knife that ended up falling behind my closet a long time ago...

  • I have had one of these for two years and you can not kill it, it is a great knife, but that coating is horrible with real use...lol mine is now black and silver, but you can tell I actually use it, they are very good for skinning deer too, I have skint atleast 6 or more with it since I got it.

  • yesssssssssss a knife review.... good job dude

  • i'd sure like one of those! :p

it'd go well with my rat 5

  • i bought 5 of them one to use and 0ne of each to collect

  • it really looks like it was assisted opening

  • its just a manula folder, flickign mknives out is just in the technique...I have a video on it posted already if your interested...

  • i couldn't find that vid jeff, could you post a link?

  • hehe in our country you can get rat-1 for 130€...

  • LOL i know it ... in US you buy things under it retail price and in Europe its like 100% more of retail. In Poland these knife cost 199PLN that not even close to 20$

  • Just found one of these bad-boys for £35 (black plain edge). Ordered it. Thanks Jeff.

  • The tenacious is such a great knife that it really gives all other knives under $40 a run for their money.

  • yeah knives!!!

  • 5/5 jeff

  • Comment removed

  • I've actually batoned with my RAT 1 and it still only has a very small amount of side to side play. Absolutely wonderful knives, especially for the price.

  • Side to side play can be minimized by tightening the pivot screw.

  • I know. the amount it has though is so minimal I can barely tell it's even there, so I haven't bothered.

  • Spyderco always gets their jimping right.

  • they surely do, all spyderco jimping i have seen is excellent

i've got some byrd knives where the jimping is too shallow to be effective though. some byrds are effectively jimped and some are not
