Vang Vieng is one of the most depressing places I have ever been in my travels around Asia. Beautiful countryside, unique culture, and right in the middle of the mountains a tiny little town filled with 2000 drunk, obnoxious Western tourists acting like assholes.
The countryside around Van Vieng is beautiful. But the town is full of tourists behaving like idiots who show no respect for Laos culture and think because they're white they can behave anyway they like. Fortunately most of these "tourists" go from a "full moon party" in Thailand straight to Van Vieng then go back again. That's their cultural experience of Laos! If you want the real Lao experience and you like drinking, meet up with some locals and drink rice wine with them they are so friendly

Who cares? They have adapted their village to fit the demand that they recognized, which is capitalism at it's best. Few people know that Laos is actually one of 5 communist countries still in existence today, and personally I think the emergence of Vang Vieng as the sort of "Las Vegas" of Asia is a great thing for the country. The fact that laws and restrictions are very relaxed and the dangers that come with that MAKE it the place it is...take that away and it's just another poor village.

I've been to Vang Vieng tons of times (lived in Thailand the past 10 years) and this documentary actually paints a pretty accurate picture of the tubing scene. I especially like the point that everyone thinks what they're doing is so original and random when in fact the overwhelming majority of the "tubing set" pretty much spend their whole holiday clinging to each other. Only criticism is the commentary is hard to hear. Please remake it and get the audio mix right.

Travelled through Laos in '04. Vang Vieng was starting to get a reputation as a party town, & Pai in Northern Thai was THE place to go. Spent 4 months living in Pai & became good friends with many of the locals - even a few cops who I played pool with in 'Bee Bop.' I went back last year ('10 / '11), & can honestly say that both towns have been fucking destroyed, & the vast majority of local people have not seen any increase in their standard of living. Youth is a poor excuse for ignorance.
it's an awesome place. the locals know how to accommodate. and you can see laos in any form of way that you want. thats what's so beautiful about it. i did everything there, from visiting templates, to tubing and getting shitfaced in vang vieng, to visiting and hiking thru the hmong villages.

Was there a few weeks ago and there were ,ore locals in some of the bars than backpackers. There's a time to see temples , beaches and lovely places and a time for a party. Do feel sorry for the locals if they didn't want them there they wouldn't be. They don't fuck about when it comes down to it, plus they are earning a bomb. Was in Vang Vieng a few months ago, sure the tubing was fun but it did have a bitter after taste for me. I don't blame them but the place has become greedy, catering purely for the party backpackers cash. I didn't feel any of that great Laoatian soul in the place and the locals despise the tourists mearley putting on a sharade to draw the punters in. It's a real shame as this is such an amazing country and I really hope it doesn't turn into another Thailand type place.
I spent six months travelling around Asia before studying for my undergraduate degree, so believe me, I know about this kind of thing. Laos is as traditional as ever. Just open your eyes and accept that change happens.

@rudedogii ahh no problem, I just had quite a lot of people claiming I was travelling off 'daddys wallet' while I was travelling around Asia, seeing as I was 18 at the time. Excluding flights, I managed to do everything I wanted (including a PADI open water and advanced scuba diving training in thailand) and volunteer work on the way for an average of £130 a week. So add that up for the 12 weeks I did it, thats about £1500, excluding flights. Depends how luxurious you want it =D

it's an awesome place. the locals know how to accommodate. and you can see laos in any form of way that you want. thats what's so beautiful about it. i did everything there, from visiting templates, to tubing and getting shitfaced in vang vieng, to visiting and hiking thru the hmong villages.

looks like someone cant fit in! Vang Vien is a beautiful place and your making it look like people can somehow overdose on marjiuana. Those swedish people who died died because they took hard drugs that they could have just as easily gotten back at home. When I took the plane to Vientienne, every single tourist on that plane was going so that they can visit Vang Vien, which is a blessing for one of the poorist countries in the world.

Was there a few weeks ago and there were ,ore locals in some of the bars than backpackers. There's a time to see temples , beaches and lovely places and a time for a party. Do feel sorry for the locals if they didn't want them there they wouldn't be. They don't fuck about when it comes down to it, plus they are earning a bomb. The local grew and smoked weed before the backpackers got there. Everyone wins., the locals make a really good wage off the travellers and the us backpackers have a party

opium pizza huh, i knew laos was part of the golden triangle but i heard the Lao goverment had banished all the opium growers from the north & re-setteled them more down south.

This film clearly sets out with an agenda to show young backpackers in a bad light. Young people want to go out and have a good time - the people in Laos obviously recognised this and they cater for it.Travelling is just as much about broadening your cultural horizons as it is about escapism, taking risks and enjoying yourself.

i like laos but vang vieng is too much. my wife is from laos and took me there for two days.I loved the scenery but didn't like all the partying. The bus ride to get there from vientiane was cool i loved looking at the countryside and meeting some nice people from other countries.

Was in Vang Vieng a few months ago, sure the tubing was fun but it did have a bitter after taste for me. I don't blame them but the place has become greedy, catering purely for the party backpackers cash. I didn't feel any of that great Laoatian soul in the place and the locals despise the tourists mearley putting on a sharade to draw the punters in. It's a real shame as this is such an amazing country and I really hope it doesn't turn into another Thailand type place.

I managed to travel south east asia for 3 months (including visiting vang vieng) after working only 3 months solid labouring 6 days a week. If you want to do something, You can do it. Implying young people travel on their parents money is personally offensive.

@rudedogii ahh no problem, I just had quite a lot of people claiming I was travelling off 'daddys wallet' while I was travelling around Asia, seeing as I was 18 at the time. Excluding flights, I managed to do everything I wanted (including a PADI open water and advanced scuba diving training in thailand) and volunteer work on the way for an average of £130 a week. So add that up for the 12 weeks I did it, thats about £1500, excluding flights. Depends how luxurious you want it =D
