Certain clues made me think this video must be of a group under the auspices of a secular organization; the location is public, and the tonal quality is mostly classical . . . until about 1:45, where I began to suspect that a few born-again types might be strewn throughout the singers.
Please,Don't title it shape note singing/sacred harp as they are not the same thing.A lot of churches here in east Tn. do shape note singing but not sacred harp.
what I love about sacred harp singing: Get a roomful of professional musicians that work out every note to sound perfect and it sounds like crap... get a roomful of southern Christians who have no musical training who sing just from the heart and it sounds like heaven is on the other side of the door.
@Aerohog1 Wow, calm down killer... I am saying that hearing someone sing with spirit and heart is more joyful to hear than hearing a professional sing words that have no meaning to them. I re-read my original post. I didn't see where I said "out of tune"... you read that. But I didn't write it.
I'm glad you posted this! The second song (SH196 'Alabama') is so fine - but so hard to pitch that one seldom has the chance to hear (or sing) it. (Not to slight the other songs on your video though :)
Great sound, it sounds very much like old Elizabethan English music and sea shanty singing, probably where it originated from.

a lot of these are non-denominational. Perhaps some are more reserved than others.

@jbraly Are you saying that shape note singers are out of tune and that sounds better than being in tune?
