  • Very impressive views both of the locomotive and the scenery. I'd think that working this locomotive in cold or wet conditions could be very demanding for the crew. I'm sure there were cheers on the Southern when Bulleid gave the drivers improved cabs.

  • Very true, I suspect going tender first would be even worse.

  • Just come across this one - the dreaded "Ethel" as well. Smashing set of shots, and lots of "grunt". Thanks again, Austin. . . . . . . Alan

  • Thanks Alan, I remember this trip so well, given the conditions I wasn't sure about going but was well pleased returning home!

  • Excellent compilation - The video in the snow and sun must have been extremely satisfying! Crew were not very well protected in this locomotive design - when "men were men" eh! 5* - Mike

  • Thanks Mike, yes extremely satisfying sums it up. That day was never bettered until last February when 46115 ran over a snowy S & C

  • Great Video, 5 Stars!

  • Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed it.

  • This took me back 60 years to when I joined The Southern at Ramsgate where we had a great variety of locos including The Arthurs.

    Happy days!

    Dave

  • Luvly!!!

    Dave

  • Many thanks Dave, glad you liked it.

  • How did this slip under my radar? I know I have a Southern bias but this was a real joy to watch. Can't believe all the sun especially combined with a bit of snow. Matt used the word "magical" - just about sums it up. Thanks - Chris

  • Thanks Chris, that was the sort of day we all dream about, although I could be picky about the mist!! I have a compilation of Taw Valley shots almost ready which you may enjoy. Austin

  • The sun and snow sequence on Feb 2nd 1991 was truly awe inspiring. I just wonder if we will be luck enough to see such rare winter scenes ever again.

  • Thank you, we can but hope for the sun and snow combination at some point in the future. Will you be doing a DVD of Torbay Express runs, I loved the shots of the King. memories of childhood holidays!!

  • I will do yes, although i am not sure how long it will be. It will also feature 34067's run last year with the maroon and green coaches.

  • Oh and some on-train footage as well.

  • Magical stuff ! The light in the 2nd to last clip is incedible,is it filtered ? Shot of a lifetime i reckon !! 5 red well earned for freezing your wotsits off !!

    Matt Curtis.

  • Thanks Matt, No the shot was not filtered. It was just good fortune, especially as I wasn't sure whether to travel or not that day!!

  • Just fabulous! Love the shots in the snow in particular - so atmospheric. The acceleration along the Helwith Bridge straight is striking too.

  • Thanks David, That was the sort of day we all hope for. The 'coal road' was fun that day too!!! Austin
