"Captain Lieutenant Hoffman" is an incorrect translation of the narration. The correct rank is "Oberst Leutnant Hoffman," or Lieutenant Colonel Hoffman. An "oberst" is a colonel in the Wehrmact, but "ober" means 'above' such as in "Obergruppen Fuhrer" which is a general rank in the SS. In the Wehrmact, however, a general might be a "General Oberst," colonel general, or "General Leutnant."...pronounced (with a hard "g")...general loytnant.

General Winter remember did not win the war for Russia. Hitler still had ample opportunity between 1942-1943 to win. Hitlers poor leadership cost him dearly. Stalin was no great strategist as was proved by the early disasters in the campaign. Remember too that until Hitlers special purpose troops made their appearance many Ukranians and Russians thought the Germans as liberators indeed many collaberated at first..

@ Fluffy.........Britain was actually losing the Battle of Britain right up to the point where the Germans bombed London. They had all but crippled our south Eastern defence grids and even Dowding gave us only 2 weeks. Sorry to burst your bubble and glue perhaps? When Churchill ordered Bomber Command to attack Germany [Berlin] Hitler then lost his head ordering the bombing of London.

It was this change of tactics that gave Fighter Command chance to rearm and reorganise. The RAF then won.

Germany only lost world war 2 because Hitler failed to follow up the capture of Dunkirk. Had he not halted the panzers in favour of the Luftwaffe at Dunkirk it would have been over in 1940.

In one to one equal combat the Germans always beat the Americans and British. Remember the Kasserine Pass? Remember Monte Cassino? Even The Battle Of The Bulge. It was material superiority and the interference of Hitler which won the war for the allies. In fact Hitler was the allies best ally.

Theres was some kind of pact called Lend Lease. The americans sent supplies to all the Allied nations, russia however, was the most difficult one, the shipping had to go trough the Murmansk Rute, infested of Luftwaffe airplanes and some U Boats. The americans sent all kind of weapons to the USSR troop,s SHermans, the UK sent Valentines, Matildas and Churchills.. very usefull for the Russians.

But the Russians didnt liked the shermans after all..
