When I was living in Cornwall I swam to about 6m depth to grab an outboard motor that broke from the bracket on a mates boat, tied a line to it and came back to the surface, turned around to swim to the boat and to my absolute horror a basking shark cruised past me open mouthed. Totally harmless but when ur not expecting to see this monster right next to it's a bloody fright! Lol

By swimming around with their mouths open, they're getting a lot of food and nutrients. I don't know if they have to close their mouths to swallow or what, but they certainly don't go around with their mouths closed at any point....
