"Boku" has a somewhat masculine connotation, and "watashi" is gender neutral and used by both men and women. In anime, young girls sometimes use "boku" to sound tomboyish, but this isn't done in rl Japan, except by the socially awkward. Kinda like how in the English speaking world, not many people get "him" and "her" mixed up. Hope this clears things up.
