these comments are probably why people are more reluctant to share information with us thanks for the video (keyboard drumming is harder than you might think)
well i think that in baba o riley he used to simulate a pack of wild buffaloes playing it pretty much straight with a few snare accent and leaving out a one of crashes in the verse
That's just awful!!! Keith never played drums with his pinky. Where's the dynamics? The spontenaity that comes with arms flailing and legs pumping? Yes, many...not most...drummers use midi in the studio.......but even with midi drums that can give some dynamics, isolating every frickn track is where real music loses its soul.
why? because as an engineer you always want minimal leakage on drum tracks. the leakage from a real kit and 8 mics really causes a problem in the mix. so these techniques are showing producers/engineers how to play a good drum track using midi drums. True they dont sound like a real drummer in this demo, but 90% of all drums in recordings are midi replaced samples triggered by drum agog or other software.
sorry I wasn't specific, thanks for not being a dick lol...I program drums as well for my own projects, I was just refering to how he is trying to sound specifically like moon. it's pretty much impossible to emulate a specific human drummer using a keyboard (especially a classic rock drummer). the old analog production was far from flawless, so if you're going for that raw vintage sound, obviously a real kit would be ideal. that's all.
@umbilica yeah np. i totally agree the analog production was very sketchy so to emulate a vintage drummer a real kit would be ideal. but for many people it just isnt possible space wise in a home production D:
like with me lol. but I mostly record tech/math-metal, so it's preferable really. more precise and clean, and not limited by the skill level of a drummer. I can program some pretty crazy stuff that no drummer I have found yet can even play...
I actually use Xpand 2, which comes with Pro Tools 8. find a decent preset, put everything on separate tracks, then EQ and compress the shit out of 'em. it's tedious, but cheap and effective. plus I've grown quite used to it. I'd love to pick up Superior Drummer Metal Foundry sometime, but just havn't had the cash lately.
This is great obviously you cany be identical to keify no one can take the place of him But that was fucking incredible! Ive played keyboards and theyre fucking hard to get decent drum sounds out so in my eyes this guy is kicking ass!
Laughable. Little understanding of Mooni if you focus on G. John's produced Who's Next or Who By Numbers studio takes- to call Moon 'thrashy' a joke. John's dumbed down Moonby literally taking drums away in the studio). Baba O'Riley is maybe the most un-Moon of all Who songs. Boots of 65-74 and you will see who incorrect you are (ride symbols aside). Let's see you do Dreaming From The Waist Live from 30 Years or A Quick One from the Stones Rock N Circus. Moon live. Not some MIDI farce.
Impressive analysis and keyboard emulation. A better drum sampler might help avoid machine gunning sound of repeated snare samples playing exactly the same sample more than once in succession... more velocity layers might would also help? Check out EX drummer or BFD software instruments. But in a full mix these criticisms may me mitigated to a fair degree. Nice post- thank you!
That is a terrible approximation of Baba O'Riley. Do yourself a favour and listen to the Rock Band version (the drums by themselves) and start again...
he probably got it from that video where townshend said something similar, about playing the same thing on different toms, but i think he was joking...apparently this guy does not actually listen to the who
@rudiefailed keith was ver plain and boring drummer..

I don't see a kick and a snare. I see two keys on a fucking keyboard. I honestly hope you don't call yourself a drummer.
dave8594 4 months ago
It's not a snare on the "and" - it's on the 2s "a". This is to be swung.
Advisable to use VST's next time.

why would you do this? why not just get a real kit? this dosn't sound like any real drummer, let alone a specific one....
