Remember that there were independents who helped in World War II- Packard, for one, built their own licensed copy of the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. RR never made an offer to build a licensed copy of any of their engines to the Big Three. actually GM=Opel which sells pretty good in Germany and other European countries. Opel is trying to buy out GM's shares in the company though. Ford makes some decent fuel efficient cars in Europe, but they haven't brought them to the US market due to limited success. When I was 16, I bought my first car, a Chevy.Three months later, the car was in the shop due to a faulty transmission that the agency replaced--for free. I traded the car bought a Honda. It was 1977 and I've never bought another GM product. Ya all want my opinion? Forget a bail out. The management group can't see their error over 40 years, they deserve close. The situation GM and Ford are in, is due in large part to unreasonable labor contracts and capital greed (GMAC) The $750 Billion bailout was to have some return for the taxpayer in the credit and real estate markets, if we give it to you, where is our return? I'm against spending any more money saving any of the Big 3 auto makers. I would support taxpayer money going to programs for retraining or education for laid off auto workers. Maybe create education loan programs to help these people move to other industries like healthcare or technology? That would be an investment in the country's future, instead of pouring it down the drain of dying corporations.

Our company is currently testing 2 all-electric vehicles, a 4 passenger car, and a 2-passenger mini-truck. The car has a top speed of 45 mph, no room, noisy as crap, and can only travel about 60-70 miles on a single overnight charge. The truck is worse. Im afraid they have a long way to go before all-electrics kill the gas engine.

We shouldn't bail out GM until they agree to change the structure of the company with something that works. Why should the American taxpayer pay to boost a company that is going to be run in the exact manner that caused its downfall in the first place.

Unless GM begins to make cars that people want to drive, with emphasis on quality not quantity, and begin to focus on customer satisfaction - they should not be given a dime.

I agree, but there must be other changes too. Enforce the fair trade agreements that have been ignored by other countries (especially Japan), and stop the practice of foreign companies building cars here to beat the import tariff.
