  • It's a quite similar Kwan Dao form to Hung Gar's....

  • @blackarawak83

Bor. have you studied Hung Gar?

  • Very different to the Kwan Dao form I learnt but there are several key parts that are identical, namely General Kwan on his horse, cleaning his blade and stroking his beard.

  • if the kwan daos weigh more than 15 lbs, then damn it be so hard to block & parry, no wonder Guan Yu was stronger than Lu bu's spear

  • One thing. IF you think that is just a reference vedio for training of strength, why not admit that the man cannot fight in real action.

  • You know what? I'll admit it so you can leave it alone, and move on with your life!! You have no clue about the weapon or it's movements, but yet you want to be a critic, go figure?!?!

  • @jmd161 agreed. what makes you so sure he cant "fight in real action" from just this video? Quite the bone head comment.

  • the guy is practicing his form on his own COZ HE WANTS TO PRACTICE!!! CMA is "flowery" because it deceives the opponent. while one hand deceives the opponent the other attacks.

  • all good. its hard to tell whether he could really fight in real life...i'd say so. its obvious that this is a ref. video and a very heavy weapon.

I practice CMA myself and with my home made kwan dao i own all of my friends in real fights, including ones that have trained in fencing and kendo, for longer than me! they've done the old school thing, eaten some humble pie and started training my style.

i dont like some of the movements this guy does in his form but thats a stylistic difference.

  • you do hak fu aswel? have you not noticed that this was in the 70's so therefore must be more traditional than yours. also, this was when grandmaster wong cheung was alive so i do not know what they teach you anymore, but i know you are wrong.

  • Man, if you have eyes to see, he was just too slow and flowery. Otherwise you must never practise on any sparring.

  • No! you don't have the eyes or experience to comprehend that this is just a refrence video. It's not meant for performance just a refrence. If you had any understanding you would know, this is just a walk through to video the movements.

  • I just ask a very simple question. Have you ever spare with a real opponent?

  • All the time! I just answered your question, it wasn't a negative remark towards you. It's obvious that you don't have any experience with CMA weapons. How many CMA people have "YOU" sparred with?

  • Never. Also it wasn't a negative remark too. I sincerely think that the most important thing in weapon training is accuracy and supreme control over the weapon. And this techique can never be obtained when you do the weapon dance

  • millenia of doing it this way says otherwise. that's like saying taiji people can't fight because they move too slow. by doing the movements slowly you have more control and can concentrate on small details you may miss at high speed (which should also be practiced)

  • haha i'll take you on. no problem. I joined a bjj class once for fun. the instructor was a big ass who almost choked me till I knocked out. don't know why I sqeeze his nuts. when i walked out he was still laying there. sparring is only a sport. this is the real thing bud

  • woot your the man! Agreed, tooth and nail buddy, tooth and nail!

  • The Kwan Dao originally was meant to be carried by horse riders to cut off one of the leg of his opponent's horse.

Kwan Do use (on foot) is heavy to develope strength in training. (Of course lighter versions were used during combat.)

  • The similarity between masturbation and playing weapon by one's own is that: You don't need an opponent at all. You may think that you are a superman when you are masturbating, but you may have ejaculatory problem when you are having sex with real person

  • The similarity between masturbation and playing weapon by one's own is that: You don't need an opponent at all. You may think that you are a superman when you are masturbating, but you may have ejaculatory problem when you are having sex with real person

  • I never know that tae kwan dao uses weapons

    what an misleading title!

  • You're misunderstanding everything. The weapon is called a Kwon Dao (Long knife)

  • It is the kind of training. Why chinese martial art always practise on its own. Why not practice more practically on real opponent?

  • You're making a general assumption, which is very bad on your part. You assume that all CMA stylist train the same, and that's not true. There are many schools and teachers that train weapons live.

  • Contrary to popular belief, a battle worthy chinese halberd isn't too heavy to wield effectively. Halberds have always had their place on the pre-modern battlefield and are an effective weapon. They are not a dualing weapon, but the weight and momentum they can generate increase their cutting capacity and concussive force agasint soilders equiped with armour.

  • It is not the difference in the form itself. It is sparring and practise with a real oponent that makes the difference. I just think that Kwan Do is just too heavy to attack or defence quickly. It is quite good to play it in a performance. But in real fight I would rather use a spear or a sabre.

  • Depends on the person. I prefer a staff myself, but i'm a large guy and i can handle a kwan dao quite well.

  • Its a weapon for a different purpose. A battle ready Kwan dao is not as heavy as legend would suggest. It is a very agile weapon that uses the momentum it generates to its advantage. Plus, it has an advantage over a spear or sabre when you factor in battle field condistions such as armor, calvary and the sheer numbers. Think any type of halbred reapon and its place on a battlefeild and you will unerstand that the Kwan Dao has its uses and its very practicle.

  • this is a personal preference. my qing long yan yue dao is about 18 pounds. although i am far from being fast with it, i decently efficient in covering myself. the point is, you can only dodge this thing. there is no way in hell you will be able to block or parry it. ive been able to smash through a staff with it.

  • This man can hardly fight. If you have trained in Kendo or fencing. You test you skill with an oponent. Just have a glance you know that he can't fight

  • Because you play kendo/fencing that makes you a expert on who can and can't fight with weapons? That makes no sense at all! Those two arts have nothing in common with the Kwan Dao (long knife) or CMA (chinese martial arts) The concepts, princapals, and footwork are totally different. Also you're looking at a pre arranged form and judging fighting prowess, that shows you have no idea of what your watching and it's useage.

  • Though I support you, i must argue that kendo (jian dao) in chinese is very much related to CMA when it is applied.

  • kwan dao? you mean tae kwon do?

  • Kwan Do is the chinese name of the weapon he's using in the vid.

  • You think this man can fight?

  • I'm pretty sure he can, how about yourself? Do you have any video of yourself to offer up?

  • I play Kendo and Fencing. They simulate real fights. Not showing off. What do you practice. Have you ever sparred with others.

  • I practice Sil Lum Hak Fu Mun (Shaolin Black Tiger) the style that this guy in the video also plays. I would never think that my CMA knowledge prepares me to fight against a kendo or fencing player in their relm. If you think that playing those two styles would help you within "my" relm, you're sadly mistaking. With a kwan dao in hand you would never even get within range to use your foil or kendo stick.

  • VEry nice demonstration of all the traditional kwan dao postures
