  • Just when i thought Japan had a good Technology.

  • ahhh paperback write i love the stories and did anyone else notice ttht paul + george with the main riff gives it a really good effect

  • @JimDeYoung1 You know... they wouldn't even need 64 tracks or today's computer recording equipment.. just a decent mixing board and a 16 track recorder and some good vocal mics and mics for the amps and drums.. decent sound reinforcement equipment and this show could have been released as an album.. and of course a few more Rubber Soul and Revolver tracks.. imagine them tackling "And Your Bird Can Sing"

  • @curzonator There was good equipment then..it's just that the practice of a rock band owning and trucking around tons of musical quality P.A., onstage monitor speakers, fully mic'ed up instruments and Front-Of-House mixing boards OR sports stadiums maintaining theater quality speakers instead of the general public address systems for announcing sports scores had not developed yet. Ten years later McCartney had 6 tractor trailers of equipment for the WOA tour..

  • Just the most amazing players - fearless and making it up as they go. Their only model was Elvis. This song shows the very beginnings of their (and our) journey away from 3 minute songs about "the girl"....

  • lol George :)

  • Monitors I don't think they had em ever. True professionals. No one got fired either.

  • @162Aceman It's unbelievable that the practice of good sound reinforcement and live concert setup was at the level it was when the Beatles were touring. It was usually them and Mal and one or two other people handling their bags and their equipment.. maybe a tech from Vox and that's it. It wouldn't be until the Kinks, involving theatrical people, and bands like the Who, Pink Floyd or Grateful Dead began to assemble better sound systems otherwise they were at the mercy of the hall or stadium

  • los beatles tocan bien hasta con instrumentos y microfonos destruidos

  • Live at Budokan. Amazing

    ]

  • What a mess, lol....still love these guys though.

  • He was beginning to look like he wanted to just smash the thing, the way he grabs it back into place lol

  • @mattbatben10 considering how seriously McCartney takes these things you can imagine what he was thinking. And the Budokan shows are considered among the best presented shows of the Beatles career.. though I think the Palais De Sports show in 1965 is amazing and the German shows from June 1966 are good performances under more primitive conditions.

  • They were great but this is a very poor performance. Bad acoustics, off key, mike problems..definitely a cluster fxxk.

  • @zorgen123 it's unbelievable... considering how unmotivated they were by this point in their career to give live performance under these circumstances.. they are actually pretty good! you have to shake your head to think that by 1966 Japan's electronics companies were poised to begin their dominance of this field yet SOMEONE couldn't tighten the hinge on the mic stand??? What might have been if JVC or Panasonic/Ramsa had provided proper sound reinforcement for the hall!

  • @zorgen123 Also.. lack of rehearsal, interest, and enthusiasm on the Beatles part. The past three years had exhausted them and made them really sour on the whole touring experience. The 1966 began with death threats in Japan from Japanese upset about the sacred Budokan being defiled by pop music and a firestorm over John's Jesus comments stirred up in America. THEN the Phillipines..later they'd stop in Bombay on their way home.. wish they'd played a show or two there!

  • Looks like no monitors, and thousands of screeming Japanese, yet they still sing in key pretty well, exceptional talent

  • 0:40 LOL

  • @pepiflor why lol? my frined?

  • still sound relevant, modern, and tight as fuck in 2011. best band ever.

  • why didn't he just stand on the side of the microphone it kept turning to?

  • @Sdrawkab Thank you! i was wondering the same thing hahaha!

  • 0:50 here you can see that it is the same paul as the paul of today... so alike!

  • They loved playing in Japan, as the fans were quiet while they played. So they could hear themselves.

Part of the Japanese (super polite) culture. They consider it disrespectful to make noise while someone is performing for you. They think you should, out of respect, be quiet.

They only scream at concerts, at the end of the songs

  • Paul: "Paperback writer.... paperback *god damnit* (grabs mic) WRITER" 0:38

  • great voice paul!

  • 39 people don't know music!

  • what the beatles have on stage to play to thousands is what most bar bands have today, but we have the use of moniters now to hear what you are playing it is unbelievable that they were that tight with no moniters.

  • the equipment they have on stage in front of thousands is about what the average bar band now has now except now days we have moniters to hear ourselves, with no moniters they were great.

  • No, George at 1:01 stole my heart!

  • Wow, The Beatles must have been pissed after that performance, especially Paul. Notice the way Paul yanked the mic earlier in the song. Then at the end, it seemed like he said, "To hell with it", and bowed before the song ended. I am a Beatles fan, but I must admit, that wasn't their best at that moment. However, they tried to kick ass with that song.

  • shitty mic

  • The Beatles Live, 60 to 65, were fantastic, the energy has never been equaled, anywhere. In 1966, the songs were getting more complicated, overdubbing, effects, etc. Remember, there were NO monitor speakers back then!! Could you imagine not hearing the drums, much less knowing if you were in key, playing in front of thousands? The very fact that Paperback writer and later on, Nowhere man, where in tune, is still amazing to me. Thats PRO.

  • los amoo♥

  • George at 1:01 trying to get the audience to drown out the shitty mics.

  • Microphone backtaker!

  • Japanese girls yell at everything.

  • Go Ringo!

  • I bet the sound guy was fired on the spot

  • who set up their equipment on these tours? Pauls mike must have stopped working, so john and George had to cover up for him. i love george at 2:10

  • ありがとう

    my song listening

    subarashi

    watashi

    nouta

    mokite

  • I actually think they were pretty tight in this performance.

  • Don't be too hard on The Beatles for the live shows that sounded like crud. One must keep in mind several facts: 1, The sound equipment of the 60's vs the screaming they were facing. 2. They had next to zero time for practicing. The time they had off stage was spent recording and writing new songs. 3. Towards the end of their live performance days, they pretty much no longer cared.

"They used us as an excuse to go mad and then blamed it on us. " George Harrison.

  • stuipd mircophone moving!

  • 0:43 i love the way John and George fading in the back

    btw. The guitar's sound great.

  • May be the worst live performance made by The Beatles , SO sorry to say that but that's reality....

  • wheres the fucking roadie to fix the microphone? ....sack the cunt lol

  • Damn Microphone

  • fucking microphone!!!

  • Terrible sound, but it's still The Beatles! That 45rpm just may be my favorite, "Rain" & "Paperback Writer", but I also played the hell out of my "Help! / I'm Down" 45rpm...

  • Fight the microphone, Paul!

Ah, you gotta love the Beatles, their great.

  • How can a book be based on a novel?

  • guitars arent plugged in?

  • 39 people have a screwed up microphone... :P

  • maybe John and George is laughing at Paul because of his microphone :))

  • @paulstarTV I think Paul is laughing with himself there. hahaha

  • Lol did someone else notice Paul's eternal struggle against the turning crappy microphone?? xD

  • @Zangoose69 That made me smile throughout the whole video lol XD

  • @Zangoose69 what's unbelievable is that Paul is fighting a poorly set up microphone in JAPAN of all places. Mind you.. the ONLY country to record and maintain several color recordings of the Beatles live in concert at the peak of their success.. and home of JVC, Panasonic, and SONY of all places!!!

  • got to love how those mics did!

  • Who the fuck cares about how they performed their more and more complex songs to some japanese at this stage where local people even protested them being there. This was only months before confining themselves completely in studio and changing the history of music even more.

  • Think John and Paul shouldve traded mics for this one

  • Paul wanted to be a Paperback Writer lol!

  • This video is proof that they sucked when playing live by that point. I think their decision to stop touring was a good one. I mostly blame the audience though. They couldn't hear themselves playing anymore.

  • @ChocolateHoneycomb You do realize they couldn't hear themselves, plug yours ears so you can't hear and record yourself singing. See how it sounds after.

  • @ChocolateHoneycomb We must be watching different films; they're not f*****g Guns'n'Roses.

  • Stupid microphone won't fucking cooperate!

  • This wasn't too hard for them to do live. They'd have pissed over this in '63 or '64. They just couldn't give a toss about playing live at this point. You can't even say they were knackered because they'd had the first quarter of '66 off which was a luxury for them. They were a fabulous live band (Check out Sweden in 1963 or the NME 1964 concerts for prove...and the roof gig of course!)

  • Paul having a little trouble with the mic at 0:38

  • I'd fucking love to see the Beatles live even if they sucked in concert.

  • @Zimnyific The reason why they might not have sounded great in concert is because they did not have the audio equipment of today .Amplifiers Mixing boards etc. They often used the P.A. system for whatever building they were in. That and the fact that they themselves have said they could barely hear themselves play due to all the screaming.

  • 39 terrorists....fuck em

  • cool...the beatles could suck too, like the rest of us who have off nights

  • tenian mucho menos volumen que un sonido de una fiesta de la calle en iztapalapa.

  • hello ....george martin was an audio engineer

  • many bands made rock since 50's and many bands are still rockin' over the world

what about rap in 2050 ???

  • these guys were paving untouched territory on how to be a rockstar for future bands to emulate ...i luv seeing these film clips....i mean u have to think about they were pretty smart to film it.....and forget the quality...its awesome...do u realize how easy it iz to filter out the bad sounding talent nowadays...back in the day u either had or u didnt. the beatles had it... they were pretty good.

  • PUTO MICROFONO

  • PAUL EMPEZO MUY MAL PERO AUN ASI LOS BEATLES SON LOS MEJORES

  • i bet paul felt like throwing that mic across the arena

  • 39 people likes Pauls microphone .

  • i bet Paul hates his mic

  • J'adore les Beatles. Ils sont mon préféré groupe musical jamais. Longue vie à l'héritage BEATLES

  • who are these 39 people who don't like this? deaf birds?

  • From what I understand, early on in Japan the Beatles mistook the lack of screaming for disapproval.I love the way Paul had to keep fiddling with the microphone.I know the Budokan concerts were actually professionally recorded, with the intent to release as an album...it's just that the actual performances didn't really sound that great, were a bit off-key, so they decided not to release them...except as an unofficial bootleg. I have a CD of the show, "Five Days in a Judo Arena".Good stuff.

  • I'm not sure but I think this was Budokan. The Beatles were used to playing to screaming crowds that basically made it impossible to hear what they were playing most of the time, especially since the feedback speakers that would have allowed them to didn't exist back then...consequently they weren't used to having to play very well live, because it didn't make much difference...in Japan, audiences were relatively quiet and actually paid attention to the music--must have been shocking.

  • Even off key it sounds amazing! :D

    George is smart.

  • hmm ringo looks really bored

  • 39 people are as weak as those microphones.

  • who the fuck would dare dislike this

  • If you notice, they listen most intently but not noisely in Japan as they did in other countries, I bet the Beatles were surprised that they could actually hear themselves perform.

  • EL MICROFONO PAUL ♥

  • Pete best messed up Paul's mic but failed to jam Ringo's

  • bass is awesome in this song

  • I'm pretty sure somebody somebody was excuted samuria style for that mic.

  • I Was Going To Flag This Video But I Didn't Get The Option " Being Too Awsome"

  • they seem a little annoyed in this concert

  • use that high voice George!!!!! :)

  • Loved their outing in Japan :D

  • FRA-A-JACA......FRA-A-JACA (best fa-la-la-la's ever !)

  • LOL You can see Paul trying to keep his cool with this mic. LOL soo funny.

  • 38 wanted to se the Stones haha

  • o microfone dos japoneses está uma merda

  • okay, their audio system sucks xD

    Poor Beatles.

  • Audio engineered by chimps on crack.

  • @rriverstone1 hahahahaha so true

  • @rriverstone1 That's about right. If the Beatles had played the auditorium of the sorry little rural middle school I attended, this is what it would have sounded like. Two "Mr. Microphones" hooked up to a Burger King drive-thru speaker.

  • @rriverstone1 Even better: not audio engineered at all. The Beatles arrived on stage, tuned their instruments, plugged them directly into the amps, and played, haha!

  • @Canaveral305 You know that saying about a person representing themselves in court having a fool for a lawyer? Well, a Beatle micing himself in a concert has a fool for a sound engineer.

  • @rriverstone1 Pretty much, yeah, but that's how things were in the 60's. The Beatles were pretty much the first band that needed to play for such great audience, so it's a problem they didn't know existed.

  • @Canaveral305 I've heard the noise of the crowds is a major factor in why the Beatles stopped performing: nobody could hear the music, including the Beatles, who, no matter how much they jacked the gain on their own monitors, couldn't hear each OTHER to perform! That's frickin rude, dude. Did you come to scream, or listen?

  • @rriverstone1 I know, that's a problem The Beatles had. As good as (in my opinion) their music is, their early success was still hugely based on their image. And a success based on the image leads to people going to concerts to see you, and not to hear you. I guess they got tired of that, also.

Anyway, when I hear what they recorded after they stopped touring, I'm not really complaining about the decision, haha!

  • @Canaveral305 If you search for "Paul Ingles" you will find some radio documentaries about Beatles' albums and history. Also, Paul has a radio show called "Peace Talks." He's done several shows on Lennon & Ono. In fact, he got a rare, cuz she doesn't give them, interview with Ono recently. He goes through albums song-by-song, with interview subjects explaining lyrics, musical influences, biographical influences and historical stories of that song's production. I transcribed most of these docus.

  • @rriverstone1 It was also 45 years ago..

Maybe you could use your time travel app on your Iphone and help them out.

  • @Christiantodd1 FAIL! Look this up on YouTube: Matrix Mobster with Bonus Preview

    From: rationalwarrior

  • @rriverstone1 No thanks, i'll pass. Also, the "FAIL!" comes when you critique technology from...wait, let me spell it out for you...F-O-R-T-Y-F-I-V-E years ago, and think it makes you sound clever. Who cares what it sounds like? It's old rare footage. It's not going have the same good quality sound as your Nickelback cd's do..

  • @Christiantodd1 lolzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! tell that nicklebag sucking fag

  • @busteroo7 I don't own a Nickelback cd. I was referring to you..the guy who still lives with his parents.

  • @rriverstone1 What audio engineers?..These were the days before they had sound men getting all the levels right.

  • @rriverstone1 you mean chinks ? lol

  • The vocals are not that good. But the song is just excellent.

  • When George waved I have to admit I waved back.

  • George and John are just like: aaaaaaaaaa ooooooooooo iiiiiiiii taa writaaa iiiiiaaaaoo

  • 1:3 hahahaha :)))

  • I was there.

  • What happened with Paul's microphone?

  • @IlyhaCos i was wondering that

  • You could hear John coming in strong on this performance. You can actually hear how it would have sounded had John sung lead on it.

It's all good and I just love this gem released in 1/66 and performed in Japan the summer of 1966, the Dodge Dart Era. The Beatles rule!

  • The Beatles are proof positive that nothing is Beatle proof!

  • i'm spanish but i hate the japaneses >=( buf buf and i speak english too

  • How much Spanish do you speak, troll?

Non-xenophobes may find other languages annoying because they can't understand them and want to. For them, there is this thing called Google Translate

Our troll finds high-functioning users of its own language annoying because it can't understand them and seeks to take it out on the next guy down the perceived social ladder from it. For it, there is only the dubious satisfaction of attempting totalitarian domination via YouTube posts; pointless, at best

  • yu tube is number one for me thanks alot for real.Beatles ROCK.

  • me to some time.

  • Before the Boom Stand!

  • As the years went on,'65 and '66, the songs got harder to play and sing Live. But they could still pull it off, even without monitors. I would've loved to see them live, even on a bad night. They did seem to have some sort of magical aura about them that put the people under some kind of spell.

  • what was that short clip at the end

  • @montev4 The clip at the end looks like the Stones to me. Looks like Brian Jones on the left and Jagger at the mic. Not 100% sure tho.

  • i can see that the mic is pissing him off

  • Os Beatles foram heróis..Retorno fraco na época.Não dá prá mandar este som sem retorno..Mistura tudo.

  • were to come to NYC and host a huge concert over Ground Zero. Obviously, a lot of people would be very upset. Its wa the same in Japan at the Budokan.) Not everybody was against it, of course (hence, the screaming and cheering from the audience).

  • It wasn't because John said he was"bigger than Jesus" (really he didn't, the news tried to blow it out of context: but even still it wouldn't matter since most of the Japanese are buddhist or shintoist anyway), it was because the Budokan was a sacred place to some of the people, and it was a huge shock to the Japanese that some huge band called the Beatles wanted to play their loud western music in one of their most holy places (In comparison, it would be like if some foreign band

  • Well, since people want to agrue about why the performance was good or bad i think i should clear somethings up. As many of you know, this performance was held at the Budokan in Japan. What alot of people don't know is what in the hell the Budokan was/is. The Budokan was a building that housed important martial arts matches and other things in Japanese tradition. Because of this, the Japanese saw the Budokan as almost a sacred place. That's why the Japanese were shocked.

  • They are my favorite band but lets face it THEY SUCKED!

  • @MyDanelectro Listen to them live somewhere else dumbass, the equipment sucked in the stadium, especially since most people of Japan did not want them to come after John Lennon said they were more popular than Jesus, so why would they bother getting good equipment for them when the kkk threatened to come kill them if they showed up for the concert and most people of Japan did not want them there. Get your facts straight

  • @CoIeStones What does using good equipment and the KKK have to do with there sound not being as clean as usual. most likely they were tired but I doubt they intentionally got crappy amps and mics plus if the japanese didnt want them there why did all those people show up to the concert and cheer after every song?

  • @GrisGrisOnUrDoorStep you are so right. they are using the same stuff like they always do like their vox super beatle amp, their casinos, a hoffner bass and ludwig drums. all nice stuff

  • @MyDanelectro agreed, but i wouldn't say the beatles sucked. but i would say that this is one of the beatles worst performances of playing paperback writer.

  • @GrisGrisOnUrDoorStep The KKK scared most people away from the arena, and its true that they did not want them there, just because the government and religious people there did not want them to come doesnt mean that everybody would not show up, the people cheering were obviously fans or non religious or superficious people. Watch the documentary...

  • what is the video there at the slit second of the end

  • around 1 minute in george waves and they go crazy

  • What was that mic's deal? Paul had to keep it in line a few times.

  • @trueSTUFF2296 it wanted to be man handled a little :)

  • @trueSTUFF2296 it wanted to be man handled a little :) who can blame it?

  • @kwen092185 Especially with Mr. Mccartney to be the one handling it

  • they werent terrible live but i dunno, if you watch bob dylan live in the same year with the electric, it amazes me, i just feel a bit meh at this, maybe its cos they didnt do their amazing songs live

  • @starcraft108 they didnt sound to good because that was the first time in like a year anyone actually heard them at a concert, so they didnt really prepare ya digg? they were expecting no one to b able to hear them.

  • "Not a great band, live": This was before monitors and all the other technical advances which came later. These guys invented live R & R as we know it today.

    Dan

  • I bet the people who were suppose to check the mica were didn't like the Beatles and try to ruin their performance evilly as possible...or the mic threw a fit and decided to take it out on paul.!

  • 38 people dont know music
