Something like this really does offer me hope for the future. I badly damaged my left leg when I was young and this would allow me to go about my later life in a way close to normality.
This is scary, as well as awe inspiring. The advancement of humanity is still trucking on. But his comment of not wishing to have his old leg's back, actually makes me truly wonder about him.
As if I lost my own arm, I would wish to have it back. I know in the deepest part of who I am, that I would rather have flesh and blood, then steel and plastic.
In 10 to 15 years time, my rheumatoid arthritis will likely degenerate my joints to such a degree that I'll have the mobility of someone in their late 80s. I'm only 22 years old and I'm already having severe difficulty running. I hope that this man's technology will one day help people both missing their limbs, but help those with degenerative joint conditions too. His designs are simply awe inspiring.
Now we just need to wait for the day where these bionic limbs can become even better than what you are born with. The abortion issue will be seen as a petty squabble compared to the prospect of chopping your own arm off to get one better than nature intended.
The natural human body is light years ahead of any current or near future prosthetics. Notice how he had to muscle himself up just to stand on his prosthetic legs. Just because you can make a leg stronger pound per pound with artificial muscles, or "stronger" with ballistic materials, doesn't make it better than flesh and blood. The picture of the woman was beautiful, right until it got to the legs, which looked horrible and out of place.
@Pillowflame The goal of prosthetics should be to mix organic with inorganic. For example, growing bones based on carbon nanotubes for structure to create stronger bones, combining aritificial muscle tissue with nature tissues to create stronger humans, weaving silk or synthetic fibers into skin to make it bullet proof and more damage resistant. The goal should be to upgrade what exists, and cover up any sign of machinery with organic tissue grown on top. That would be the ultimate prosthetic.
And I just want to add that, the biggest revolution is not making robotic limbs, it is discovering how to enhance the human mind, allow it to connect with software (wirelessly preferably, a form of technological telepathy) and to develop sophisticated AI. One day bodies will be entirely unnecessary. That's much farther in the future though. Science Fiction tries to speculate on such changes, but as history has shown us, things often develop differently than predicted.
I realize the potential of this field of technology, but as of today prosthetics are very crude and limited. Look at the dudes legs. He can walk, but in the end his body is having to make accomodations in order to use those legs. Notice how he gripped the chair and muscled himself up to stand? The natural human body is light years ahead of any current or near future technology. And just because you can make a stronger limb with artificial muscles, doesn't make it better.
This guy needs to word himself a bit better. "We can rid the world of disability". If he meant both physical and mental disabilities, I'm appalled by his choice of words.
He says that he would prefer not to have his real legs back because they're what makes him who he is... well how is that different from taking a disability away from someone when that's what makes them who they are?
As someone who is mentally disabled, I am offended by the idea of taking away that part of my personality.
@FlyingWardogFilms While I can understand why you have reacted by taking offense to the notion of your disorder being referred to as a disease, you should be aware of the fact that 'disease' is a term that broadly refers to any condition which impairs normal function of the mind and body.
Disorder is generally the preferred terminology to be used in medicine, but disease is still a valid word for any abnormal, negative condition.
I would, but then I wouldn't be as much of a nuisance. If you want me to shut up, why not just stop talking to me? That tends to work really well in most cases.
@FlyingWardogFilms "Disabilities is an umbrella term, covering impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions. An impairment is a problem in body function or structure; an activity limitation is a difficulty encountered by an individual in executing a task or action; while a participation restriction is a problem experienced by an individual in involvement in life situations." - World Health Organisation
@FlyingWardogFilms "This guy needs to word himself a bit better. "We can rid the world of disability". If he meant both physical and mental disabilities, I'm appalled by his choice of words."
He's talking about getting help to people who want it, not imposing his will upon everyone. Not everyone with a disability will be so keen to keep it.
For example, I know plenty of people with Dyslexia that wish they did not have to deal with it. Don't get offended by things that don't apply to you.
What the term defines as per the dictionary definition will NOT change how people interpret the word in a real setting. When you say 'disease', it sounds like an affliction. There are disabled people in Americorp (if you've heard of it) that teach students in schools that disabilities are NOT diseases.
That's like saying the use of the word 'nigger' as per the dictionary definition meaning 'ignorant' shouldn't be used offensively towards blacks because it's not literally racist.
@FlyingWardogFilms "That's like saying the use of the word 'nigger' as per the dictionary definition meaning 'ignorant' shouldn't be used offensively towards blacks because it's not literally racist."
As long as you completely ignore the dictionary citing that meaning as necessarily disparaging and offensive.
Look, I'm sorry that you have a problem with people using that word to refer to your disabilities - I really am - but I can't accept the claim that the word offensive to disabled people.
@FlyingWardogFilms I have a genetic disorder that causes my body to shake uncontrollably, and though not caused by a virus or similar external influence, I have no problem referring to this disability as a disease. The idea of someone using science and technology to wipe this disease/disability from the face of the earth is comforting to me.
I suppose we'll just have to agree to disagree, I apologise if I have offended you.
No harm done. I can understand if you think of it as a disease on your end, but others might not be so tolerable of having their disability called a disease. Youtube is the first place I've ever had someone refer to it as a disease, so it really took me off guard and annoyed me.
While disabilities can impact a person's life greatly, I prefer to refer to my disability as being "derped". It's a fun word to say and doesn't sound quite as hm... degrading, I guess, as the word 'disabled'.
So is 'retarded' in its slang form. Retardation is, by the dictionary, "slowness or limitation in intellectual understanding and awareness, emotional development, academic progress, etc"... but in society, you often see teenagers / young adults replacing the word 'stupid' with 'retard'. So if I were to say "That's stupid", another person might say "That's retarded".
But obviously when someone says 'retard', it comes off the same as saying 'disease' - offensive. Derp sounds silly.
@FlyingWardogFilms If people use it enough to refer to people with diseases/disabilities, it will eventually become yet another disparaging remark - the same thing happened with faggot, queer, etc.
wow i am really amazed at this so saying not to alter nature too much is stupid? are you saying that messing with nature never had any bad side effects? i was just joking with the comment jeez im not religious at all its just i could imagine a old christian man saying what i said in the comment i thought it was funny but if i heard someone say it i would stop and analyze what he or she said instead of ruling it out just because the word God is in it i feel really bad for people like you :( THINK
