This is terrific interpretation of one of the greatest songs of the second half of the twentieth century. I have to believe that this performance could only come from someone who truly understood this tune. She sings it with an measure of empathy for the song, and a measure of authority that could only have been earned the hard way. It's the only interpretation of the original I've been able to listen to over and over again.
She does justice to this great Bob Dylan song. I am a true dylan fan and i cant stand most of the covers but this one is decent and independently good.
@chetmobileful I'm not here to educate you. You have to educate yourself, and that takes an enormous effort and much time. I'm sorry you can't appreciate the poetic verse. I couldn't, quite frankly, appreciate Dylan for quite some time. But after years of reading and exposure to art beyond the two-dimensional, you begin to aquire an appreciation for things that are less obvious..less perfect. And in that obfuscation you find a meaning and beauty that is more profound than the conventional.
Severe laryngitis, coupled with persistent cocaine abuse from 1967 to 1969, permanently altered the sound of Faithfull's voice, leaving it cracked and lower in pitch.
@chetmobileful Have you ever seen a painting by Monet? Van Gogh? It's not supposed to be a salient, perfect photograph of the real world, and yet it conveys more depth, beauty, and meaning than any conventional illustration. The poet does the same thing. With words....
Not to knock on Dylan, but there are so many covers of his songs that are better than his original version--this is one. See Jerry Garcia's version of this same song--brilliant, poignant. Let's not even mention Hendrix and "All Along the Watchtower."
The pedlar now speaks, best line ever "Tell me someone whos not a parricide and ill go out and say a prayer for them" Dylan manages to combine both the horrific and the comic. Mans propensity to cruelty and discrimination, "anyone but the parricide". Then we have the image of this poor soul trying to pray. Dont bite the hand which feed you.
@varettah Dylans soul bleeds this much is clear. If you dont cough, we will cut your thumbs. ( cough confess( So dylan knows the truth, " night", from the start. I know night is ignorance, looks like, BUT IT IS DYLANS RELATION TO truth. As the veracity of dylans vision grows so does the impact of his words upon his audience, thus his vision a LIFE from his creator BECOMES. UNtil the visions of jonah remain... one must remember jonah is a fugitive...check out MOBY DICK.
Have you got the lyrics and please could you write them down for me ? Pleeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaase . it would be so kind of you She is great beautiful song, song by a great interpreter who's voice is so emotionnal great interpreter, Marianne is also a lady His voice is such an emotion she is so sensitive, She upsets me sa voix est une telle émotion elle est si émouvante sa voix me bouleverse ses chansons aussi dans lesquelles elle met sa vie
According to Wikipedia, Andrew Motion, the former poet - laureate of Great Britain, once called this "the greatest song ever written." No small compliment....
This has got to be the 25th consecutive time I've listened to this cover. This is absolutely beautiful. Unsurpassed lyrical content. Only wish she would have sung the whole song and not left out some of the verses....
71 her spotlight year alright.. and despite many verses omitted she became the first artist in 5 years to cover it on a studio album. Few peers would even know how to approach such riddle and cryptic metaphor galore.
"and Madonna she still hasn't showed, we see the empty cage now corrode where her cape from the stage once had flowed, the fiddler he now steps to the road and writes everything's been returned which was owed, on the back of the fish truck that loads while my conscience explodes"
This is a delicately perfect rendition of this song - perPerPERFECT - and the photo likewise is an ideal match for the time and place and feeling of the time of it's creation. I LOVE Marianne's precise vocals - her clear & clean pronunciation and the varied dynamics are just right. This shows Dylan in his achievement as a great writer poet in American 20th Century culture. - and of course her singing the song shows the wider impact of his art. Thanks Marianne and thanks for the posting!
Absolutely magical .... Dylan's words....and Marianne's voice/interpretation......

Guitar and voice cooperation is so good, it gives a magic suggestive impact,
so I have to play it over and over.

SHE KNOWS HIS SOUL.
SINGS HIM BETTER THAN ANYONE. I NEVER REALIZED IT TILL I JUST HEARD HER VERSION.
SHE IS AS MUCH A POET AS HE IS.

apart from the fact that Dylan's sheffiel or london performances in 1966 blow this away...
(one thing is sing a song, one thing is live the song you wrote....one of the greatest song ever)
you're wonderfull marianne!

i sure like the London 26.5.66 version the most exactly for the reason mentioned above

This is a nice cover, but it doesn't come close to the original. Jerry's is just okay.
The original Watchtower is a hell of a song, and it's not really true that Jimi's blows it out of the water.

But Mona Lisa musta had the highway blues
You can tell by the way she smiles...
