  • I have a 2000 Cherokee Sport...doing this same thing, I pulled the engine....This NOISE is from the Wrist pin..............SORRY TO BE THE BEARER OF BAD NEWS !!!! The Engine WILL BLOW

  • Our Jeep 2001 sounds exactly like yours!!!!We just changed the oil and oil filter (10W30) it was ok, and next day when we start the engine we heard a loud ticking noise. When accelerating and reach approximately approx. 50 miles/hour the noise is less noticeable. The noise is louder when the engine is cold and it is less noticeable with warm engine and hires speed. Do you have find out what caused that or any idea what that can be or caused that noise? Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you

  • I had a sound like this in my 98 grand Cherokee, it ended up being the water pump hitting something. Maybe that?

  • Did you actually resolve this? It sounds like a leaky exhaust manifold or gasket. I'm familiar with the sound. You can hear it puffing a bit. It's also consistent with your observation that the sound comes from the manifold area.

  • Bad lifter

  • sounds like my jeep so after I pulled the moter I had 3 piston broken and 3 had small cracks so new piston's same rings thou ran just like new still driveing it been over a year now

  • Sounds like a manifold leak.

  • bad hydraulic lifter

  • sounds like a bad lifter to me

  • My friend this sound is a piston broken neet be reemplace at ones

  • IMHO either timing belt slap or a bad piston.

  • sounds like a misfire... my car would make this but i went through and changed the spark plugs AND wires. then ran like a champ :)

  • A piston skirt noise will not go away after warm up. Most likely it is your pressure plate. (youtube it)

  • your piston skirt broke just fixed mine its exactly what happend to me remove the injectors one at a time and youll know wich one it is but only one at a time waiting will damage the cylinder it will cost two hundred dollars and you need to find the piston letter of the one thats broken to order it it is on the side of the block its not hard to change if you have someone whos in mechanics or you can do it yourself but will run fine untill it blows up otherwise

  • lifters.

  • i just had the same problem with mine, it was the water pump, trust me. it will run the same temp, but the bearings are goin out on the pump

  • since all of u seem like u kno wut ur talking about ......ive had a lower end knock in my car since i bought it not as loud as this one....anyways someone told me i had spun a bearing...but since i have been driving it for like 20 000 miles i rly doubt it....i thought the motor would go to complete shit after around 1000 miles

  • Can you replace the piston skirt? I have the same jeep doing the same shit is it fixable or a throw away

  • Broken Piston Skirt.

    I had the same problem.

Mine drives good and strong too.

Keep driving it, and the rod will go.

  • I have a 4.0 inline 6 with a very similar situation. Revved up to around 1800-2000 rpms and the knock can go away.

I pulled off the oil pan, only to find that I had a broken piston skirt (the lower end of the piston) and the knock is coming from a rod hitting.

I have power and the car still runs and drives great (beside that sound, and the fact that if you drive it more without fixing the piston, then you end up throwing the rod)

The description you give about where the sound seems same.

  • Sounds like it had the problem the one I bought had. I bought an 02 durango with a 4.7 L engine in it making that noise (bought it reduced for that reason). Pulled it apart and found that part of a piston had broken off. It had already been ejected, but it spun and pretty much ate the bearing. I have pictures of it. The sound you are hearing is probably the connecting rod hitting the crank because of a lost bearing. I imagine they use the same or similar pistons for the 4L.

  • @StrainingDingelberry Dont put a water pump on untill you take off the front belt! When you take off the belt, if the knocking is the water pump, the noise should go away!

  • My xj does it. It just started doing it one day. I'm putting a water pump on I think that's why mines doing it but mines not quite as loud as urs

  • Right I have found out (at last!) what has been making this knocking sound!! Top points goes to the very helpful people that said it was piston related! 'the piston in CL (6) Had dropped its shirt. Bits of metalic nightmares found in the oil in the sump. There would of been extra points if you also said it was the 'big end' because we have a real Fred Flintstone wonna-bee car here! It couldn't just of died from a piston going, thats not enough! Big end as well.

  • @stu2coats what does that mean and how do you fix it?

  • could be a cracked flexplate this is very common with this motor.

  • @lshorty602487 mine does have a noticeble knock at idle but as soon as it warms up it disappear .my engine has 202.000. kilometers .hope it won t get worse..

  • either rod or valve lifter knock, either way its metal banging metal and will eventually fail or get worse. the knock probably goes out when you hit higher revs only because it becomes so frequent you cannot determine knock vs. noise, its still knocking, just cant hear it at that frequency

  • time to replace your lifters my 4.0 did that same thing replaced them fine now

  • I have a 4.7 V8 jeep but its making the same noise. not as loud tho....I think its gunk build up in the oil pump. Mine has been sitting for two years with the timing cover off. I pulled the valve covers and i found 5 loose rocker arms. said to be caused by low oil pressure. Anybody know how to clean the oil pump without having to pull it. maybe a treatment ? please let me know

  • @93lilrock did you find a way to clean oil pump?

  • What happens next...my 98 jeep wrangler sport 4.0 did the same thing. As I was driving to the garage, something came a loose, perhaps, piston and engine blew up. (white smoke pouring out of the back) I assure you, you don't won't to reve it up as much or drive it further than you have to. Unless you have tools to work on hydro lifters and linkages, get it to the garage. They may be able to salvage your engine. I am now having to change my engine..best wishes.

  • the sound like hydro lifter, I have same problem 8 months ago and I replace the hydrolic lifter all new hydrolic lifter, till now no problem. remove the engine cover and you C the hydrolic lifter...change everything so make balance

  • WHAT I WOULD SUGGEST IS GO OUT AND BUY A BMW 325 LIKE ME! NEVER LOOKED BACK. THANKS FOR ALL YOUR COMMENTS THO :p JUST WISH PEOPLE WOULD READ PREVIOUS COMMENTS BEFORE ADDING A "I KNOW WHAT ITS IS" SMART BOLLOX LINE.

  • WHAT WE DONE TO FIND THIS OUT WAS, WE TOOK THE SUMP OFF, AND IN THE SUMP WAS SMALL METALLIC BITS OF BASTARD METAL. THIS = BROKEN JEEP SELL IT FAST TO A MECHANIC OR SOMEONE THAT WANTED TO TAKE THE WORK ON.

  • BRILLIANT! I THE NOW EX OWNER OF THIS JEEP DID FIND OUT WHAT IT WAS, AS I HAVE STATED IN THE PREVIOUS COMMENTS! ALTH THE COMMENTS ON THIS VIDEO ARE LIMITED, PEOPLE STILL INSIST ON NOT CHECKING ALL OF THEM WHEN THEY ARE LOOKING FOR THE CAUSE OF THE NOISE ON THERE OWN JEEP. THIS LEADS ME TO THINK THESE SAID PEOPLE ARE NOT LOOKING TO HARD INTO THERE OWN ISSUE TO NOT CHECK ALL THE COMMENTS. HERE IT IS PROBABLY NOT FOR THE LAST TIME

! IT WAS A BROKEN PISTON SHIRT! IN THE 6TH CYLINDER.

  • its very comon

  • ive done a fair few

  • na man thats definatly a worn cam shaft and lifter

  • my 98 zj has that same exact thing and as the engine warms up it gets quiter but is still there, i took it to a mechanic friend of mine who said it was one of the lifters and he said that the engine could blow a piston today or in a couple years, so im taking my chances

  • either a you dropped a valve or you need a new oil pump

  • my guess is that it is your fan clutch...look and see if its is loose and bouncing aroudn!!

  • that's your lifters one is stuck and push rod is hitting the bottom the higher the RPMs the more oil you put around that lifter there are some products out there that you can try but it best to replace them and if was a piston you would have a lope in the engine check the lifters if you busted a piston you would know it that not that load

  • That's the "Wrist" Pin in cyl #2 slapping back and forth (in mine it was). I took the whole motor out, gonna try and just replace the piston, wrist pin and rod/bearing. Sux!

  • i think that this is broken piston

  • Sounds like it is under the valve cover.... And that sound makes me want to cry.

  • tengo el mismo problema con mi grand cherokee limited 2001.

el mecanico me dijo que tiene un piston roto,la unica solotion es cambiar el motor oh cambiarle el piston..suerte

  • I've had this happen twice, once it was a king pin. The second time it turned out that one of the wires came loose and was rubbing up against a moving part.

  • Comment removed

  • This type doesnt have a time chain. It is just gear only. I pulled my engine due to the same knock and it is a king pin. Marvel mystry oil is a joke and dont wast your time. Sure did fool me. I thought for sure it was a lifter. Which i also found when breaking it down you half to remove the whole head to change lifters. Might as well do a complete rebuild if you have lots of miles. My motor just had 255k. Jeep is getting a new heart and hope to last me 225k more

  • check for cracks on intake valve tubing under manifold

  • So did you find the problem? Mine is making the same noise and is driving me crazy.....

  • @bterry0312

turned out the noise from my jeep 4.0 was a broken/cracked piston skirt. my hunt for an answer is over.

  • @53646453 I had the same issue did you rebuild the motor?

  • @watso64 i bought a jasper replacement engine and had it installed. engine cost ~$2000

  • So what was the problem? I have the same noise on my jeep!

  • It's valve train related, because it's making the noise twice as fast as each cylinder is firing, since the valvetrain itself operates at twice crankshaft speed. I would suspect a lifter, rocker arm or maybe timing chain issue.

  • @WhoSaidTyler

I agree with the conclusion - i.e. lifter, rocker, timimg chain - but the camshaft rotates at half the speed of the crankshaft. The noise is slower than the crankshaft speed which is around 10 revs per second (600 RPM idle)

  • @53646453 how in the world did I get that wrong, must have been up too late!. Thanks for the correction...

  • @WhoSaidTyler

no problem - i just need to figure out what's going on with my jeep - it makes a very similar sound but have read all kinds of posts and listened to a number of videos. one video had a noise similar to this and was found to be a broken piston skirt?

  • Look at the Exhaust manifold. Some times they will click like that when they crack or loosen. Hard to tell by just hearing the vid. Good luck!!

  • nomorestalkers*

I hope not mate! I just ran here down the road for ten minutes got up to 40mph and the noise started to ease up! now its only making half the noise it was before!!

I've almost had enough of this, im hearing banging in the night now! slowly going mad.

  • @stuy2coats12345

i have exactly the same noise on my 2000 grand cherokee 4.0 - as far as i can tell from the video. i have removed the valve cover and inspected rocker arms etc. and all looked fine. i'm interested if you've discovered the cause.

  • @stuy2coats12345

i'm thinking it may be the timing chain on my jeep

  • @stuy2coats12345... Was it your Lifters? I own a 1991 Jeep Cherokee and when it worms up it ticks because i have a lifter. But when i start it up when its cold it does not do it.

  • I've just ran it down the road for ten minutes and the noise has eased up by 50%. this noise is making no sense to me. also when i get up to 40 MPH the noise goes away almost. just leaving a little rattle.

Well its now only producing half the noise it was before so any answers!!?

  • might be spun bearings

  • check to make sure your rockes studs havn't lifted up any. it could mean your lifter is out of place

  • Yeah I wish it was the water pump! I've checked that out. no joy there....

Thanks for your input tho. (0:

  • i think your water pump is about to go out... check for play in your fan.

  • i think your water pump is about to go out...

  • OOOOO nice Engine ;)

  • Also I just wanted to add that when the revs go up to around 2000rpm, the 'knocking' fades out, but not completely.
