I was stationed at Nellis in 73-77 with 474th TFW 429th TFS F-111A. We would always get a good mix of A/C from other bases. F-105's from George, F-15's from Luke, all kinds of F-4's, A-7's, F-111's from Cannon and Mountain home. I worked swing and mid and saw lots of night launches. The best were the old century series with single stage afterburner. The noise would echo through the hangers. It would sound like a bomb going off!
@mgibbs88 I assume they could do it without them, but with with a full fuel load, they would use a TON of runway. Full aug more than doubles the dry thrust, and they use about 5-6k? of the runway before nose up. And that's without any weapons on board ( I work at depot for this aircraft )
very cool! I been by there many a times...I lived in San Diego for 12 yrs. I added ya as a friend,. I have some WWII aircraft videos posted here. Though I'm currently at my other channel. (northwestvideos) And I have a San Diego channel coming up soon. Visited when I was in Portland OR. take care...will be back to view more!
@SkyHawk024 Ok now you are just making me jealous. we don't get many airshows over here in AUSTRALIA The Aussie airforce doesn't have the same sort of presence in everyday life here as the US forces do. Maybe because our military is so much smaller. There is only 21 million of us and over 300 million in the states population.
Those afterburners are a beautiful sight!

It looks cool but is it necessary with the wings unswept and the flaps down to use the afterburners on take off?

@mgibbs88 I'm not sure they're running the afterburners, it may just be bright MIL power exhaust showing up bright at night.

I got to watch one take off right above me by about 200' at the end of a runway - breathtaking!

@scoobysmith44 And deafening. Even from behind the glass where I sit in Dyess Tower, they're insanely loud.

How long do they keep the burners on for? It seems a bit excessive.
