This show was awesome. Too bad they couldn't do a crossover with Star Trek. Starfleet and the Earth Defense Force vs. the Comet Empire and the Borg. Now that would be a battle!
Star Blazers was and is the best written animated series that was ever created. It had a appeal to both kids and adults. The first episode I ever watched was this very episode and not even understanding all that lead up to this, I knew it was something special. When I saw the entire first and second seasons, I was hooked for life! The second season's animation was crisper but the storyline just as powerful. Excellent character development and stories!
The scene where the Argo comes out of the sea, chases the Comet Empire, and all of her fighters falling in behind her still gives me goosebumps to this day!!! Earth was all but beaten and the Star Force came back to make a last ditch stand for our survival! If any fans watched all the episodes that lead up to this can understand why it was so moving, then you know why it WAS so powerful! Plus with the orchestra score it made the moment even more gripping! Best anime series of ALL TIME!!!
I'm surprised the High Command wasn't launching nuclear warheads at the Comet Empire, especially when that huge dreadnaught came out of the wreckage. One or two nukes could've destroyed it. Then again, maybe nuclear weapons were banned by this time.
" this is treachery of the worst kind" for all of Yoshinobu Nishizaki's anti americanism he chooses to ignore japan's role in it's own near destruction: Japan attacked while negotiating a peace treaty and had they negotiated a genuine peace the bombs would never have been dropped. you might say that the bombs were japan's national karma for it's own aggression on the US and it's own war crimes and it's inhumanities during it's war with the russians. karma's a BITCH.
This looks good. I should watch from the beginning because I don't know what's going on. But LOL of course the villains would have faux-Russian accents. >.<
Thanks for this. So "Royster" got killed in the attack...that was cut out in the US version. And the resulting editing job was a bit awkward, where Sandor says he found the weak spot, twice
@rabidduckling22675 Actually, that's incorrect! Space Battleship Yamato first aired in the US in 1979 as Star Blazers, while Robotech started its run in 1985.
@rabidduckling22675 Incorrect. Gigantor, Astro-Boy, Kimba, the White Lion, Speed Racer, and Marine Boy were brought over a decade before Star Blazers and BotP and long before Robotech: The Macross Saga.
@dngillikin That may be true. However, Star Blazers was the most recognized when it was aired. Shortly after Star Trek this came out in America. And that was when people were just getting big into the idea of Space Battles and Adventures.
@Wildstar100 Ten years after Star Trek (1966-69), four years after the Star Trek animated series (1973-75). Like a number of programs developed or brought over ca. 1978-79, Star Blazers was meant to cash in on the success of Star Wars (1977).
After all this time, watching this still gives me this intense excitement, as if I was still 10 years old running home from school to watch it on Fox25. Thank God for the internet!!
AGREED! I used to watch this during my teens in the early 80s in Delaware. I couldn't wait to get home to see the next episode. Still very exciting, definitely.
It is better to watch the Japanese subtitled versions as they are not edited for the English TV version. You miss a lot of detail in the English versions and a lot of the story too.
came out in japan in the mid/late 70's. aired in the us starting in the early 80's.....i have to say again, i've said it on other starblazers videos.....but wildstars assault here at the start is a brilliant tatical move....use the black tigers to attack from above while the argo is submerged and the comet empire doesnt exepect them to hit them there
zordar makes a comment early here that makes you wonder if he lived if he'd go after desslock "what made the starforce attack us there?"
There needs to be a SB drinking game: Any time anybody picks up a reference that was lifted from SB or SBY that nobody else gets & was used by Trek or SW or ID or that stupid Bruce Willis asteroid movie, well, everyone else takes a shot if they miss it.
I'm not so much into Speed Racer now, but it was my introduction to anime in the '70s.
Star Blazers had some pretty sophisticated plotlines. It was always a very "grown-up" show. Even though the translations weren't always great I was always taken in by the plots and themes.
I don't know so much about Trek but I know Lucas was a HUGE fan of Japanese cinema and it's sorta hard not to see how much he borrowed from SB/SBY for his epic saga...
@rainrunner1 actually, the Death star was seen before the Comet empire city, so the two are just a coincidence. Star wars came out while Comet Empire was being written.
@Soundwave3591 That probably was a coincidence but I think that I was referring more to the similarities of Skywalker with Wildstar's character & more from the first series, orphaned young man looking for his place, reckless, wanting for some payback to the enemy. etc..
But specifically I was thinking of the Enterprise ramming the enemy ship as a last option and then boarding it. Much like the Argo/ Yamato Rammed Desslok's flagship.
First , earth has no more defences, Yamato(Starforce) would be heros on a world scale.Second, if the governing body of Earth tried to imprison them ,they'd probable go Desslok on their asses. I know I would.
"The Earth has surrendered to the Comet Empire." Those are the first words we hear in this episode. But wait-- doesn't that make Wildstar's entire attack a treasonous act? All right-- so he DID destroy the Empire's mothership, but it's still treason. Still waiting for Episode 27- Wildstar's Court-Martial. Too bad anime doesn't lend itself well to courtroom drama.
i think earth only surrendered because they though the star force was destroyed with the andromada at saturn. in episode 22 while the president is giving the "we have to survive for our childrens future" the commander is thinking to himself "if the star force had survived, maybe....." also an attack by the argo was not unexpected, either by zordar or desslock......zoarder deliberitly put desslock and his fleet in a blocking position in case the argo had survived. invidias comments about deslock
When Argo emerges and the Black Tigers form around her...it's just one of the most beautiful images I've ever seen. I know it sounds stupid but the picture of this suddenly tiny-seeming warship and her fighters chasing the hulk of the Comet Empire back into space just has an effect on me : "We're going up!" "No. You're going down." MY commentary.
AWESOME!! I got goose bumps. What a Blast fron the past. You tube rocks, I found G-Force (Battle of the Planets) on here to. I was under the impression that i was watching this in the late 70's Does anyone know when it came out?

I used to get so frustrated with "anime purest"
who've never heard of SB. Giving Speed Racer all the credit for bring Anime to the U.S.
And also not understanding or believing how much Lucas and Trek have borrowed from it and taken credit for.
