I could not agree more with Vladiator 100 his best years we never saw because the Govt removed them, when he came back in the 1970's he had to change his fighting style after Shavers he could have retired with an amazing record his last 4 fight 2 with Spink, 1 holmes 1 Berbeck that was not Ali that we knew fighting. He is the best boxing heavyweight I have seen.
I know he had a lazy third fight against Norton but please if you want the title you have to take it from the champ .... Norton

But yeah his last "near his prime performance" was in Manila. After that his health and ability declined a lot.
Ali was a thing of boxing beauty in the ring. The ropes kept Lyle up at least 3 times in the 11th round & I agree his bravery might have cost him his life had the ref not stopped the fight. But Lyle was good at staying up on his feet while hurt, if u look at his fight vs Foreman the ropes kept Lyle up while he was defenseless & out on his feet in the corner & Foreman just pounded away at him b4 he finally went down. Foreman hit him with so many devastating punches its a miracle he wasn't killed

He was motioning Ali to a Neutral Corner, then Ali raised his hands, so the ref went along with it and gave Ali the fight. Take your eyes off of Ali for a moment and watch the ref's actions and you'll see what I mean. He didn't intend to stop the fight, he was going to give a stnding 8. Assuming this was a 2 point round for Ali if Lyle had survived it the cards would've read: 53-48 Lyle , 50-49 and 51-49 Ali. The only truly questionable aspect to this fight was not the stoppage, but Bill Kipp's score of 9-1 for Lyle after 10. Nothing much happened through those first ten rounds so one suspects that Kipp simply didn't like Ali. As for the TKO, it was standard issue.

Not a legitimate comparison. The fact that a fighter got up after a knock down and fought back in another fight does not mean he wasn't hurt more badly in this one. There are many cases when a fighter wasn't even knocked down in a brutal fight, but collapsed & died later from the effects of the punches. A defenseless fighter not punching back at all should never be allowed to continue, such as the case in this fight.
Foreman got boxing lessons and falling down lessons and the world saw it and proved his victory. I honestly do not understand why that stoppage was even remotely controversial. The guy hardly knew where he was, he was rubbery legged, he was not defending himself in the slightest manner, and was getting hit flush, most of the time you can see his head snapping back because those punches were landing so perfectly. This was a legit stoppage and anybody that knows anything about boxing knows that.

I'm not sure why Lyle objected to the fight being stopped. Ali threw at least 50 unanswered punches---hard to count them because of how fast he was throwing them, but it was at least 50. Many of them landed and some of them landed flush on Lyle's head. Lyle did not throw one punch in retaliation. The referee had no choice but to stop this---Lyle might not have been seriously hurt, but he wasn't fighting back and he was being hit in the head repeatedly. That's a recipe for disaster.
two judges had ali behind and the other card was even. i guess ali sensed that and that's why he exploded in the 11th. ali seemed bored in this fight. almost like he forgot that it was for his title. good thing he got serious before it was too late.

The music track you used has been so overrused...(I can't tell you how many times i've heard this particular music in a sport's clip) that it's cliche...the equivalent of "Stock Footage" that media outlets use. Also...i remember watching this fight on TV...before MTV and YOUTUBE. The music lends NOTHING. It's like jerking off all over a girlie magazine...it just stains the pictures and ruins it for the next guy who wants to look.

you cant hurt what you cant hit, & TYSON in his prime was extremely hard to hit.
TYSON only has trouble with movers & slick boxers such as HOLYFEILD, BUSTER, & LEWIS,
but a guy like LYLE will be tailor made for TYSON, because LYLE dont move, box, or hold, & TYSON would be able to hit him with maximum leverage of his punches, something like how he destroyed BERBICK.
styles makes the fights, & LYLE's style is perfect for a guy like TYSON to destroy

@razzz42 You are incorrect in your analysis. Actually, Ali was significantly behind on points leading up to the 11th round. He basically did nothing for the 1st 10 rounds. In the 11th, he hit Lyle with a flurry of punches that shook Lyle. Lyle was hurt, but he was still ahead on points! The ref gave the fight to Ali simply because he was Ali. This happened several times during the last 5 years of Ali's career. It's all about money. Ali was good box office, boxing didn't want him to lose.

@TheTweeter53 Actual cards were 1) Lyle 49-43 2) Lyle 46-45 3) 46-46. It was a 5 point must system. Assuming this was a 2 point round for Ali if Lyle had survived it the cards would've read: 53-48 Lyle , 50-49 and 51-49 Ali. The only truly questionable aspect to this fight was not the stoppage, but Bill Kipp's score of 9-1 for Lyle after 10. Nothing much happened through those first ten rounds so one suspects that Kipp simply didn't like Ali. As for the TKO, it was standard issue.

so the ref should have let ali hit him with another 50 shots before it would have been "ok" to stop it?

To me this fight(and ive seen the whole fight) proves Ali was destroyed by the Frazier fight in Manila.he was never remotely the same again.Ron Lyle put up a decent fight actually but Ali was still showed great ability

Not a legitimate comparison. The fact that a fighter got up after a knock down and fought back in another fight does not mean he wasn't hurt more badly in this one. There are many cases when a fighter wasn't even knocked down in a brutal fight, but collapsed & died later from the effects of the punches. A defenseless fighter not punching back at all should never be allowed to continue, such as the case in this fight.

This was on regular TV.I saw it and thought I've seen fighters knocked down twice in one round and they let the fight continue.Referee must have been scared becuse Ali was losing.They cheated Jimmy Young out of a clear cut decision over Ali on regular TV.His loss to Norton was a split decision(one judge was cheating.They gave Ali the decision over Norton in a rematch(another cheat) and Liston took a dive in "65.I don't trust what happened in Zaire,either against George Foreman.Zaire is no more.

I honestly do not understand why that stoppage was even remotely controversial. The guy hardly knew where he was, he was rubbery legged, he was not defending himself in the slightest manner, and was getting hit flush, most of the time you can see his head snapping back because those punches were landing so perfectly. This was a legit stoppage and anybody that knows anything about boxing knows that.

I'm not sure why Lyle objected to the fight being stopped. Ali threw at least 50 unanswered punches---hard to count them because of how fast he was throwing them, but it was at least 50. Many of them landed and some of them landed flush on Lyle's head. Lyle did not throw one punch in retaliation. The referee had no choice but to stop this---Lyle might not have been seriously hurt, but he wasn't fighting back and he was being hit in the head repeatedly. That's a recipe for disaster.
