I'm not a rome total war expert (far from it), but what's the use of archers on the battlefield besides shooting the other guys archers? they don't work on phalanxes and usually don't do much damage to the cav either

With 4-6 of them you can easily take down phalanx units and cavalry.

The continual fire of arrows with hurt their morale, if I'm sure.

They are mainly used for taking out archers and in the late game where archers do the most damage.
