I think you're doing well, but think one thing, if we have the benefit of the 3rd dimension, why cling to that look 2D? And I'm developing a 3d pokemon game for PC too, I'm redrawing the maps in a way that does not get it very flat and not give away much of how they are (I'm basing on the maps of anime and etc).
