I have a picture of one of these beauties fitted with a 75mm. The caption claimed that they could give T34's and Ronson's a rather nasty shock. Was this a one off, or did the 75 become a regular fitment.
234/4 was a production model but in small numbers ( mainly "secondhand" pak 40's brought back for repairs were fitted as german industrys could cope with production due to bombing). a T34 would have been hell to hit with its limited traverse, but could be overcommed by its manouverbility in theory. In short it was quick, well armed But Germany could never make enough.
Once again I find the comments pages covered in the same old rubbish from the pro-German enthusiasts. Yes, the Puma had a 50mm gun and was a great vehicle etc, etc...but: The German Recce units were organised fundamentally DIFFERENTLY from Allied counterparts. The Germans were equipped and organised to FIGHT for intelligence that the Allied units would obtain through more stealthy means. Also, the 8x8 vehicles still had poor X-country mobility compared to fully tracked vehicles.
some people maybe think it has only a weak gun and poor armor. But you have to notice, that most Allied tanks had also very thin armor. The Puma could even kill a Sherman from all sides at distance of 1,200 meters though it was only a armored reconnaissance vehicle. Also the Puma was very fast up to 85 km/h (!!!!) I reminds of a eight-wheeled amphibious armored personnel carrier (APC) used by the United States Army and the Puma was one of the first kind of these vehicles!
beautiful badass beast on 8 wheels, germans know how to build great machines, german ww2 armour looks so infernal, nice, like tiger, tiger B,sturm tiger and projects maus and on paper ratte
Awesome vehicle and it would have been more effective during the Battle of the Bulge than the slow heavy Tiger II tanks. The Germans needed speed and would have been better off with the Puma and Panther tanks leading the charge.
they did have the Panther available in numbers for "Watch am Rhein." The real issue more than anything else was the lack of fuel. Peiper had to ditch his vehicles because he ran out of gas...
the song at the beginning of the video ( 0-15 seconds) is called "Vom Barette schwankt die Feder" and you can find it as well in you tube under this name....
Yeah, that´d be the Luchs. Amphibious, very silent 390hp engine and armed with a 20mm autocannon. Was the main armored recon vehicle for the Bundeswehr since 1975 and is now getting partially replaced by the Fennek.
na ja der fennek sieht aus wie ein grün gespritzes pimp auto ala hollywood stars. wenn rapper den kaufen werden is alles klar;) ne ich mein kein spähpanzer meine so ein richtigen wie den puma. mit kanone
The "Leopard" project started in 1937 as the Henschel & Porsche was given the task of build the medium tank to replace the PzKpfw IV. The Tiger in some light can be seen as the evolvement of the Leopard project. The Wehrmachts Leopard however is not same battle tank as the Bundeswehrs Leopard: they share only the common predator name.
Since 1941, plans were made for the development of a new reconnaisance tank based on PzKpfw II Ausf J (VK 1601). In March of 1942, MIAG and Daimler-Benz received orders to build a fast (medium/heavy) reconnaisance tank, designed to operate under heavy combat conditions - Gefechtsaufklarung. MIAG was to construct the chassis, while Daimler-Benz was construct the turret.
Both were to be designed and ready for production by October of 1942.The main purpose of this vehicle was to be at HQ tank platoons in Panzer units. Two versions were proposed, "Leopard (leicht)" lightly armored fast version (18ton) and "Leopard (schwer)" heavily armored one (26ton). The light version was quickly dropped in the Summer of 1942, in favour of the heavier one
I always loved the style of this vehicle. You would think that in numbers it would make a cheap, easy-to-maintain tank. But why 8 wheels in rigid body? Was there some advantage to this?
I use to have a model of the SdKfz 232, in which the wheel base is basically the same as the Puma, the decals I used are those of the 21st Pz Div in the Afrika Korp.
a lot of the German tanks used gasoline engines, the idea being for blitzkrieg they could literally pull up to a captured civilian gas station and fill up beside your vehicle. I saw pictures of this from the Anschluss in 1938
Well, PUMA for me is one of the most beautiful vehicles ever built during WWII, a real mix of high technology and art design. I think it could be useful today in may armies for street fighting. I have one PUMA scale model 1/35 Dragon and when ones built a precision model can understand de complexity and engineering involved in developing a vehicle like that

The "Leopard" project started in 1937 as the Henschel & Porsche was given the task of build the medium tank to replace the PzKpfw IV. Only few prototypes were but as it never entered the production as the project was canceled due the "Tiger" appearance in 1942. The Wehrmachts Leopard however is not same battle tank as the Bundeswehrs Leopard: they share only the common predator name.
