I came across this song the other night while driving home. I was just flippin stations when I just gave up and left it on this song. As I was listening, I sensed something powerful in the music. I KNEW this music.Listen closely, you will hear hints of every song the group would be making in the future BUT even the group had no idea that each chord they played were pieces of their future hits. It was an eerie feeling. Then......It hit me; THIS IS ACTUAL RECORDING OF THE BIRTH OF LED ZEPPELIN.
@Tecumseh1812 i don't know if his personality would have matched with the band, or if they would have ever reached their "godlike" status with a 5'4" little guy like steve.
but don't get me wrong it gives me chills just to think about it.
i think part of the magic of LZ though is that it was only page on guitar, instead of like... robert playing rhythm.
Officially the group were still known as The Yardbirds,I remember a pop newspaper report at he time ,saying a group of Yardbirds helping out P.J.Proby for some recordings. Pretty sure its all around the same period they got involved in the Amory Kane LP.Great up load though, had forgotten all about this, nice pics used as well, good job.
Damn, what luck Proby had that Page and JPJ were at first renowned session musicians and would do this. Little did Proby know that these session artists would become the greatest band of all time.
I know they were Zeppelin/The New Yardbirds at the time, but, JPJ and Jimmy were nonetheless renowned for session work. You could kinda call this "The members of Led Zeppelin doing one last final session."
Recorded in late August or early September of 1968, Robert Plant (on harmonica), Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and John Bonham performed as backing band on the P J Proby album 'Three Week Hero'.
They were known at that stage as The New Yardbirds and it was their first time together in a studio. On September 7, they performed live together for the first time in Gladsaxe, Denmark. By the end of the month, as Led Zeppelin, they recorded their first album, 'Led Zeppelin'.
You guys realize this sounds a lot like You Shook Me? I think it's the same exact bass line. The drums aren't far off, either, nor is the harmonica. Am I the only one to realize this? But really it's not surprising, because prior comments say this is EARLY Zep, and You Shook Me was released on Led Zeppelin I.
I only realized this cause I'm sittin here watching this video and halfway through I think to myself "Damn I really wanna pause this video and pull up iTunes to play You Shook Me really quick" and then it dawned on me
Don't know if anyone has noticed it yet, but this song starts out sounding a lot like that very blusy Elvis Presley, "Merry Christmas Baby" Now that's a song I'd really love to hear P.J. record for a Christmas Album or Single.
This record is written and sung by P.J. Proby in 1968 for his album Three Week Hero. Proby's real name is Jim (James Marcus Smith)! It's one of my favourites!
Proby's backing session musicians on this LP are the members of Led Zeppelin, when they were still unknown and called themselves the New Yardbirds.
GREAT bluesy rock track from jim and the Led Zeppelin guys.
THIS ROCKS, Jim (aka)PJ Proby can sing anything and is one of a very few singers EVER that can.
HOW MANY SINGERS CAN CHANGE THERE VOICE TO ANY STYLE BE IT..OPERATIC,BLUES,SOUL,ROCK,COUNTRY,MUSICAL NUMBERS AND BALLADS OR ANY OTHER STYLE YOU COULD THROW AT THEM. PJs THE BEST
in case ur wondering, NO, this is a recording made by LED ZEPPELIN, it was their first recording ever n to test their skills they recorded with pj proby, plant was send to play the harmonica but other than that, thats bonham, jone paul, jimmy n plant!!!
Ah, yes that's correct. I did a bit of research on the song after I saw your comment and found out that I was wrong all along >_> Thanks for telling me.

I think Steve Marriott is the only other vocalist beside Plant who would have been acceptable for the Zep.

Well there are COUNTLESS 12 bar blues tunes with this exact same feel, and You Shook Me is no exception. I Can't Quit You Babe could be another. ;)
