SON-OF-GUN; JUST MADE IT!!! In 1975 "Once You Get Started" peaked at No. 10 thus just making the Billboard's Top 10 and it spent a total of 13 weeks in the Hot Top 100...
This really makes you miss Mike Douglas. He put performers on, gave them time and space to perform (not just appear) and they PERFORMED! I see the chicken/egg debate here about CK and the band. I think it's clear the band doesn't get where it got without her.....but I neither am I so sure she gets where she is without them. True she really is a work of art....but the band (with all it's what? 30 or more members over the years) is much more than just a frame. This greatness was built together
@squiffydoodle known as "THE CHAKA SHAKE" , I've seen her do it alot and think her body is just doing what the inner groove says to do.......to this very day I still adore her, such inner beauty, one of a kind voice.
she did more for race relations in the 70's than all the so-called leaders have in the past 30 years..thanks sweetie
If the first group would have gone nowhere...why are their arrangements being
played basically note for note. Because the first band was the blueprint for the rest of the success.... Who was around when the band adjusted from Paulette to Chaka.....the 2nd version took alot from the first....I saw them every weekend a Dex Card's Wild Goose.....also saw Hawk while he was in Madura.
@sherriffofhongkong So why wasn't the fist lp with Paulette a sucess ! Also the only 2 songs you hear from RAGS is the Stevie Wonder penned SOMTHIN' GOOD & the CHAKA/RAY PARKER penned You Got The Love!
Chaka was and still is a CERTIFIED FOX!!! I was only 5 when this song came out and it still sounds good! Bring back REAL MUSIC, 12 inch albums, extended versions, Mom n Pop record shops, etc. I am so glad I grew up in the 70s and 80s! R.I.P. DJ "Chief Rocker" Frankie Crocker (WBLS NYC)...
In her prime, Chaka was gorgeous!!!! She was second to NONE!!! And a talent, surely sent from above. And she was like fine wine --- only got better with age.
I had the pleasure to see Rufus & Chaka Khan in the 70's. It was so awesome. Not many female singers these days that could be in the same category with Chaka.
Oh my merciful heavens! This was the Mike Douglas Show in Cleveland, all live and not prerecorded! I remember this so well because Rufus played in Youngstown the next night and I could not get tickets. Devastated, I went to see the Lawrence Brothers at the Y-Town Tomorrow Club instead, Around midnite I went to the ladies' room to check my makeup and WHO should step out of a stall but Ms Chaka! SHE WAS SO BEAUTIFUL I was speechless! She asked to use my lip gloss; 36 yrs later I still have it!
When you combine a great band with a great singer and backup,Tony Maiden, you get the hits that Rufus F/Chaka produced. Once they split, this pinnacle of funk was never reached again
Rufus did Seal in red with Patti Austin doing back round vocals and Numbers where they tried another female vocalist named Maxayn Lewis who did a song called "Are We". Well I know. Who? I listened to it and it just was not Chaka but was made for her and well I just could only play it but once are twice. Like making love to someone but picturing someone else. Still waiting for reunion lp with the Icon.

All Is Not Lost Though!!! Chaka Has A Protege A I (Asian/Italian) Who Is Keeping Soul & Talent Alive!!! Check Her Video Out With Chaka-One More Try!!! Y'all Go Up!!!
All I can say is both Chaka and Rufus were never better than when together. As a band, they are one of the greatest of all time. Superior songwriting, arrangements, lyrics and both vocal and instrumental virtuosity, tastefulness and pure funk make them stand up against anybody. Thank you Rufus and Chaka and the Most High for blessing us with a beacon of human excellence to help light our way in this life. Ashe.
@davidgoodlettmusic I have to agree!!! I Think some of her best work was with Rufus!!! This was because there was a lot of conflict in this group that's why muscians came & went!!!But that conflict created great music!!!Chaka hated a lot of the music they had her sing but I'm glad they made her sing it!!! Lol!!! They say "Art Is Born Of Pain" So I'm glad Rufus tortured Chaka cause they produced some great art!!!
Puuuuuhhhhleeeeese...leave the competitive shit out of it.......RUFUS WERE A GR8 BAND...the band is the sum of its parts.......and will continue to funk 4 eva
Quit the moaning, Chaka Khan and Rufus gelled, she had the upper range pinned down, Rufus laid down the foundation with their mean grooves to balance her mean as vocal rifts that are now part of our beautiful history of R'n'B. Didn't like her later stuff as much when she went solo, but it's good to feel young again when I hear her and Rufus...
Actually the real stars were Tony Maiden, Bobby Watson, Kevin Murphy and Andre Fisher, one of the best four piece funk rhythm sections in pop history. Chaka Khan was just lucky enough to be the singer at the time, and rose to fame mainly thanks to their awesome grooves.
@lumbarsupport Actually there was only one STAR - CHAKA KHAN ! The band members were lucky enough to have CHAKA out front ! That's why the 1st group with Paulette McWilliams ( 2 singles ) went nowhere ! Not to mention the band members that came & went ! Remember Ron Stockert, Dennis Belfield, Paulette McWilliams, Nate Morgan, William "Moon" Calhoun, Al Ciner, Lee Graziano, John "J.R." Robinson. Without her voice no one would have ever heard of RUFUS !
@lumbarsupport If Chaka was not there Stevie wouldn't have wrote "Tell Me Something Good" and the band would have never had their big break....Oh and Chaka also helped Stevie write the song.
I'm glad you corrected this post I was about to jump through the U Tube. Rufus was a GROUP of incredible musicians. Tony Maiden is the most underrated guitarist in popular music but Chaka is the QUEEN of Funk.
@lumbarsupport LAMO!!! If That's The Case Why Didn't They Get Hits With Paulette!!! Or Blow Up Post Khan? Now I believe their sounds complimented each other & being with them was instrumental in molding Chaka into the legendary singer she is now!!! She got her funky chops with them!!! Rufus definitely benefited more & that's why after their debut album it wasn't just "Rufus" anymore-It was "Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan"!!! I even remember back in the day they were calling Chaka "Rufus!!! Lol!!!
@lumbarsupport Awesome and talented band indeed. But if it wasn't for that that little powerhouse name Chaka Khan and her amazing vocals, I think the success of Rufus would have been limited. So I agree with Blaquemuscle...Rufus was lucky to have found Chaka!
@lumbarsupport wow nobody ever heard of this band , they were nobodies, fortunate to have a star singing with them . Chaka Khan would have done it with or without them buddy !!!!!!!!!!
@MANMAD1 lol love your assumption here, b/c the former lead singer of rufus is the reason she got with the band. it takes two to tango and i dont beleive chaka would have had the same outcome without her band. singersneed bad bands to back them. i mean they also wrote songs togather. it was a TEAM effort not chaka all by herself. if you listen to her solo totally different sound. i do beleive if she was solo off thebat she would not have been doing music like this
@mjjcng8958. Ok, I agree 70 % with you, as a producer myself , I can relate. Artists are really as good as the team they are with and development is very important.
@MANMAD1 So why did the 1st group with Paulette McWilliams ( 2 singles ) went nowhere !
This was when music was good and they're singing live. I'm so glad I'm old school. I barely listen to the music,( if you want to call it that) these days
Very few legends have been born since we were grace with Chaka. We now have advanced into the media error where the focus is on the visual (videos). Chaka came along when raw talent, beauty mean't something.
I sure hope she was able to receive some of the millions and millons of dollars a lot of these "no talented" broads are receiving???
Whoever put Nikki Minaj's name in the same breath as Chaka Khan should stop getting high. The two don't belong in the same universe. Nikki Minaj will last about a year or two and we won't hear of her ever again. All of the talent from this generation is disposable.
@BLAQUEMUSCLE Bless u for this post, took me right back, and nikki, couldn't hold an umbrella to Chaka. Stop smoking children, this is real TALENT. Not fluttering my eyelashes asking if u like my silicone.
@BLAQUEMUSCLE Todays' talent need to realize that when you're hot, you're hot but, once the flame is out, honey we might not ever remember they were here, let alone the song they sang. There are some wonderful singers that made it & are still thriving. There are some who were'nt given their recognition at all. The music industry is very tricky & that's how it's always been.
The word "talent" should not be used in the same conversation with a vulgar, non-talented, boorish idiot like Nikki Minaj. Anyone whose performances are essentially on the same level as with nusery rhymes (only profane) can hardly be considered talented.
@ashastar i wish ppl would stop generalizing...not everyone in my generation (im 27) likes these talentless ppl...we talk about it all the time. nicki who? she makes me ill :p i think it's cause i grew up with an older mom so i grew up with stuff like this....and listening to whitney, old mariah, etc etc....but anyway, plz...not everyone that is young has no taste
She had (has) it all the looks, the moves, the voice, oh my, that voice. to say nothing of the band themselves. . . . Thank God we can still get to see it again. : )
@gigmom123 Didn't we though!!! She was so fresh & different!!! Well Like Natalie Cole says in Chaka's Bio on Lifetime "If we Could Bottle It,We'd All Be Sounding Like Chaka Khan"!!!
YOUTUBE never ceases to amaze me! Seriously folks, this is as "old-school" as it gets........Chaka & Rufus, on the Mike Douglas show........circa, 1974, My High School graduation year. Was Chaka a "fireball" or what?! Memories.......a very good time......a DAMN GOOD band!
Sorry,I ran out of time,I was talking about the Arp string odyssey synthesizer that makes these spacey sounds on Flora Purims' Open Your Eyes,You Can Fly album.
I also wanted to say that this video is proof of how fantastic R&B was in the 70s,when it was about musicianship and live bands,as opposed to today, when its about "beats" and stupidity.
@ISellAvon4u PLEASE..WELL THAN TINA SHIPPED BABY CHAKA TO BORDING SCHOOL BECAUSE MAMA TINA WAS SCURRED OF HER DAUGHTER'S VOICE....WOULD KNOCK MAMA'S ASS OUT!
Wow, thanks so much for posting this. Too bad the track is scorched in so many spots, glad I hung on the ending is worth waiting for. Chaka Khan sets the standard! Have seen them both perform around LA, they are still SO phenomenal! Had just seen them at Boston Garden with Stevie in '73!
Does any1 know if CK ever performed w/Sly Stone or recorded w/him back in the day. It doesn't seem possible , that much funkiness at 1 time ,in 1 place would cause some kind of explosion that would tranform the world forever into a much more soulful place. Chaka Khan singing w/The Family Stone in their prime would have changed the world forever.
@godhelpme2009 - I read that Chaka and Sly were contemplating making sweet music together but it never materialized.
Download Hot Fun In The Summertime by The Manhattan Transfer w/Chaka Khan. You will get what you are looking for with the funkness. That tune is super bad!
The talent nowadays just don't come close to the caliber that Chaka and the likes came from! This is a reminder of just how much our musical representations have DEgenerated! We are supposed to get better with every generation - not go backwards!
I just thank God that legendary singers like Chaka are still around for those of us who are discerning listeners!
Yep I want that Jacket now too to go wit my Chaka pants from back in da day..I bet if I put that outfit on now my fellow would chase me all over da house
@BigBlackRod That was hilarious. The saddest part is someone actually had the audacity to put Minaj & Chaka Khan in the same class. Chaka probably would have smacked anyone that compared her to whatever is out now lol. Thats like comparing a PH.D to a G.E.D. Chaka Khan was and forever uncomparable.
I recently changed the CD in my clock radio to the "RUFUSIZED" album so for the past week I've been I waking up to Chaka wailing "Aaaaah, oh, yeah, yeah". Who could press snooze after hearing that in your ears?

Whoever put Nikki Minaj's name in the same breath as Chaka Khan should stop getting high. The two don't belong in the same universe. Nikki Minaj will last about a year or two and we won't hear of her ever again. All of the talent from this generation is disposable.

@BLAQUEMUSCLE Bless u for this post, took me right back, and nikki, couldn't hold an umbrella to Chaka. Stop smoking children, this is real TALENT. Not fluttering my eyelashes asking if u like my silicone.

BLAQUEMUSCLE 1 year ago
@BLAQUEMUSCLE Todays' talent need to realize that when you're hot, you're hot but, once the flame is out, honey we might not ever remember they were here, let alone the song they sang. There are some wonderful singers that made it & are still thriving. There are some who were'nt given their recognition at all. The music industry is very tricky & that's how it's always been.

@ashastar You are 100,000,000,000 % on point.
grandpasun 1 year ago
@ashastar :
The word "talent" should not be used in the same conversation with a vulgar, non-talented, boorish idiot like Nikki Minaj. Anyone whose performances are essentially on the same level as with nusery rhymes (only profane) can hardly be considered talented.

@ashastar YA DAMN RIGHT!!!!!

@ashastar - I agree that Nicki is talentless, but it spooky how similar she looks to Chaka.
Modacolorist 1 year ago
@Modacolorist Really? I think Tanika Ray Looks more like Khan!!! Also the girl in Supa Nova's "She Looks Like Chaka Khan" Video!!!
TyjaluvsChaka 1 year ago
@ashastar i wish ppl would stop generalizing...not everyone in my generation (im 27) likes these talentless ppl...we talk about it all the time. nicki who? she makes me ill :p i think it's cause i grew up with an older mom so i grew up with stuff like this....and listening to whitney, old mariah, etc etc....but anyway, plz...not everyone that is young has no taste

I also wanted to say that this video is proof of how fantastic R&B was in the 70s,when it was about musicianship and live bands,as opposed to today, when its about "beats" and stupidity.
doodoochaser 1 year ago 3
I love those arp synthesizers, especially the one that sounds like they're in outer space...George Duke plays them on those 70s Flora Purims albums.

About his less than favorable article about Rufisized and this song.
Jim Miller was always a shit dickweed asshole writer critic.
Rolling Stone Magazine could have been more interesting without him.
He even wrote off James Brown as one of the greatest singers of all time. Jim Miller was a white mustached racist asshole pile of shit.

Does any1 know if CK ever performed w/Sly Stone or recorded w/him back in the day. It doesn't seem possible , that much funkiness at 1 time ,in 1 place would cause some kind of explosion that would tranform the world forever into a much more soulful place. Chaka Khan singing w/The Family Stone in their prime would have changed the world forever.
godhelpme2009 2 years ago

Amen! Not to mention, the "live" performance back then was actually LIVE, none of today's fakery. And Chaka is just soooo beautiful. :)
