I miss shows like this. Maybe I've just started down a journey of getting old, but it seems like today's shows talk down to kids, where shows like Shining Time Station had no need to bring something down to a child's level; they spoke to us on an ageless level, heart-to-heart. There were progressive elements like respecting Native American culture and recycling, traditional elements like folk music and railroad lore...this treats kids like real, whole people with a heritage and a future.
The theme for Shining Time Station was composed by Joe Raposo, who also composed the theme for Sesame Street and Three's Company. By the way, the STS theme was one of his final works, as he died of lymphoma on Sunday February 5, 1989, exactly one week after the first episode (this episode) aired on Sunday January 29, 1989.
Part 2 of this episode is blocked.
