Don't you need the publicity that these companies give you, along with your own set of lawyers to get the best deal for yourself. I'm pretty sure the artists I mention with exception of Beiber, owns their own music and does get royalties from it. I'm sure the Van Halen's have their own team of lawyers.

I am doing some research on the development of music in the times of Internet apps like Facebook, Twitter, I-Tunes and stuff. From what I've learned so far, the traditional music industry is in deep shit. I would like to see more artists follow the recommendations of Dick Dale. Maybe we could even get music back as an art form rather than being force fed with what seems mass compatible.

There is a thing in just about every record contract called "cross-collateralization," which basically is a kind of sharecropping arrangement that fucks artists all the way up his/her innards.

Gig your ass off, re-invest in yourself with what money you make (better equipment, advertising, transportation, etc). Remember, there are two components to the music business, music and business. Know them both as well as you can.

good advice, but there are smaller labels out there that aren't set up soley to exploit musicians. eg. Steve Vai's company. People like him actually give a shit about the musicians.

Also I'm sure if your savey enough, wise enough you'd be able to negotiate a deal with a larger company thats more in your long term interest. I guess the problem is most people just go all giddy when they see a big cheque and then just sign whatever the company puts in front of them.

It is great advice but very few musicians will follow it. They have no head or drive for the business and marketing side of the business. Marketing for many consists of getting a MySpace page and posting bulletins and comments largely to other musicians. To do what Dick Dale does requires discipline and tenacity. It isn't fun; it involves lots of rejection; and it still requires that your music and your live show be brilliant.

myspace is a good tool for people to use but they still have to go into the trenches and take some time and energy to make a name for yourself just posting a few bulletins and kicking back and doing nothing else after is not enough to really get your name out there and make you big
