If everyone did what Dick Dale said, there would be no Van Halen's, Genesis, Justin Beibers or Nicklebacks. Don't you need the publicity that these companies give you, along with your own set of lawyers to get the best deal for yourself. I'm pretty sure the artists I mention with exception of Beiber, owns their own music and does get royalties from it. I'm sure the Van Halen's have their own team of lawyers.
The 10 dislikes here are obviously from dipshits who think music labels save the day or are required to be successful, there is not a word of what Dick says that you can argue with.
I am doing some research on the development of music in the times of Internet apps like Facebook, Twitter, I-Tunes and stuff. From what I've learned so far, the traditional music industry is in deep shit. I would like to see more artists follow the recommendations of Dick Dale. Maybe we could even get music back as an art form rather than being force fed with what seems mass compatible.
Dick Dale is RIGHT ON THE FUCKING MONEY! Listen to what he says kids!
There is a thing in just about every record contract called "cross-collateralization," which basically is a kind of sharecropping arrangement that fucks artists all the way up his/her innards.
Gig your ass off, re-invest in yourself with what money you make (better equipment, advertising, transportation, etc). Remember, there are two components to the music business, music and business. Know them both as well as you can.
Dick is so right and has hit the nail on the head. All you young upcoming artists, take heed. He speaks the truth. Us older rockers learned the hard way. PEACE
A man after my own heart, This should be required listening for all artist's, new and old. Since there are still folks looking for a record deal out there. Many of us who know this info already have no sympathy for the current ailing state the music industry is in today. They deserve it!
Whatta freakin' cool ass cat! Thanks for the insight Dick. it's great to hear those honest words of wisdom coming from a such a great legendary musician.
Wise words from a true icon. I have "King of the surf guitar: the best of Dick Dale and his Del-Tones and I recommend it to anyone who doesn't have it yet. :o)#
A man after my own heart, thank you Dick Dale. Some of us have reason to have no sympathy for sickly state the industry is in today. You just explained why! I love you man.
A man after my own heart, they must hate Dick Dale Thank you for letting more folks know that the record companies don't deserve anything more the cancer they've created which is now their ultimate demise. But beware, there are still artists out there who are looking for a record deal! What deal?
This advice can go to anyone in business, not just music. If you sell out, you better have something that you're getting paid for NOW, and it better allow you and your whole family to retire. Excellent advice. Basically, "Don't be an idiot."
The best advise you could get for free. Dick tells it like it is. Pay attention & you will benefit from is wisdom & his experience. Plus he is the man when he plugs in his guitar.
good advice, but there are smaller labels out there that aren't set up soley to exploit musicians. eg. Steve Vai's company. People like him actually give a shit about the musicians.
Also I'm sure if your savey enough, wise enough you'd be able to negotiate a deal with a larger company thats more in your long term interest. I guess the problem is most people just go all giddy when they see a big cheque and then just sign whatever the company puts in front of them.
Fame. If u become real Famous they'll market you. Which is still bad cuz they're using ur fame but they will pay you Generously. just like he said, They pay u well upfront, but on a label they own ur shit, some how they scam musicians into doing shit that will just put them in debt with the label. happens ALOT, thats why Beatles and abunch of people started their own record label including Dick Dale. hope this breaks it down further.
i personally think he is better then hendrix. he didnt resrting his guitars like hendrix did he plays with the string reversed and has the most unique sound i have ever heard people can mimic hendrix it is hard to mimic dick dale.
dick was hendrix favorite guitar player hendrix used too watch his shows in balboa and would talk to him for hours after his shows and tried to learn from him
I have always wondered why a rock n roll founder and legend like Dick Dale has never been honored in the rock and roll hall of fame. Is the hall of fame controled by the big money record industry who see him as a real threat? Rock and roll hall of fame sucks.
Great advice for any musician. Young musicians, often with zero business experience, can't compete with professionals whose job it is to make as much money as possible. Right on Dick !
Fantatic advice, no-one waves a magic wand on your behalf, for no benefit to themselves. Wave your own!! I'm starting out and I'm using Dick's advice as my mantra!
good for you dick has over 50 years of experience first hand and has lived through all the record company bs personally he is a good person to take advice from on a music career
It is great advice but very few musicians will follow it. They have no head or drive for the business and marketing side of the business. Marketing for many consists of getting a MySpace page and posting bulletins and comments largely to other musicians. To do what Dick Dale does requires discipline and tenacity. It isn't fun; it involves lots of rejection; and it still requires that your music and your live show be brilliant.
myspace is a good tool for people to use but they still have to go into the trenches and take some time and energy to make a name for yourself just posting a few bulletins and kicking back and doing nothing else after is not enough to really get your name out there and make you big
MR.DICk DALE should have a gad-dang 100 foot tall MONUMENT TO HIM built somewhere in Los Angeles, Califorinia - near the ocean of course. Bigger than Mt. Rushmore! He's just that much of a GENIUS to the culture and what he's influenced. God Bless you Dick Dale. All of us are richer for your gifts. You are an American ORIGINAL and we LISTEN ALWAYS.
thanks so much for this clip. dick dale is the man.
i've come back here and watched this at least five times, and i've sent it to all my friends.

thanks to TheCanolliKid for posting this, and thanks to Dick Dale for being Dick Dale.
it is great advice and if you got screwed out of millions of dollars then wouldn't you be bitter too. Record companies ripping people off like that is why so many musitions end up broke and addicted to drugs and why people like Phil Spector are so rich because his money comes from musitions who have been totally ripped off
he knows exactly what he is talking about because he lived through is all and Dick and Elvis were close friends and in the 60's Dick signed A contract with Capitol records that actually broke Elvis's record for the largest music contract ever signed up to that point
If you want someone else to do the work for you, you're gonna have to pay. Intellectual property is one of the most valuable commodities on earth. Take pride in yours, and don't be afraid to seek out the financial comfort that you deserve. It takes talent, knowledge, and unrelenting tenacity to make it in any business.
I think this is good advice for anyone in any field of work - be independent and don't buy in to the pyramid scheme of big industry - because the guys at the top will get all the money - that's how it's set up
he doesn't come off as paranoid to me at all. Talk to some of the bands who have signed and been dumped from major labels. Even the big indy labels do the same bullshit now. He's being realistic. This guy has been in the business for 40+ years now, he knows what he's talking about.
he is not paranoid at all he has been playing for 52 years and broke Elvis Presleys record for the biggest musician contract at the time with Capitol Records and knows exactly how the system works
Excellent advice. These greedy jews in Hollywood (and elsewhere) care nothing for you. They won't stop until the middle class has been destroyed by cheap imported labor and you are forced to pay for every sight and sound around you.
Knock off the racist bullshit. Record companies exist to exploit artists. Isn't that enough to contend with without clouding your mind with ignorant generalizations? No war for planet earth.
