  • Very Grunge. I love AIC... pure Art, passion, and straight to your face.

  • Godamnit this song sends shivers up my spine. Everytime I listen to it I have to crank it as loud as my speakers can go. Such a great song that really expresses what Layne was feeling at this time.

  • Am I the only one that noticed Sean dropping his stick at 4:43?

  • At 2:30 you can see the look on his face of "oops". He left off the end of the line due to extending the "craaaaaaaaaazy", lol.

  • RIP LAYNE!!!!!! WE LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!! <3

  • love it when layne screams at the beginning, not heard that on any other vid, awesome!!!

  • one of the best live AIC vocal performances I've ever heard.

  • singers like this don´t exist anymore. destes ja nao se fazem

  • Sadly Layne sounds messed up at this show. He still gives it his all though. At the 02.02.1993 show he sounded like he was clean of drugs. Either way he put on some killer shows while alive. That is how I will remember him. That and the awesome records Chains put out.

  • Rock In Peace, RIP, Layne Staley!

  • Jerry Cantrell said that "Layne wrote a lot of music", and he made a whole record, but it never got released.

  • Okay, the debate between Layne's songs and Jerry's songs can end now. Layne can't write a song, because a song is lyrics and music. Layne was learning to play guitar on the tour for Alice in Chains (self-titled album), but never learned in time to really contribute. Layne needed Jerry's music and Jerry needed Layne's delivery. But Layne never wrote a song.

  • @Nicktube09 Layne wrote "Angry Chair" and "Hate To Feel" and "Head Creeps" and played guitar in the song "Brush Away" and he wrote "I Don't Know Anything" with Mad Season, and of course a lot of lyrics, harmonies and melodies for the vocals. and he also came up with the melodies and harmonies to some songs that Jerry had wrote, For an example Jerry wrote the song Would?, but Layne came up with the melodies for the lead vocals, It was Layne that made Jerry Cantrell step up and sing more.

  • @Nicktube09 that's weird. you can find lots of videos on youtube of Layne playing second guitar on gigs even from '92. guess again.

  • @Nicktube09 ya he did noob

  • @Nicktube09 I don't know how long you have been around but my advice would be to do your homework. Layne started out as a drummer, could play guitar well enough to use one to write music. He also played guitar live in concert on Angry Chair and Hate to Feel. Jerry has ever given interviews on Layne's song writing, in Jerry's words Layne was amazing.

  • my favorite alice in chains´song

  • first off all its i want to taste dirty stinging pissed off in my mouth on my tounge and fuck everyone for sayin jerry shit about jerry jerry made up alot of the lyrics anyone who bought the album would know that!

  • @tttttaylorx3 No, the lyrics are I want to taste dirty, stinging pistol, In my mouth, on my tongue. I want you to scrape me from the walls, And go crazy like you've made me.

The second part of the verse wouldn't make sense if it was "pissed off" and not "pistol"

  • ONE who doesn't care is one who shouldn't be..

  • @TheAlehandro9 haha I actually got that :D

  • Staley wrote more and more lyrics as time went on, eventually receiving credit for about half the lyrics from their entire catalog prior to the release of Black Gives Way to Blue in 2009

  • my fav song by them by far, it is that amazing!

  • Any fucking retarded willing to speak crap about Jerry is not an AIC fan, period

  • @blankko84 That's absolutely not true. I love what he contributed to AiC and I love the band. I just don't care for Jerry as a person, only a musician and an artist.

  • @Wesson4

So quit whining. Layne has been dead for almost nine years now and life moves on. Their new album beats most of the crap that is being produced to day. It's a brilliant album and Cantrell is worth all respect he can get. AIC is Cantrells biggest life project and i do not see any reason why he shall suffer the loss of not being able to continue his work with AIC, only because layne choosed the drugs.

  • @strixq Layne was a God. Jerry is a man. Period.

  • @Wesson4

However, your comments about cantrell is incredible stupid and inane. AIC not only consists of Layne they are actually three more old members were each one of them has contributed in their own skillfull way and who have put down a lot of efforts to be able to create one of the best rockband ever.

  • @Wesson4

"Cantrell has He has written or co-written every song in the Alice In Chains catalog except for "Queen of the Rodeo", "Hate to Feel", "Angry Chair", and "Head Creeps".

    4 Songs!?

Have no clue if this info is the correct because I wasn't present when they wrote their songs and no one else in this YouTube panel of expert, I assume.

  • Layne's lyrics are darker because of all the shit he was going through. so naturally they are going to seem better than jerry's. But to say Layne wrote better songs and Jerry sucks ass is just fucked up. Without Layne there would have not been AIC. Without Jerry there would not have been AIC. When them two collaborated together masterpieces were born. Each deserves there own credit but neither deserved to be thrown under the bus.

  • Who is the asshole who disliked this video? Where is he so I could kick him in the fucking balls?

  • ANY one who has fallowed AIC for a while knows that they never would have sold quadruple platnum from there biggest ap ,dirtt,if not for Layne ,I doubt if they would have sold half as many albums. However that said I do love most of the songs Jerry wrote....he is with out question the top one or two song writers to come out of seattle, even though he was not born there.

  • Awesome band live but I really think they came alive in the studio.

  • This my favorite AiC song, has got me through some rough times in my life...

That voice... it always haunts me

  • the guitar just fucked my face

  • @bojanks15 Ha, your a fuckin riot.

  • if you think layne didnt make alice in chains complete just listen from 32 seconds into this video

  • ai 33 secondi mi ricorda tanto cobain..

    RIP layne and kurt

  • lol dongs

  • this ain't grunge, man....this is seattle metal!!!!!

    long live layne!!

  • @rauchenfoofy - We callk it Rock `n` Roll up here in Seattle...

  • Why don't all of you SHUT THE FUCK UP and listen to some Alice in Chains without bitching and showing each other your cocks! Layne's dead, and the band after MANY YEARS decided to continue, with a great addition in William. He's not Layne, no one will ever be Layne, but it works, and when William sings Layne, it's great! So sit down, shut up, and give this band the respect and props they truly deserve, regardless who wrote what or who's penis is longer!

  • this song is a fucking masterpiece hell, the whole dirt album is a fucking masterpiece still cant believe nevermind is considered the best grunge album album of all time. ITS LUUUUUUUDACRISSS to me you know you agree

  • layne is my favorite grunge singer.

  • fuck all of you. alice in chains was and IS a great band. thier new material is exactly like something they woulda released in the nintees. and HEROINE is NOT what made them a good band. you should all kill yourself.

  • Layne and Jerry were both out of this world!! They complimented EACH OTHER! For the record, Layne did write a lot of the lyrics, there were just only a few in which he wrote the lyrics and music for the SAME song! Layne, we love you! Keep rockin till I can see you again!

  • I just can't get enough of this song even after 17 years....

  • I FUCKING LOVE YOU LAYNE! Rest In Peace

  • one who doesnt care is one who shouldnt be

  • I wish MIKE STARR never left the band.

  • mike inez

  • not mike starr, he left the band in jan. 93 after cobain and staley shot him up and he died for over 11 min.

  • is that mike starr

  • @whiteboydubs666 yea, hes the only one who played with his back to the crowd

  • @toobad890 he doesn't always have his back to the crowd. mike may be a messed up guy.. but he loves his fans, and he loved his bandmates. he just has troubles.

  • @ramonymony I didnt mean he did it disrespectfully, thats just his thing, he always does that, even when he plays now.

  • the bass line is killer

  • I want to taste dirty...a stinging pistol in my mouth on my tongue...I want you to scrap me...from the walls....and go crazy like you made me

  • Thank you very much for posting this Alerisa83! Layne on form with his beautiful vocals as always :)

  • if u love alice check out Ashes of Hope, try the songs Unlovable and The Agony Of Being Alive

  • i went to check u out but then realised ur him. i will listen anyhow.but dude lame.

  • Why does everyone make a big deal about who wrote the lyrics and shit. Well who SANG them. Nuff said.

  • @FangTehWolf who sang them with a shit loud of soul and conviytcion ?/ too??

  • @Jozsus Layne

  • @FangTehWolf good answer.,.. and it was up a drug hill tooo

  • @FangTehWolf Like someone said, Jerry wrote the music, Layne brought the pain.

  • @FangTehWolf Because it IS a big deal, obviously.

  • @FangTehWolf because the lyrics are important to some people, not to mention Layne's vocals cannot be matched

  • @comeonewtf Thats pretty much what I said.

  • @FangTehWolf Real fans know they wrote A lot of them together, but what have these idiots got to say about Mad Season ? Layne wrote all of those brilliant songs.

  • @FangTehWolf Well... it important to give the rest of the band credit as well, dude. It's a BAND, not a singer and just a bunch of losers.

  • It sucks I came to AiC once layne was gone, but I can see why everyone misses him so much. He had an amazing voice.

  • @gracii92 same happened with me

  • sean is such a talented drummer

  • Wow, thanks for uploading. Footages like this are priceless.

  • this might be my favorite aic song

  • heroin

  • this song is the reason i picked up a guitar

    alice in chains rock

  • I miss this band and this guy...

  • Jerry Cantrell wrote about 85% of every word ever uttered by Layne Staley thru Alice in Chains....if you don't believe that, just refer to any of the song credits on their cd's...songs people like to give Staley credit for like Nutshell, Would, Man In The Box. Dirt, and many, many more are penned by CANTRELL.

  • YOUR AN IDIOT !! jERRY ONLY WROTE WOULD OUT OF THE LIST YOU JUST GAVE DUMBASS!! GO DO SOME RESEARCH & QUIT BOPPING ON JERRY'S DICK

  • I don't know where you got your info from you stupid whore, but RESEARCH is where I got mine. You need to quit bopping on MY dick, you stinky-cooze Laynefan. READ SOME WIKI YOU CUNT

  • Ahh !! GO SHOVE Jerry's old smelley brute dick up your fuckin aids filled lice ass!! you need to research your facts straight, cuz we all know wiki is full of bullshit!! dumb cockpopper!!

  • That's what I thought....only an idiot would have taken my comment as if I was telling you to LITERALLY read Wiki for your info. I said that because if you think Layne wrote anywhere close to as much lyrics as Cantrell, then Wiki is probably where you got that little nugget of bullshit. You post like an inbred uncle-fucker with about a third grade education.

  • You know what I ain't even going 2 waste my time on your uneducated Bullshit.. Just know your Wrong & I'M 100% RIGHT,and if you were a true A.I.C fan you'd know Layne wrote half of their material. Toooooooooodles Jerry's Number 1 CockPopper!!

  • Wikipedia has the exact CD liner notes...which credit Layne Staley as the lyricist of Nutshell, Man in the Box, and Dirt. Perhaps you'd care to post a link to your "proof" that Jerry Cantrell wrote the lyrics to these songs?

  • @skillz16333 cool story bro, but youre wrong. the DIRT album does not say WHO wrote the lyrics or music it just lists the names of the band members who contributed. you cannot just assume that because laynes name is on a song he worte all the lyrics. thats retarded. they could have both worked on it together musically or lyrically either way jerry wrote downin a hole rooster them bones eavin beside you and many more that were all great songs..

  • @laynestaley1990 Discussing the title track "Dirt", Cantrell stated that "the words Layne put to it were so heavy, I've never given him something and not thought it was gonna be the most bad-assed thing I was going to hear." (Liner notes, Music Bank box set. 1999.) I think Jerry's a great lyricist, but there is no debate: Layne wrote the lyrics to Dirt. If Jerry says that's what happened, that's what happened.

  • @skillz16333 well jerry has stated in interviews that HE WAS THE PRIMARY SONGWRITER AND LYRICIST> so that means that he is right?

  • @laynestaley1990 I don't dispute that Jerry wrote the music to Dirt, because he did. But I just showed you a direct quote from Jerry that says Layne wrote the lyrics to the song. Feel free to show me any PROOF that refutes Jerry's statement. For example, do you have any links to the interviews where Jerry says he wrote the lyrics to Dirt?

  • @skillz16333 maybe not to dirt, i am just tired of people who say that layne was aic and that the other three members were basically nothing. jerrys a genius and he did a great job on the new alice cd. there arent many bands that could come back after 14 years with a new singer and release a cd as good as BGWTB. all im saying is that jerry wrote a fair amount of alices songs and has a VERY unique style as seen on songs such as down in a hole.and them bones.

  • @laynestaley1990 Hey man I agree Jerry is a genius. And I don't want to check, but I believe by Layne's death Jerry and Layne had each written about half of the total lyrics in the AIC catalog. Once again, I think Jerry is AS GOOD of a lyricist as Layne. But there's no point in denying Layne credit for the lyrics he wrote just to make Jerry look better. Jerry's a badass and looks good enough on his own. Long live AIC.

  • @skillz16333 my main concern is with wesson. he believes alice is a pile of shit without layne and that is stupid because there is no denying jerry is a genius. Hes another idiot that just assumes layne wrote all the songs because hes the singer. the song dirt was a bad example and i did not think about it but there are many songs where there is no indication as to who actually did the lyrics, it just has both thier names on it.

  • @laynestaley1990 So your calling me an idiot but yet your the one who is unaware of what it means when Jerry and Layne's names are both listed on the songs??

Any major Alice fan knows that, when it's listed like that it means Jerry wrote the music and Layne did the lyrics.

I'am aware of jerry's contributions obvisouly. But when you come on here and start talking about how Layne didn't write the lyrics for Dirt, you are obvisouly A biased cantrell fan and Layne basher.

  • @laynestaley1990 I dont believe Alice in a pile of shit without Layne. But People such as yourself who act like the band is still as good or if not better with Duvall piss me off.

And all i've every really argued is that Layne has contributed alot and he deserves credit. NO I dont come on here saying that Jerry deserves credit.. because he has just as many one sided biased morons such as yourself, thinking that he was the only reason AIC was a success.

  • @Wesson4 there again you put words in my comments that were not stated. can show me one comment where i stated that jerry is the only reason alice made it.....

  • @laynestaley1990 I'm just sick of people who try to bash layne and dont give him the credit he deserves.

    Its a two way street.

  • @Wesson4 no it isnt. i am giving them equal credit. you are only giving layne credit. jerry could have easily made it in a band without layne just as layne could have made it without jerry. that makes them equal. either way the band alice wouldnt be anywhere near as good as it is if either of them had never been in the band. its 50/ 50 nothing less nothing more. get over it.

  • @laynestaley1990

this guys a complete troll douchebag, he's been on these vids arugeing talking shit like he knows layne staley personally for a long time ignore his faggot ass, people like him ARE the reson layne was so reclusive .....dude ur a straight fucking tool with a screenname like "laynestaley" fucking dork

  • are you seriously retarded??? where anywhere did i act like i KNOW layne... if you actually READ the fucking comments youd see im actually talking about how important jerry is to the band... and at least my screen name stands for a musician who gets no credit.. at least my screen name MEANS anything at all... is "ofour" when you were born?

  • @Jeff2870 dude i agree with you.... but layne wrote the lyrics to man in the box and nutshell. it says (lyrics; Layne staley) right in the cd pamphlet. all you gotta do is read. i agree with you about jerry but your making yourself look like a dipshit.

  • Comment removed

  • Look you stupid nutless sac muthalovin cocksucking mutherfucker,if you would look on the song credits you would see layne wrotew half of the lyrics& sum jerry wrote a majority of the music but thats about it & sum of the lyrics.. so take your wiki mistruths & shove them up your loosey goosey cock riding asshole!! dickrider!!

  • Yeah but Layne also coached Jerry to actually SING MORE and gave Jerry the confidence he has now. JERRY HIMSELF says this. So yes, they needed each other.

  • this song gives me shivers. powerful performance....layne your tha man...its sad tho cause u can see death in this mans eyes. to the rest of the band your amazing as well...wat ever happen to mike starr?

  • I love Layne Staley but do not undermind the other guys ESPECIALLY Jerry Cantrell. Jerry wrote the vast majority of the lyrics with occasional input from the guys.

  • it was more equal than you think. And anyways Jerry isn't near the lyricist that Layne was.

As evident on the new Album. The great AIC lyrical content Layne provided just isn't there.

Overall Layne's contributions were huge. Despite what everybody likes to think.

  • @Wesson4 I agree, but part of that is because there is no heroin. The best stuff they wrote was the Dirt album, and they were all experimenting with H during that time.

  • @Wesson4 oh god... its you again... shut the hell up pleaaase i guess them bones rooster heaven beside you would? are all shitty lyrics.. just because a song has lanes name on it doesnt mean he wrote all the lyrics... in DIRT it doesnt say who specifically wrote the the lyrics or music. how do you know they didnt give eachother ideas on both the music and LYRICS. people like you ruin alice in chains by whining like a fucking street whore, enjoy that a band this good is still alive and stfu

  • @laynestaley1990 Get a grip man lol I dont even know how to respond to you your so pathetic.

I think Skillz16333 did a good enough job shutting your dumb ass down.

  • @Wesson4 you dont even have a defense your a worthless piece of shit who whines about a band whos clearly moved on to a new era get the fuck over it. alice wouldnt have been as good without jerry just like it wouldnt have been as good without layne. quit ruining a good band with your bitching.

  • @laynestaley1990 Your the one who comes on here swearing and getting upset like a 3 year old spoiled brat. All over the fact that some people on here give Layne the credit he deserves.

Yes Jerry wrote alot of lyrics. But like I said his lyrics for the majority are not as deep or as powerfull as what Layne would right. Down in a hole is the best song lyrically that Jerry wrote, Yes. but every song Layne wrote the lyrics to is god like.

  • @Wesson4 jerry wrote half of aic's lyrics and you know what they were damn good lyrics. your going to deny down in a hole the title of great lyrics. ???

    well then fuck you buddy

  • @laynestaley1990 There isn't one song on the new album btw, that lyrically is better than anything old Alice has done.

I'm just trying to raise awareness, because ignorant fan boys like yourself are constantly trying to put the new AIC on this holy pedastal but that fact is. Yes AIC may be making new music but those boys are walking in Layne's shadow and always will.

  • @Wesson4 go to wiki and read all the songs that were written by jerry. he is a mother fucking god. sure layne is a bad ass and sings about some deep shit, and sometimes shit, but jerry is a great singer/songwriter combo.

  • @megatonydeath on contrare man layne wrote alotta songs with jerry like most of the ones on Dirt

  • @TwiZtidPhsycho go to Dirt's wiki page.

read something. Sure I see layne's name a few times. But come one... jerry is the majority, says it right there and you can hear it in the music.

  • @megatonydeath i know man ima huge aic fan i dont care who wrote the songs they sound great

  • @megatonydeath fuck u read whatt? layne wrote way better songs,... nutshell, dirt, angry chair, hate to feel, rotten apple, man in the box, layne was the shit... his lyrics were unreal... way better than jerry's.

Cantrells is a sellout bitch whose solo, shit sucks, so he has to go back to the AIC name. to sell records.

    fuck him he betrayed layne.

  • @Wesson4 true that shit man...

  • @Wesson4 couldn't have said it better.

  • @soulismissing thank you brother happy new year

  • Jerry Cantrell wrote the vast majority of the lyrics.

  • Wow 0:20-0:36. Damn Layne

  • ....they were good with him but he would have been nothing without the rest of them

  • he would never be nothing! and even nothing to do with alice in chains

  • youre an idiot. according to wiki, staley wrote about half the lyrics, while the rest of the band were mostly responsible for the music. i'm sure the drummer and bassist never mind the guitarist are really worried about u leaving them out of the equation anyway fuckwit.

  • I agree! Lane's passionate and deep lyrics is what attracts people to AIC...those that can relate to his pain...those that feel his pain...Jerry could have carried on the AIC legacy with a different name..when Layne died...so did AIC.

  • So did AC/DC?

  • Finally...some support...Jerry should not continued to use the name AIC ...AIC died when Layne died...how could they dare let someone else sing Layne's songs...they were birthed by Layne

  • These guys were NOT birthed by Layne...Jerry not only wrote most of the material, but if you've seen their home video, you will see Jerry actually COACHING Layne on how to sing it! The current success of their new stuff is PROOF that Layne needed Jerry as much as Jerry needed Layne.

  • @Jeff2870 Yeah, they needed EACH OTHER! They BOTH woulda told you that! Ummmm so?? And Jerry did not write 85%! Thats you believing what you want. But who cares, they made masterpieces TOGETHER! Lets leave it at that and enjoy these works of art.

  • Lane was Alice , they're noting without him.

  • absolutely, that new singer is shit...

    im so disappointed

  • AIC will never be the same without Layne, but the new stuff is great. thank God Jerry didn't listen to the silly fucks who think Alice is nothing without Layne. He is dead, move on. The new album shows that Jerry was the genius and Layne was the edge. RIP Layne

  • AIC is not nothing without Layne, AIC is just not AIC without him.

  • disagree

  • the greatest...this takes me back to when i saw them in 92 at the troc in philly(peace to grunt truck, they opened up for aic)and in 93 when the headlined lallapallooza..rip layne

  • Fuck Duvall!! - " I want to taste dirty..a stinging pistol on my mouth, on my tounge".. You used your talent to make me feel like dirt"

  • I had the pleasure of seeing the band twice with Layne. It was an out of body experience. When he passed it felt like a family member died. Layne, u will always live on in our memory and our hearts. RIP!

  • Man Stardove...it's unreal to me that you got to see AIC with Layne. I'm ok with Duvall...but what I would have given for it to be with Layne. Much respect!

  • Another great performance by Layne and I think the same night he punched some jackass on stage

  • Layne was my favorite singer of all time, but the new album is awesome!

  • i love layne's hair and clothes and everything about him!

  • gyeman01

Grunge didn't have one particular sound, so you can't really categorize it by the music... If the band is from Seattle between the mid 1980's and the mid 1990's and there are nasty riffs, it's most likely grunge... Grunge also has a lot to do with the lyrics. :)

  • TheOnlyThinker...

If you just wanted to listen to the music, then ignore the comment section... If Youtube was only made for listening then there wouldn't be a comment section... I excuse you, but you are wrong. :) I don't like it when people bash the AIC, new or old, but they are allowed to if they want to...

  • Comment removed

  • haha you idiot, thats what youtube is for you fuck head lol

to vioce your thoughts on videos

and if you dont like it then why do you have a youtube account ??

amazing performance by the way, RIP LAYNE

  • i can understand ur problem with an aic that doesnt have layne, but i jsut saw them saturday and they were amazing. duvall fucking rocked

  • dude, i saw alice in chains last night. i love layne, definitely my favorite singer..but despite all the scrutiny duvall gets, he's a really fucking great front man.

  • jeanbean43,

    leave it my dear..

for the love of you and those around you...

  • who cares?

  • fag

  • p.s. i'm quite aware that AIC weren't really grunge, what i meant is the era they came from. good times, gooooood times.

  • AIC are grunge dickhead.

  • im a dickhead for knowing that grunge defined an era? last time i checked AIC were kinda metallish, pearl jam? ha! progressive, heavy rock. sound garden and nirvana were maybe grunge. you can't say that anything from the 90s was grunge. Beck = vaguely folkish alterna-rock. fuck you i asked nicely and made observations. all you had to do was call me on them, not toss me into a feeding pit full of people ready to take a bite out of any one that makes a mistake by them.

  • there's no excuse for making such a dumbarse comment, it's just the same as saying jesus is a muslim, everyone knows he's not. btw, beck sucks dick, who cares about them... soundgarden and nirvana... maybe grunge? how special lol... aic and pj are nothing like metal, go listen to your latest metallica album again, n00b.

  • i dont want to turn this into something. cool, you have an opinion. i am now choosing to disagree and educate you on what i said. i didn't say pj were metal, and o.k, AIC aren' metal, but it sounds like Mr. cantrell might have some musical roots in it. don't be a dick and try and get a rise out of me, it won't work. if you want i can say that you were right and i was completely wrong. im completely wrong. you were right. don't reply.

  • does it make you a wannabe or a poser if you sing like Layne? i just ask cause it is pretty damn fucking fun to try and sing like him. he hada great voice, eerie, ominous and heart-wrenching. im more asking for permission from the true AIC fans, my moral convictions tell me its pretty much stealing, but its so damn fun to recreate his voice. i would be using the same-ish sound for heavily influenced grunge music, not the crap u get these days.

  • Fucking excuse me.... you can't recreate Layne's voice

    Be fucking original.

  • hey fuck you i asked nicely. emoblowsass.....how original.

  • fuking drugs killinvg the better voices

  • suboxone....i was on it for 3/12 years. It was not to bad for me but long

  • no its not. not if you do it correctly

  • saboxone withdrawl is like 3 time the length of methadone , tho.

  • : I,,,,, want to taste dirty,,,,,,,,a stinging pistol,,,,,in my mouth ,on my tongue,,,,,I want you to scrape me,,,,,,,,from the waaaaaaalllllllllll."
