If you look...he's playing the ride wen it flicks to Geddy. A show of hands is heavily edited with clips from separate nights not just the one and some times random to the part there playing..which is why Alex's guitar keeps changing from black and white in overture and in turn the page, twice in the spirit of radio they show you a chorus clip before there on the chorus (a far away shot of Geddy clapping) also in turn the page there's a point were Geddy is shown playing bass when there is non!
@canyousmellicansmell Yeah, back then when they recorded live shows, they edited their footage extensively with "ghost clips" as I like to call them. Not sure exactly why they did this. They still do it today for some recordings, but it's much more subtle.
@ShowgunSam TBH I haven’t really noticed any since ASOH and it makes for better watching, have you noticed on grace under pressure the end of distant early warning is from a total different show? Ah well still Awesome!
@LOLKloklok Not only that....The jack hammer at the start and finish sounds different here than in the actual live album. I ought to know, I've drummed to this song many times thru the years. I never cared for the studio version. Anyway it's a kick ass tune.

I started to LOVE rush when i was only about 5 i am 14 now and i still love them and i never have any plans on changing that i dont listen to ANYTHING else. Geddy Lee is my version of God
That's Aimee Mann laughing @0:11. She went on to sing lead for Till Tuesday, a band which should never, ever have stopped playing great songs. I don't even see her in this video, tho.......?
One of the better songs on HYF (my favorite anyway) but Rupert Hine said it best when he asked, "Why is the last remaining power trios on the planet smothered in keyboards?"
@deckskater I dunno Rupert...you tell us. Show Don't Tell - Keyboards, Chain Lightning - Keyboards, The Pass - Keyboards, War Paint - Keyboards, Scars - Keyboards, Presto- Keyboards, Superconductor - Keyboards, Anagram - Keyboards, Red Tide - Keyboards, Hand Over Fist - Keyboards, Available Light - Keyboards, Dreamline - Keyboards, Bravado - Keyboards, Roll The Bones - Keyboards, Face Up - Keyboards, Where's My Thing? Keyboards, Big Wheel - Keyboards, Heresey - Keyboards, Ghost of a Chance
@deckskater Keyboards, Neurotica - Keyboards, You Bet Your Life - Keyboards. I found that line from him to be hysterical since every song he did with them had keyboards layered all over them lol. Everything he does has keyboards in their songs...The Fixx, Tina Turner, Stevie Nicks, Howard Jones, Saga, Thompson Twins, Suzanne Vega.
@PurdueRules15 Because they recently finished their two-year-straight Time Machine Tour and they had to take a break. Poor Geddy's voice was thrashed by the last leg of that tour (as with most who sing at the level he does). The recording is finished and final touches are being added to Clockwork Angels. Expect it to be out by spring.
One of the greatest opening songs of all time. This tour was just magical for me. Love Hold Your Fire and Rush! They absolutely have mastered their craft, they write brilliant songs, and Alex is still my fave guitar player ever.
total musicians. Terrific mastery of the instruments that relay their well written lyricism. Thanks tothe uploaders; I got to listen to them alot of times, but never seen them perform until youtube.
das war der erste Song meines ersten großen Live-Konzerts, 1985, Stuttgart, Schleyer-Halle. Ich war 14! Hat mich weggeblasen! Love it! Rush Forever!!!
Amazing synthscapes, symphonic guitars and rhythms... I love this era of Rush, they really took the next step with electronics, media, and experimenting with combining mulitple genres of music in a complex, yet accessible way. It's frustrating to see Geddy hidden behind the 80's rack of keyboards, but realistically, you have to acknowledge where he was as a musician and songwriter. He was the guy who wanted to do things that others couldn't do. It had to happen that way. Mad respect.
Incredibly groovy bassline! It still remains a mystery to me how he can sing like that simultaneously... I guess it's the result of having nothing else to do :-)
Thats not cool dude. The real thing is way worth buying. It's so cheap on the internet you would have to be a total asshole not to buy it. Unless of course you don't like this concert that much in the first place.
It IS, but I can't afford to purchase every single album Rush has with my own money, (I'm 15) so unless I want to sit on my computer for 30 hours, my only real option is to download them and listen to them at my leisure.
1 dollar a song is not cheap, it builds up. Every rush song = hundreds of dollars. and Rush is not the ONLY band I like you know.
I don't consider myself an asshole... I simply can't afford to buy all the stuff my favorite bands crank out.
A "double bass thump thump"??! That's freaking epic. Just so ya know, it's called a sequence and geddy triggers it with his foot via midi. Love the name though.
That's funny because I've heard Geddy say at one point they tried more heavy metal in the 70s. But for sure, All of their songs are progressive. Progressive rock is the greatest.
Hey this is something people confuse all the time. In the 70's, what RUSH played was considered heavy metal. (Like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, ETC.] Today metal is something different and we now place them under a different genre. But yeah, now you know :]

when hold your fire was being produced it only had 9 songsthat was written for the album, the SRO management went too the guys and said write another song.they only had a few days to come up with lyrics, and music hence the song title FORCE TEN quoted form Geddy, and Alex during an interview befor the album come out.
1987 was a good year, Hold Your Fire was released and I was born. While the bulk of the album is great, this song has always stood out as particularly brilliant.
Unfortunately this song is also brutal on bass. Alot of it is relatively simple, but nailing those chords in the main rhythm with the speed and consistency of Geddy is damn hard.
Hold your fire is a good album. You would think they would add it to the radio. But no! It's sad! All you hear is that stupid song "Love Story". Oh wow Taylor Swift! Bleh! And what about those classic rock stations. They add only 4 of Rush songs while they have a whole library of songs. It ticks me off.......
Loved this album. Amy Mann from 'Til Tuesday on vocal accompaniment...perfect match for Gedster's voice! The older fans really despised this album for some reason yet, the turnout for the tour was "sold out" almost every venue..go figure!
@jonny7789 Problem is, music is falling further and further away from the quality of Rush with each passing year - not closer. Give Rock another 100 years and it will just be melodic farting.
This is the best album opener they have ever done. Not Tom Sawyer, not Distant Early Warning, Test for Echo, Dreamline, Animate, Far Cry, One Little Victory, NONE of the other album openers can compare to the energy in this song.
Oh yeah. Silly me, you got me there! Yeah, I know what you mean, it's filled with so much power. Hold Your Fire is a really good album. As soon as you hear that bass line on Force Ten, you're thinking, "Wow, good as ever"
For those (including you) who apparently can't remember the album openers: Finding My Way, Anthem, Bastille Day, 2112, A Farewell to Kings, Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres, The Spirit of Radio, Tom Sawyer, Subdivisions, Distant Early Warning, The Big Money, Force Ten, Show Don't Tell, Dreamline, Animate, Test For Echo, One Little Victory and Far Cry.
If you don't like me thinking that Force Ten beats them all, too bad.
Yeah, um, when I was writing the comment I was listening to Xanadu at the time, so...
And who says that I haven't researched enough information on RUSH? I basically have all of their albums, then again, that doesn't exactly prove anything, but still, don't judge someone by a single comment.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
well your a fucking idiot then how the fuck was i supposed to know that?
...and you didnt prove anything at all you fuckin retard you said something and then contradicted your own self by saying oh well i have all the albums, but that doesnt prove anything either
so, therefore, i can in fact judge you on that single comment
...so are you done arguing with me yet? cause so far its like me 3 and you zip.
WOW!! pause at 4:11 u can see Geddys pedals. idk how he dose it, play the bass, the synth including the pedals and sing...if i were up ther id be like 0_0 wtf?!?!
It's really cool--at 1:13 when Geddy sings the line "attack the day like birds of prey" he seems to personify a bird of prey to me. =) Just a Random Observation.
Wickedest band ever!!!!!

Xanadu is not an album opener, but still: none of the openers (including those) campares to Force Ten in my mind.

Oh yeah. Silly me, you got me there! Yeah, I know what you mean, it's filled with so much power. Hold Your Fire is a really good album. As soon as you hear that bass line on Force Ten, you're thinking, "Wow, good as ever"
Catchfraser 3 years ago
no im thinking, geddy lee makes bass his lil' bitch
mexicanjewishmidget 3 years ago
umm yeah
La Villa Strangiato
or By-Tor and The Snow Dog
stoopid.
fuck even xanadu, marathon
freewill, subdivisions
maybe if you spent some time researching your bands.
mexicanjewishmidget 3 years ago
Album OPENERS you twat. As in track 1. Wow you really are a dumbass arent you?
ShinigamiXV 3 years ago 2
For those (including you) who apparently can't remember the album openers: Finding My Way, Anthem, Bastille Day, 2112, A Farewell to Kings, Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres, The Spirit of Radio, Tom Sawyer, Subdivisions, Distant Early Warning, The Big Money, Force Ten, Show Don't Tell, Dreamline, Animate, Test For Echo, One Little Victory and Far Cry.
If you don't like me thinking that Force Ten beats them all, too bad.
KaoKun1990 3 years ago
who in the bloody two fucks said we were talking about only, and specifically album openers ?
mexicanjewishmidget 3 years ago
Yeah, um, when I was writing the comment I was listening to Xanadu at the time, so...
And who says that I haven't researched enough information on RUSH? I basically have all of their albums, then again, that doesn't exactly prove anything, but still, don't judge someone by a single comment.
Catchfraser 3 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
well your a fucking idiot then how the fuck was i supposed to know that?
...and you didnt prove anything at all you fuckin retard you said something and then contradicted your own self by saying oh well i have all the albums, but that doesnt prove anything either
so, therefore, i can in fact judge you on that single comment
...so are you done arguing with me yet? cause so far its like me 3 and you zip.
mexicanjewishmidget 3 years ago
...okay, sorry. Lets just watch the video now.

My favourite Rush song. Brilliant, just brilliant.
I've gotta say though, my love for this song has increased because of Geddy's hair in this. Is that a legendary mullet or what?
Trookieness 3 years ago 5
Not really a mullet...he just had it put in a ponytail, is all

I love Hold Your Fire and was happy to see them play Red Sector A in late 2007 at the ACC in Toronto.
I love how Geddy hits the high notes by raising his eyebrows!
ooookokok 3 years ago 13
Haha, Geddy's eyebrows are awesome.

Geddy is generally quite awesome

yea lol
sykochikn136 3 years ago 9
It's really cool--at 1:13 when Geddy sings the line "attack the day like birds of prey" he seems to personify a bird of prey to me. =) Just a Random Observation.

so awsome, rush is unmatched musically by any force on this earth...no question

Ah, the 80's! At the time I thought it was hell, but now I realize it was a heavenly decade... for me anyway! I was young! ;)
