As has been stated before the 'Jeely Piece song' was written by Adam McNaughton - another of his classics is 'Where is the Glasgow that ah used tae know'. Big Adam was my English Teacher at Rutherglen Academy in1968-69. The Rutherglen Academy Ballads Club was quite something then -the late Norman Buchan had a hand in it too, I think. Last saw Adam in his wee book shop in Parnie Street but thats a load a years ago now
Could someone post the words? I'd love to host a caelie (unsure of the Gaelic spelling) for my mum's side , but I can't hear all of the words. I'm hungry now though :)
I remeber doing this as part of a scottish celebration at primary school celebration years ago! ha and then everyone was dancing to "500 miles" hahaha oh how I miss those times!
hen i lived on Dunigoil terrace in the 1970 s went to windlaw school ? god i remember the same thing had a great wee greet .. what year were you on Castlemilk Drive ?
Classic. I'm doing housing in Scotland in history the now and we've been told to learn this song, it's brill, used to sing it in my primary, good old days, back when you had no idea what a piece was lol. Love it <33
What a cracker of a song ! Three cheers for Adam McNaughton. I know he used to teach at my old secondary school, Grange Secondary in Castlemilk and I have a theory that he used to look out on to the Mitchel Hill flats from his classroom and that's where he got the inspiration. Does anybody know if that's true ? A true classic.
Does anybody remember singing this at primary school 40 years ago if memory serves me It was on the big wireless in the classroom where you sang along to it reading from a wee leaflet.
40 odd weans singing like linties nae wonder the teacher took a swally at the weekend.
god bless thistle street! god bless marys Dairy! long live the gorbals happiest days of my life,St lukes ballater street and a penny bag a coconut oot the bakers wi the mustard painted shop front!
Don't think so, I remember in the 60s on TV there was a group called "The Islanders" The lead singer looked like Brian Blessed & his wife was a blonde on double base. They used to sing it quite often. I have another version but its not as good as this.
